College Football Week 5 - Georgia Tech fires Geoff Collins

College Football Week 5 – Georgia Tech fires Geoff Collins

Ohio State rolls, Oklahoma falls;

Clemson and USC survive

And Kansas is still undefeated.

After four weeks of football, 21 teams are still undefeated. One of them is Ohio State. The Buckeyes continue to roll. Saturday, Ohio State rolled to a 45-7 third quarter lead over Wisconsin, going on to beat the Badgers, 52-21.

Along the way, the Buckeyes racked up 539 total yards, while holding Wisconsin to 296 total yards. Quarterback C.J. Stroud enhanced his Heisman Trophy potential, passing for 281 yards and five touchdowns. After four contests this season, Ohio State is averaging 49 points (3rd in the country) and 559 total yards (2nd in the country) a game. Meanwhile, other undefeated teams, such as Alabama, Penn State, Tennessee, Minnesota, Washington and NC State, kept rolling too.

However, for some other teams, the rolling stopped on Saturday. One of those teams was Oklahoma, who lost for the first time. The Sooners fell to Kansas State, 41-34. Oklahoma put up numbers that would normally give them a win – 550 total yards, 330 passing yards, scoring in every quarter. Those numbers weren’t good enough Saturday. Especially when Kansas State had 509 total yards, 28 first downs and controlled the ball for 9 more minutes than the Sooners. Meanwhile, other teams, such as North Carolina, Iowa State, Indiana, Arkansas and Maryland, suffered their first loss on Saturday.

Then there were the undefeated teams who barely survived, barely escaped to remain undefeated. Clemson was taken to two overtimes by Wake Forest, before the Tigers pulled out a 51-45 (2OT) win. With less than 5 minutes left in regulation, The Demon Deacons held a 3-point lead over Clemson – 38-35. With 4:01 on the clock, the Tigers evened the score on a 52-yard field goal by B.T. Potter. After one overtime, Clemson was still living on the edge – 45-45. After two overtimes, the Tigers were finally purring.

Out West, another team barely survived, barely escaped to remain undefeated. USC was taken to the final 73 seconds of its game with Oregon State, before the Trojans could pull out a 17-14 win over the Beavers. With less than 2 minutes left in the final quarter, USC trailed Oregon State, 14-10. Then, with 1:13 left on the clock, the Trojans Jordan Addison scored on a 21-yard pass from Caleb Williams. USC went up 17-14 and held on to win. Meanwhile, two other teams – Syracuse and James Madison – barely survived to remain undefeated.

And yes, Kansas is still undefeated. The Jayhawks are 4-0. And we’re talking football, not basketball. Saturday, Kansas beat previously unbeaten Duke, 35-27. The Jayhawks never trailed in the game. This is the Kansas that only won a total of nine games in the past five seasons.

College football Week 4 began Thursday night in Blacksburg, Virginia. That’s where West Virginia poured sand down the Hokies. WVU beat Virginia Tech, 33-10, holding the Hokies to just 35 yards rushing. South of Blacksburg, Coastal Carolina improved to 4-0. The Chanticleers racked up 540 total yards, beating Georgia State, 41-24.

In the nightcap Thursday, Illinois skunked Chattanooga, 31-0. The Banned Indians had 502 yards of offense.

The action continued Friday night with three more games. In the opener, Andre Szmyt kicked a 31-yard field goal with 1:14 remaining in the game to give Syracuse a 22-20 win over Virginia. The Orange are 4-0. In the second contest, Air Force didn’t fly, but instead rolled over Nevada, 48-20. The Falcons had 541 yards on offense – 461 of those rushing.

Friday night ended with UTEP downing Boise State, 27-10. The Miners held the Bulldogs to less than 100 yards passing (93) and less than 100 yards rushing (84), while controlling time of possession for 40:35.

Nothing like dropping the ball on the 1 as you are about to score the winning touchdown. That’s what Missouri’s Nathaniel Peat did on Saturday. The Mizzou running back was about to step into the end zone to give Missouri a 20-14 (OT) win over Auburn. But Peat forgot to take the football into the end zone with him. He dropped it on the one. Auburn recovered it in the end zone. Instead of beating Auburn 20-14 (OT), Missouri lost to Auburn 17-14 (OT).

How about the Fordham-Ohio game? It was a bit reminiscent of the North Carolina-Appalachian State game on opening weekend. North Carolina won that game 63-61 in a wild finish. Saturday, Ohio beat Fordham 59-52 in a wild game, with a wild finish. Trailing the Rams, 52-46, the Bobcats scored two touchdowns in the final 53 seconds of the game to pull out the 59-52 win. Ohio and Fordham combined for 1,332 total yards. North Carolina and App State combined for 1,216 yards in their game.

