CFW Week 13 Forecast – Coaching carousel heating up
Getting down to the nitty-gritty
As we come down to the final two weeks of the regular college football season, there are some wild races going on in the conferences. Races for a spot in the championship game. And beyond that, a spot in the College Football Playoff – either as the conference champion or as an at-large team.
The wildest of the races seem to be going on in the Big 12 and ACC, where five or more teams are still in contention. There are six teams still in the running in the Big 12, which plays a nine-game conference schedule. The two favorites are Texas Tech (7-1) and BYU (6-1). If the Red Raiders and the Cougars make the title game, it would be a rematch. Two weeks ago, Texas Tech beat BYU, 29-7. Other teams still in the running in the Big 12 are Utah (5-2), Houston (5-2), Arizona State (5-2) and Cincinnati (5-2).
In the ACC, where they play an eight-game conference schedule, five teams are in contention for the title game. The two favorites are Georgia Tech (6-1) and Virginia (6-1). The Yellow Jackets and the Cavaliers did not play each other during the season. The other challengers in the ACC are Pitt (5-1), SMU (5-1) and Miami (4-2). Pitt has the toughest finish. The Panthers play Georgia Tech this week and Miami next week.
There are four teams still in the running for the SEC championship game. The SEC plays an eight-game conference schedule. The four teams in contention are Texas A&M (7-0), Alabama (6-1), Georgia (7-1) and Ole Miss (6-1). Georgia has completed its conference slate. The pairing for the SEC title game will not be decided until the final weekend (November 28-29) of the regular season. If Texas A&M beats Texas on November 29, the Aggies, at 8-0, are in the championship game. Alabama ends its season against Auburn and Ole Miss finishes up against Mississippi State. If Alabama and Ole Miss both win, there will be a three-way tie for the second spot in the title game. If that happens, the deciding factor between the three teams would be based on strength of schedule. That means the results of Tennessee vs. Florida, Vanderbilt vs. Kentucky and Arkansas vs. Missouri would determine who owns the strength of schedule edge for the final spot.
It gets even crazier, as the possibilities are vast. Here it is spelled out.
Alabama reaches the SEC championship if:
1. Alabama beats Auburn and Texas beats Texas A&M, or
2. Alabama beats Auburn and Mississippi State beats Ole Miss, or
3. Alabama beats Auburn and there is a three-way tie between Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss. Alabama gets in based on SEC opponent winning percentage
Georgia reaches the SEC championship if:
1. Auburn beats Alabama, or
2. Texas beats Texas A&M, or
3. Ole Miss beats Mississippi State, then Georgia wins the three-way tie based on SEC opponent winning percentage
Ole Miss reaches the SEC championship if:
1. Ole Miss beats Mississippi State, Texas beats Texas A&M and Auburn beats Alabama
During the regular season, Texas A&M did not play Alabama, Georgia or Ole Miss. Georgia played Alabama and Ole Miss, losing to Alabama and beating Ole Miss. Alabama and Ole Miss did not play each other during the season.
Of the four Power Four conferences, the race to play in the title game is almost settled in the Big Ten. At least, it is assumed to be. Indiana vs. Ohio State. However, there could be some trouble on the horizon. The Big Ten plays a nine-game conference slate. Five teams are in contention. Indiana (8-0), Ohio State (7-0), USC (6-1), Oregon (6-1) and Michigan (6-1). Indiana and Ohio State are the clear favorites, because of their remaining opponents. Indiana plays Purdue who has not won a Big Ten game this season. Of Ohio State’s two remaining games, one is a sure win – Rutgers (2-5). The second game will be a challenge – Michigan in Ann Arbor on November 29. USC and Oregon meet this weekend. The loser will be knocked out. If Oregon wins, the Ducks still have a tough game against Washington in Seattle on November 29.