And speaking of North Carolina, the Tar Heels suffered their first loss. Notre Dame beat North Carolina, 45-32. After an 0-2 start, the Irish are now 2-2. Notre Dame racked up 576 total yards in the game.

And speaking of Appalachian State, the Mountaineers had another wild game. After jumping out to a 28-3 second-quarter lead over James Madison, App State ended up losing the game, 32-28. The Dukes scored 28 unanswered points to pull out the win. All four of App State’s games this season have been settled by 4 points or less – a total of 13 points.

During the week, last week, Miami (Florida) quarterback Tyler Van Dyke ripped the Canes fans for a lack of atmosphere at Miami’s home games. Obviously, there was a lack of atmosphere Saturday. Middle Tennessee beat Miami, 45-31. Van Dyke was benched in the third quarter for a poor performance.

Cincinnati handed Indiana its first loss. The Bearcats downed the Hoosiers, 45-24. Cincinnati quarterback Ben Bryant passed for 354 yards. TCU improved to 3-0, beating rival SMU in a good game, 42-34. TCU running back Kendre Miller rushed for 142 yards.

UCF looked awful, beating Georgia Tech, 27-10. UCF quarterback John Rhys Plumlee only had 49 yards passing. On the bright side, Plumlee had 100 yards rushing. California looked good, beating Arizona, 49-31. Cal had 602 total yards and Bears running back Jaydn Ott rushed for 274 yards.

Navy won its first game of the season. The Middies beat East Carolina, 23-20 (2OT).

Meanwhile, Iowa still likes 7 in its point total. In their first two games, the Hawkeyes scored 7 points in both contests. In their last two games, The Hawkeyes have scored 27 points in both contests. Saturday, Iowa beat Rutgers, 27-10.

Talk about a Rocky Mountain low, football is not exactly experiencing a stellar season in Colorado. The state’s two FBS teams – Colorado and Colorado State – are a combined 0-8. In four games, the Buffaloes have been outscored, 173-17. In four games, the Rams have been outscored, 164-43.

And finally, the rally, and perhaps the wildest finish, of the day occurred in Pullman. Washington. With less than 4 minutes to go in the game, Oregon trailed Washington State, 34-22. The Ducks proceeded to score three touchdowns in 2 minutes and 49 seconds, to rally and beat the Cougars, 44-41. With 3:50 to go, Oregon scored on a 1-yard pass. Then with 1:29 to go, the Ducks scored on a 50-yard pass. And finally, with 1:01 on the clock, Oregon scored on a pick-six. The Oregon comeback was led by former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix. To add to the excitement, Washington State added a final touchdown as time expired.

Miami (Florida) quarterback Tyler Van Dyke came out last week and ripped his school for the lack of an atmosphere at home games. Van Dyke said, “Miami has no atmosphere at its home games.” As a result, he said he prefers playing on the road over playing at home. Van Dyke said most Miami students don’t bother to attend the games.

Maybe that’s because it is a bother to attend the home games. Hard Rock Stadium, where the Hurricanes play, is 20 miles from the Miami campus. The driving time between the campus and stadium is about 50-55 minutes. I can’t imagine any high school recruit wanting to go to Miami.

Georgia Tech fired its head football coach Geoff Collins yesterday. In four-plus years at Tech, Collins was 10-28. Tech was 1-3 this season. There is further speculation that Georgia Tech will fire its athletic director Todd Stansbury today. Collins was the third coach to be fired this season. Arizona State’s Herm Edwards was fired last week, and Nebraska’s Scott Frost was fired two weeks ago.

Baseball fans will remember Maury Wills, the record-setting base stealer. Wills died last week. Stealing a record 104 bases in 1962, Wills was the National League MVP that year. He played Major League Baseball from 1959 through 1972, primarily for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wills briefly played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Montreal Expos. Maury Wills, a native of Washington, DC, was 89.

Last week when I predicted Clemson to beat Wake Forest, I said, “Wake is fake.” My friend Tim Muth, who has his master’s degree from Wake Forest, responded, “Wake isn’t fake,” I responded to Tim, sharing a saying that I learned from a University of North Carolina graduate several years ago. The saying goes:

Duke is puke

Wake is fake
And we all hate State

Have a good week!

Weekend Recap

GAME OF THE WEEK: So close – Clemson 51, Wake Forest 45 (2OT) (Touchdown Tom said: Clemson 33, Wake Forest 27). Wake Forest never led in the game until 12:13 to go in the third quarter. That’s when the Deacons took a 21-20 lead. Although the game was tied four times after that, Wake never trailed until the end of the game. Both quarterbacks, Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei and Wake’s Sam Hartman played well enough to win. Both had great games, throwing 11 touchdown passes between them. Uiagalelei passed for 371 yards and Hartman passed for 337 yards. Clemson had 559 total yards. Attendance in Winston-Salem: 32,903

RUNNER-UP: Reveille has a pork dinner – Texas A&M 23, Arkansas 21 (Touchdown Tom said: Arkansas 20, Texas A&M 19). Arkansas grabbed an early 14-0 lead and held onto the lead until 11:41 to go in the third quarter when the Aggies went up 20-14. A&M never trailed after that. Arkansas had a chance to win, but Cam Little’s 42-yard field goal attempt, with 1:30 left in the game, bounced off the right upright.  Attendance in Arlington: 63,580

REST OF THE BEST: Kings of the wild frontier – Tennessee 38, Florida 33 (Touchdown Tom said: Tennessee 30, Florida 24). Although I thought Tennessee would win and I picked Tennessee to win, there were moments during the game when I thought Florida might pull this thing out. But then there were also moments when I thought Tennessee was going to blow the Gators out of the stadium. Florida, this season, reminds me a lot like Tennessee of last season. Last year, Tennessee was playing for a first-year coach. The Vols were trying to find themselves all season. There were times of brilliance and there were times of failure. There was no consistency. But there was talent. It just needed to come together. That’s exactly how Florida is this year. The Gators are playing for a first-year coach. They are trying to find themselves. Sometimes they are good. Sometimes they are bad. They are trying to build consistency. Saturday, Tennessee was the better running team and Florida was the better passing team. Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson passed for 453 yards. Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker passed for 349 yards and rushed for 112 yards. The teams combined for 1,170 total yards. Florida kept it close until 7:55 to go in the fourth quarter when the Vols went up 38-21. Attendance in Knoxville: 101,915

Sloppy Beavers – USC 17, Oregon State 14 (Touchdown Tom said: USC 33, Oregon State 27). Oregon State would have won this game had it not been for four turnovers – all interceptions. USC had no turnovers. Oregon State’s defense did an excellent job of shutting down Lincoln Riley’s offense. USC quarterback Caleb Williams completed less than 50% of his passes. But he threw no interceptions. Attendance in Corvallis: 28,768

Brutus was brutal – Ohio State 52, Wisconsin 21 (Touchdown Tom said: Ohio State 28, Wisconsin 12). The only thing the Badgers had going for them was Braelon Allen. He rushed for 165 yards. Other than that, Wisconsin had nothing. Ohio State had everything going – on all cylinders. Other than C.J. Stroud’s quarterbacking, the Buckeyes TreVeyon Henderson rushed for 121 yards. Two of Wisconsin’s three touchdowns came late in the fourth quarter. Attendance in Columbus: 105,473

Bears raid the bird feeder – Baylor 31, Iowa State 24 (Touchdown Tom said: Iowa State 23, Baylor 20). Two turnovers hurt Iowa State. Both were interceptions. Baylor had no miscues. The Cyclones only had 66 yards rushing. Baylor dominated time of possession for 34:39. Attendance in Ames: 58,069

Okla went homa – Kansas State 41, Oklahoma 34 (Touchdown Tom said: Oklahoma 31, Kansas State 17). Kansas State took a 7-0 lead with 9:57 to go in the first quarter and the Wildcats never trailed for the rest of the game. Oklahoma kept it close. But the Sooners never took the lead. The teams combined for 1,059 total yards. The difference was K-State quarterback Adrian Martinez. The former and much maligned Nebraska quarterback had a hell of a game. This was the performance he has waited for. One without mistakes. Martinez passed for 234 yards and rushed for 148 yards. He scored four touchdowns rushing and one passing. The Sooners couldn’t contain him. Wildcats running back Deuce Vaughn rushed for 116 yards. OU quarterback Dillon Gabriel passed for 330 yards and four touchdowns. K-State controlled the clock: 33:46. The Wildcats were fired up. It was Oklahoma’s third loss to Kansas State in their last four meetings. Attendance in Norman: 84,376

These Turtles were snapping – Michigan 34, Maryland 27 (Touchdown Tom said: Michigan 30, Maryland 18). Maryland gave Michigan a scare. The Terps led throughout most of the second quarter. Michigan came back and retook the lead, but the Wolverines couldn’t shake the Terps. The difference was Michigan running back Blake Corum. He rushed for 243 yards. Attendance in Ann Arbor: 110,225