If tiebreaker rules have to be applied to determine the Big Ten pairings, then head-to-head competition is the No. 1 factor. As mentioned, Ohio State and Michigan meet on November 29 and USC and Oregon meet this weekend. During the season, Indiana beat Oregon and USC beat Michigan.
The second factor is winning percentage against common opponents within the conference. The third factor is winning percentage against common opponents based on their order of finish in the conference. The fourth factor is the combined record of all conference opponents for each team. The fifth factor is each team’s ranking by SportsSourceAnalytics, a company that specializes in college football data and analytics.
The solutions to all the scenarios are pretty obvious, unless it comes down to a tiebreaker for the second spot between Oregon and Michigan. That one could be a sticky wicket.
That brings us to this week’s Top-10 games. Eight of the 10 have implications on the potential participants in the conference championship games and the CFP. There is one Big Ten game and it’s a biggie – USC (8-2) at Oregon (9-1). Both offenses are strong, but Oregon’s defense should control the game.
There are two SEC encounters, led by Missouri (7-3) at Oklahoma (8-2). The Tigers hope to catch the Sooners still hung over from last week’s win over Alabama. The other SEC affair is Kentucky (5-5) at Vanderbilt (8-2). The Commodores better have respect for the Wildcats.
The ACC has two intriguing contests, headlined by Pitt (7-3) at Georgia Tech (9-1). Tech has the upper hand with Haynes King. Also, in the SEC, is Louisville (7-3) at SMU (7-3). The Mustangs are 5-1 in their last six games. Louisville is 0-2 in its last two games.
Lo and behold, the Big 12 has five games among this week’s Top-10 encounters. First up is BYU (9-1) at Cincinnati (7-3). BYU is a hot team. Cincinnati tripped up last week. Next in the Big 12 we have Kansas State (5-5) at Utah (8-2).Utah has won its last three games. But the Utes can’t take Kansas State for granted.
How about Baylor (5-5) at Arizona (7-3). Baylor has the leading passer in the country in Sawyer Robertson. He has passed for 3,210 yards and 29 touchdowns. Arizona has the better overall team. Then the Big 12 offers up Kansas (5-5) at Iowa State (6-4). Iowa State ended its 4-game losing streak last week. Kansas wants to become bowl eligible. Lastly, in the Big 12, is TCU (6-4) at Houston (8-2). Houston still has a shot at the Big 12 title game. TCU hopes to deflect that shot.
I am also curious about the outcome of two other games this weekend. Minnesota (6-4) at Northwestern (5-5) should be an interesting affair. Minnesota is already bowl eligible. Northwestern needs one more win to get a bowl spot. Both teams have shown signs of strength this season. Both have shown signs of weakness….Also, Washington State (5-5) at James Madison (9-1). Interesting situation at James Madison. The Dukes stand a good chance of becoming the highest-ranked Group of Five team in the CFP. At the same time, JMU coach Bob Chesney is reported to be a strong candidate for the head coaching jobs at Penn State and UCLA.
Saturday, California (6-4) plays at Stanford (3-7) in “The Big Game.” This will be the 119th meeting between Cal and Stanford. Stanford leads the series 60-48-10. Cal won last year, 24-21.
The Ivy League concludes its season this weekend. Harvard (9-0) plays at Yale (7-2) in “The Game.” Dartmouth (7-2) visits Brown (4-5). Columbia (1-8) is at Cornell (4-5), and Princeton (3-6) travels to Penn (5-4).
The winner of the Harvard-Yale game wins the Ivy League championship. Yale won last year, 34-29. This will be the 141st meeting between the two schools. Yale leads the series 71-61-8. This year, for the first time in history, the Ivy League champion will compete in the postseason FCS playoff.
After several weeks of peace and calm, the coaching carousel has heated up during the past few days. Virginia Tech announced the hiring of fired Penn State coach James Franklin. At Tech, Franklin is replacing Brent Pry, who was fired several weeks ago. Interestingly, Pry was Franklin’s defensive coordinator at Penn State when Virginia Tech hired him in 2022.