Let’s hear it for the Gophers – Minnesota 34, Michigan State 7 (Touchdown Tom said: Minnesota 30, Michigan State 26). Is this the year of the Gopher? Minnesota hasn’t looked this impressive in a long time. Michigan State’s only touchdown came with 17 seconds to go in the game. The Gophers had 508 total yards to 240 for the Spartans. State only had 38 yards rushing. Attendance in East Lansing: 74,587

Jalonhawks – Kansas 35, Duke 27 (Touchdown Tom said: Kansas 40, Duke 29). Duke never led in the game, but the Dookies kept it close throughout. Ironically, each quarterback – Duke’s Riley Leonard and Kansas’ Jalon Daniels – passed for 324 yards. Daniels added 83 yards rushing. Daniels had four touchdowns passing and one rushing. Kansas had 528 total yards. Attendance in Lawrence: 47,233

YE OLDE STOMPIMG GROUNDS:

Pounding sand – West Virginia 33, Virginia Tech 10 (Touchdown Tom said: West Virginia 27, Virginia Tech 22). Instead of Metallica, the Hokies were in dire need of The Chordettes: “Please turn on your magic beam, Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream.” Virginia Tech had a dream alright – a nightmare. The Hokies were sinking in quicksand. Entering the fourth quarter it was a single score game. WVU led Virginia Tech, 16-10. However, in the final quarter, the Mountaineers outscored the Hokies, 17-0. Time of possession favored WVU: 38:44. West Virginia had 48 rushing attempts to 18 for Tech. The Hokies only averaged 1.9 yards per carry. Tech quarterback Grant Wells, a native of West Virginia, completed less than 50% of his passes. After two close losses that West Virginia could have and should have won, the Mountaineers needed this win. And they got it. Sandman? How Hokie can you get? Attendance in Blacksburg: 65,632

Just a Flash in the pan – Georgia 39, Kent State 22 (Touchdown Tom said: Georgia 38, Kent State 7). Although Georgia mostly toyed with Kent State, the Golden Flashes wouldn’t go away. Three Georgia turnovers were a help to Kent. Georgia dominated time of possession for 37:00, and the Dawgs had 530 total yards. Attendance in Athens: 92,746

Bevo got castrated – Texas Tech 37, Texas 34 (OT) (Touchdown Tom said: Texas 29, Texas Tech 20). Texas led 31-17 late in the third quarter. Then the Horns ran out of steam. But it was a wild ending to regulation. With 0:21 left in the game, Tech went up 34-31 on a 45-yard field goal. Twenty seconds later, Texas tied the game 34-34 on a 48-yard field goal. Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith passed for 331 yards and two touchdowns. The Red Raiders had 479 total yards and they dominated the clock: 34:02. Attendance in Lubbock: 60,975

Boilers need repair – Purdue 28, Florida Atlantic 26 (Touchdown Tom said: Purdue 33, Florida Atlantic 14). Purdue was playing without its starting quarterback Aidan O’Connell. He was out with an injury. Apparently that made a difference. This game shouldn’t have been this close. FAU quarterback N’Kosi Perry passed for 230 yards and rushed for 93 yards. Attendance in West Lafayette: 55,137

Week 4 Results:  10 winners, 4 fumbles (71.4 percent)

For the Season:  42 winners, 16 fumbles ( 72.4 percent)

Quotes of the Week

“Whether you want to admit it or not, growing up in Carolina, you’re gonna be a Carolina fan. Some people may say State, but really people who go to State just can’t get into Carolina,” North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, knocking intrastate rival NC State.

“Virginia Tech entered to “The Sandman” and left to “Country Roads,” a WVU fan.

Touchdown Tom’s Predictions for

This Week’s 10 Biggest and Most Intriguing Games….and then some

GAME OF THE WEEK: 1. NC State (4-0) at Clemson (4-0) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Clemson had a close call last week. The Tigers were lucky to get by Wake Forest. NC State is 4-0 but have only faced one worthy opponent – Texas Tech. The Wolfpack did look good in that contest. Maybe the Wolfpack have been holding back for Clemson. This one is definitely a test for both teams – a big test. The Tigers weather the storm – Clemson 34, NC State 32.

RUNNER-UP: 2. Kentucky (4-0) at Ole Miss (4-0) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN – Ole Miss is 4-0 but hasn’t really played anybody. The Magnolias are untested. Kentucky’s only test was Florida in The Swamp. The Wildcats handled that one well. They don’t handle this one well – Ole Miss 30, Kentucky 29.

REST OF THE BEST: 3. Alabama (4-0) at Arkansas (3-1) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS – Alabama basically rested last week against Vanderbilt. Arkansas got a workout against Texas A&M. The Hogs may be tired and beat up. They should have won the Texas A&M game. So maybe they will be mad. But not mad enough – Alabama 28, Arkansas 20.