Reportedly, Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin has offers from Florida and LSU. Apparently, he is trying to decide which one to accept or stay at Ole Miss. Sources said his family visited Gainesville on Sunday and Baton Rouge on Monday. Reports also say that Ole Miss has given Kiffin an ultimatum to make his decision prior to the Ole Miss-Mississippi State game on November 28. Kiffin claims the ultimatum report isn’t true. Sounds like Kiffin is playing the three schools against each other in an attempt to get the best deal.
Michigan State, reportedly, has made a decision to fire second-year coach Jonathan Smith. In one-plus seasons with the Spartans, Smith is 8-14 – 0-7 in Big Ten play this year. And get this – Smith’s replacement at Michigan State could be fired LSU coach Brian Kelly. That’s what the reports say. Stay tuned!
If Smith is fired, he would be the 14th coach fired this year.
In another interesting situation, James Madison coach Bob Chesney is reported to be a candidate for the head coaching jobs at both Penn State and UCLA. James Madison is 9-1 this season and 18-5 over the two seasons Chesney has been there.
College football Week 13 began Tuesday with a MACtion-packed night of three games. Akron and Bowling Green gave us a game full of field goals – seven in all. Ultimately, Akron outkicked Bowling Green, 19-16. There were also five turnovers in the game.
Western Michigan got off to a slow start – down 10-0 as the second quarter began. But the Broncos got it going in the second quarter and went on to beat Northern Illinois, 35-19. Three WMU players each rushed for 100 or more yards. WMU only had 32 yards passing, but 361 yards rushing. NIU only had 78 yards passing. It was definitely a ground game.
In the third game of the night, Ohio clobbered Massachusetts, 42-14. Ohio running back Sieh Bangura ran for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Ohio only had 28 yards passing, but 363 yards rushing.
MACtion continued on Wednesday night with two games. Central Michigan downed Kent State, 28-16. With 3 minutes left in the game, CMU led 28-9. In the other game, Miami (Ohio) beat Buffalo, 37-20. Buffalo suffered from three turnovers.
Based on this week’s CFP rankings, the 12 teams in the playoff would be 1. Ohio State (10-0), 2. Indiana (11-0), 3. Texas A&M (10-0), 4. Georgia (9-1), 5. Texas Tech (10-1), 6. Ole Miss (10-1), 7. Oregon (9-1), 8. Oklahoma (8-2), 9. Notre Dame (8-2), 10. Alabama (8-2), 11. Miami (8-2), and 12. Tulane (8-2). BYU (9-1) and Utah (8-2) finished 11th and 12th in the rankings, respectively. However, as things currently stand, the Cougars and the Utes would be replaced in the playoff by 13th Miami (highest-ranked ACC team) and 24th Tulane (highest-ranked Group of Five team).
The Top-5 teams in this week’s FCS Coaches Poll are 1. North Dakota State (11-0), 2. Montana (11-0), 3. Montana State (9-2), 4. Lehigh (11-0), and 5. Tarleton State (10-1). Harvard (9-0) is 10th, Lafayette (8-3) is 24th and Yale (7-2) is 25th. Lehigh, Harvard, Lafayette and Yale are the only non-athletic scholarship FCS teams in the rankings.
West Florida (9-1) is 9th in this week’s Division II Coaches Poll.
Yes, we are getting down to the nitty-gritty. Maybe the Dirt Band will perform at halftime.

Touchdown Tom’s Predictions for
Week Thirteen’s 10 Biggest and Most Intriguing Games….and then some
GAME OF THE WEEK: 1. #15 USC (8-2) at #7 Oregon (9-1) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS – This is a crucial game as both of these teams are still in the running for the Big Ten championship game. Likewise, both are still in the running for the CFP. But only the winner will remain in contention. Although, Oregon will still have a shot of making the CFP if the Ducks lose to USC. USC is led by quarterback Jayden Maiava who has passed for 2,868 yards. USC is 10th in the country in passing yards per game. The Trojans have a strong running back in King Miller. Oregon is led by quarterback Dante Moore who has passed for 2,190 yards. The Ducks have a strong running game. Oregon is 8th in the country in rushing yards per game. Both teams average around 38-39 points a game on offense. Oregon has the better defense. USC enters on a three-game winning streak. Oregon is riding a four-game winning streak. This has the potential to be a wild one. Let’s hear it for the Waddlers – Oregon 30, USC 27.
RUNNER-UP: 2. #22 Missouri (7-3) at #8 Oklahoma (8-2) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ABC – This game is more crucial for Oklahoma. But it is important to Missouri. Oklahoma has a shot at making the CFP. Missouri most likely doesn’t. If OU finishes the season at 10-2, the Sooners are definitely in the CFP. If Mizzou finishes the season at 9-3, the Tigers have a slim chance of making the CFP. Missouri’s offense is all about running back Ahmad Hardy. He’s a Heisman Trophy contender. Hardy has rushed for 1,346 yards. Last week, he ran for 300 yards against Mississippi State. The Tigers are 6th in the country in rushing yards per game. Mizzou’s quarterback situation is questionable due to injuries. Oklahoma is led by quarterback John Mateer. He has passed for 2,087 yards. OU has a good passing game, but a poor running game. Missouri has the stronger offense. OU has the stronger defense. Mizzou could catch Oklahoma still celebrating its win over Alabama. The Sooners can’t hold that Tiger – Missouri 26, Oklahoma 25.
REST OF THE BEST: 3. #11 BYU (9-1) at Cincinnati (7-3) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 8 pm ET, Saturday, FOX – This game is important for both teams. Cincinnati still has a shot at the Big 12 conference championship game. BYU not only can make the Big 12 title game, but also the Cougars are in excellent position to make the CFP. BYU should have more incentive to win. The Cougars are led by quarterback Bear Bachmeier. He’s feisty. Bachmeier has passed for 2,177 yards. BYU also has a good running back in L.J. Martin . He has rushed for 912 yards. At quarterback, Cincinnati counters with Brendan Sorsby. He has passed for 2,218 yards. Sorsby had a bad game last week against Arizona. He’s due to bounce back. Both teams are averaging 34 points a game. BYU is better on defense. The Bearcats come into the game on a two-game losing streak. The Cougar cats are better than the Bearcats – BYU 28, Cincinnati 26.
4. Pitt (7-3) at #16 Georgia Tech (9-1) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 7 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – Both teams have a shot at the ACC title game. Georgia Tech has a good shot at the CFP. Pitt had a bad loss to Notre Dame last week. Tech nearly lost to Boston College. The week before, the Jackets lost to NC State. Tech has been in a funk. Pitt switched quarterbacks several weeks ago. The Panthers now go with Mason Heintschel at QB. He has passed for 1,673. Pitt has no running game. Georgia Tech is all about Haynes King. As King goes, so goes the Yellow Jackets. He has passed for 2,259 yards and rushed for 807 yards. Tech is 10th in the country in rushing yards per game. Panthers can’t swat the Yellow Jackets – Georgia Tech 31, Pitt 30.
5. Louisville (7-3) at SMU (7-3) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – SMU has a chance to make the ACC title game. Louisville doesn’t have a chance for anything. Well yes, a better bowl game. But that’s all. Louisville quarterback Miller Moss has passed for 2,344 yards. The Cardinals have lost their last two games – last week to Clemson. SMU was off last week. That could help the Mustangs. SMU is led by quarterback Kevin Jennings. He has passed for 2,810 yards. Both teams are similar on offense and defense. Both are averaging 32 points a game on offense. Both are holding opponents to 21 points a game. The Mustangs turn the Red Birds blue – SMU 27, Louisville 24.
6. Kentucky (5-5) at #14 Vanderbilt (8-2) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – No conference championship implications here. But Vanderbilt does have a shot at making the CFP. The Commodores will have to win out. Kentucky comes in on a three-game winning streak. The Wildcats need one more win to become bowl eligible. But Kentucky has been playing outstanding football in recent games. Vandy is all about quarterback Diego Pavia. He has passed for 2,440 yards and rushed for 613 yards. As Pavia goes, so goes the Commodores. Vandy is the much better team on offense. Both teams are similar on defense, giving up 22-23 points a game. Vandy kicks the Wildcats down Broadway – Vanderbilt 30, Kentucky 24.
7. Kansas State (5-5) at #12 Utah (8-2) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Kansas State is the spoiler. Utah has its sights on the Big 12 title game and a spot in the CFP. K-State has been a disappointing team this season. They were supposed to be a much better team than they have been. Quarterback Avery Johnson has passed for 2,168 yards. Utah comes in on a three-game winning streak. The Utes are a dual threat at quarterback. Not one quarterback, but two – Devon Dampier and Byrd Ficklin. Dampier can run and pass. Ficklin can run. The Utes offense has become scary to opposing defenses. K-State’s troubles continue – Utah 34, Kansas State 20.
8. Baylor (5-5) at Arizona (7-3) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 1 pm ET, Saturday, TNT – No conference championship or CFP possibilities here. But Arizona has been playing outstanding football the past few weeks. The Wildcats have a three-game winning streak going. Baylor has been a disappointing team this season. Much more was expected of the Bears. Quarterback Sawyer Robertson has been good, passing for 3,210 yards. He’s averaging 324 yards a game which is 2nd-best in the nation. Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita isn’t bad either. He has passed for 2,494 yards. Both teams are averaging 33 points a game. Arizona is much better on defense. Bears get skinned – Arizona 33, Baylor 27.
9. Kansas (5-5) at Iowa State (6-4) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FS1 – Neither of these teams will be playing for a conference championship game or a spot in the CFP. Kansas is still playing to become bowl eligible. Iowa State is already bowl eligible. Kansas has been up-and-down all season. Good one week, not so good the next. Quarterback Jalon Daniels has passed for 2,190 yards. Seems like he has been around forever. Iowa State is led by quarterback Rocco Becht. He has passed for 2,230 yards. Becht hasn’t performed up to expectations this season. Iowa State was a hot team at the beginning of the season. The Cyclones were 5-0. Then they lost four-straight games. Both teams are averaging about 28-29 points a game. Both are holding their opponents to 23-24 points a game. Cy can’t handle the Jayhawk – Kansas 27, Iowa State 23.
10. TCU (6-4) at #23 Houston (8-2) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, FOX – TCU is playing for pride. Houston still has a shot of playing in the Big 12 championship game. TCU is led by quarterback Josh Hoover. He has passed for 2,873 yards. Hoover had a bad game last week. TCU has no running game. So, if the passing isn’t working, the Horned Frogs aren’t winning. Houston goes with quarterback Connor Weighman. He has passed for 2,113 yards. Both teams are averaging 30-31 points a game. Houston is a little better on defense. Cougars feast on Frog legs – Houston 28, TCU 27.
YE OLDE STOMPING GROUNDS:
#20 Tennessee (7-3) at Florida (3-7) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Tennessee has a sliver of a chance of making the CFP. Meanwhile, Florida is at the opposite end of the stick. The Gators are trying to make the best of a bad situation. It will take their best and that might not do it. Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar has passed for 2,941 yards. The Vols are averaging 318 passing yards a game – 3rd in the nation. Florida quarterback D.J. Lagway has been a big disappointment this season. Often he has been the MVP for Florida’s opponents this season. Maybe he just needs glasses. Florida is on a three-game losing streak. Tennessee is averaging 43 points a game. Florida is averaging 21. Both teams are giving up about 26-27 points on defense. The best part of Florida’s offense is running back Jordan Baugh. He has rushed for 808 yards. Vols drain The Swamp – Tennessee 33, Florida 24.
Nebraska (7-3) at Penn State (4-6) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 7 pm ET, Saturday, NBC – For the most part, Nebraska has had a pretty good season. With two more wins, it would be a great season. Penn State is out to salvage what it can. With quarterback Dylan Raiola out with an injury, the best part of Nebraska’s offense may be running back Emmett Johnson. Johnson has rushed for 1,131 yards. Likewise with Penn State. With Drew Allar out with an injury, the best part of the Nittany Lions offense may be running back Kaytron Allen. Allen has rushed for 917 yards. Penn State is 114th in the country in passing yards per game – averaging just 179 yards. Both teams average about 31-32 points a game on offense. Both hold opponents to 20-21 points a game on defense. Herbie’s happy in Happy Valley – Nebraska 28, Penn State 25.
Duke (5-5) at North Carolina (4-6) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ACCN – Bill Belichick will be doing his best to make a bowl game. He needs two more wins. Duke is out to do the same thing. The Dookies just need one more win. Duke quarterback Darian Mensah has passed for 3,007 yards. The problem for the Dookies is they have no running game. They are averaging 130 rushing yards a game – 100th in the country. The Tar Heels have about the worst offense in the country – 180 passing yards per game and 109 rushing yards. UNC is 113th in the country in passing yards and 122nd in rushing yards. The Tar Heels only average 19 points a game. The Dookies give Belichick a Devil of a time – Duke 28, North Carolina 24.
Charlotte (1-9) at #4 Georgia (9-1) – (AC vs. SEC) – 12:45 pm ET, Saturday, SECN – Georgia can rest its players this week. They can play the third string Dawgs – third string majorettes and cheerleaders. Charlotte enters on a 7-game losing streak. The 49ers are 130th in the country in rushing yards – 95 per game. Georgia, on the other hand, is on a 6-game winning streak. Quarterback Gunner Stockton has passed for 2,269 yards. He has gotten better and better each game this season. Uga can make the score anything he wants it to be. Uga is charitable – Georgia 38, Charlotte 14.
Arkansas (2-8) at #17 Texas (7-3) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Texas is lucky to be playing Arkansas this week. The Longhorns may still be in a funk from last week’s loss to Georgia. A reasonably tough opponent could be dangerous. But Arkansas has lost 8-straight games. The Razorbacks have yet to win a game in SEC play. Oddly enough, Arkansas is averaging 470 yards per game on offense. Quarterback Taylen Green has passed for 2,537 yards. Texas just needs to get Georgia out of its system and play a sound game. After all, the Aggies are coming to town next week. Quarterback Arch Manning has passed for 2,374 yards. Should Texas win out, the Longhorns can make the CFP. A win over Texas A&M would go a long way. Bevo grazes on Pork – Texas 30, Arkansas 18.

Quotes of the Week
“There’s a chance Lane Kiffin is pulling off the greatest coaching troll job in the history of sports,” ESPN’s Matt Barrie.
“I love it here. We are in the greatest run that this school has ever had. It’s amazing. I’m living the moment. The players are too. It’s awesome to be part of it,” Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, on leaving Ole Miss for Florida or LSU.
“I think he’s going to Florida. I really do. I think he’s going to Florida, and I think he’s going to be the next coach of the Gators,” FOX Sports Joel Klatt, on Lane Kiffin.
“So, he’s trying to decide between LSU and Florida, and Florida seems like a slightly better choice. I think it’s Florida. He’s always been a Florida fan. He grew up idolizing Steve Spurrier,” ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, on where Lane Kiffin ends up.
“I do know next year at this time, we’re going to be sitting here on this Tuesday night, watching the playoff rankings to see where we are,” South Carolina coach Shane Beamer, begging to keep his job.