4. Oklahoma State (3-0) at Baylor (3-1) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, FOX – Oklahoma State is untested. Baylor has had two tests – BYU and Iowa State. The Bears passed one of those tests and failed the other one. The Cowboys ace this test, just barely – Oklahoma State 21, Baylor 20.

5. Oregon State (3-1) at Utah (3-1) – (Pac-12 vs. Pac-12) – 2 pm ET, Saturday, P12N – Oregon State had its chance last week against USC and blew it. Too many turnovers. That game was a that home. This one is on the road. Utah is on a roll and the Beavers get rolled – Utah 28, Oregon State 27.

6. Wake Forest (3-1) at Florida State (4-0) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Wake Forest gave its all last week and came up short. They can’t let up now. The Deacons have to give it all this week. FSU warmed up for the Deacons against Boston College. The Noles will be too hot for the Deacs – Florida State 33, Wake Forest 30.

7. Michigan (4-0) at Iowa (3-1) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FOX – Regardless of who wins this game, Iowa will invariably end up with a 7 in its point total. But total is the key word. The Hawkeyes get totaled by the Wolverines – Michigan 16, Iowa 7.

8. Oklahoma (3-1) at TCU (3-0) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ABC – Oklahoma got taken out behind the woodshed last week. Kansas State put it to the Sooners. The Oklahoma should be mad. TCU got by nearby rival SMU. The Frogs won’t get by OU. Sooners don’t like to lose two in a row. They won’t – Oklahoma 45, TCU 30.

9. Washington (4-0) at UCLA (4-0) – (Pac-12 vs. Pac-12) – 10:30 pm ET, Friday, ESPN – Looks like Washington could be one of the surprise teams of 2022. The Huskies have looked good. UCLA is undefeated. But undefeated against a bunch of nobodies. Washington is somebody. The Huskies take Chip Kelly on a sleigh ride – Washington 34, UCLA 24.

10. Texas A&M (3-1) at Mississippi State (3-1) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, SECN – Miss State surprised the Aggies last year. And in College Station at that. After the hard fought win over Arkansas, the Aggies should be believing in themselves. Miss State hasn’t been playing very well this year. No surprises – Texas A&M 35, Mississippi State 31.

Six other games to keep your eyes on during Week 5 are: Texas Tech (3-1) at Kansas State (3-1) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN+…..Michigan State (2-2) at Maryland (3-1) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, FS1…..and Iowa State (3-1) at Kansas (4-0) – (Big 12 vs. Big 2) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2.

Also, Georgia Southern (3-1) at Coastal Carolina (4-0) – (Sun Belt vs. Sun Belt) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN+…..Tulane (3-1) at Houston (2-2) – (AAC vs. AAC) – 7 pm ET, Friday, ESPN…..and California (3-1) at Washington State (3-1) – (Pac-12 vs. Pac-12) – 5:30 pm ET, Saturday, P12N.

YE OLDE STOMPING GROUNDS:

West Virginia (2-2) at Texas (2-2) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, FS1 – What’s going to happen in this game. WVU seems to be getting its act together. Texas suffered a tough loss to Texas Tech. Both coaches – Neal Brown and Steve Sarkisian – need this win. Sarkisian wants it more – Texas 27, West Virginia 26.

Eastern Washington (1-2) at Florida (2-2) – (Big Sky vs. SEC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN+ – After an 0-2 start in the SEC, Florida needs a breather. The Gators thought they were going to get a breather against South Florida. They won but it wasn’t a breather. Eastern Washington will be a breather. Gators catch their breath – Florida 34, Eastern Washington 16

Indiana (3-1) at Nebraska (1-3) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, BTN – All right, it’s time for Nebraska to pull one out, especially at home. The Huskers had a week off to get their ducks in a row. Meanwhile, Indiana was losing to Cincinnati – losing badly. Well, the Hoosiers will lose again – Nebraska 34, Indiana 30.

Virginia (2-2) at Duke (3-1) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday – I generally pick Duke in this game and Virginia usually wins. I’m still sticking with the Dookies. They looked good in the loss to Kansas. They’ll look good in the win over the Wahoos – Duke 21, Virginia 20.

Georgia (4-0) at Missouri (2-2) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, SECN – Another cupcake for Georgia. The icing may be different but the cake is the same. Missouri is a hurting football team. The Dawgs will make them hurt more – Georgia 35, Missouri 10.

Purdue (2-2) at Minnesota (4-0) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Even if the Boilers have Aidan O’Connell back, they still won’t beat Minnesota. I think P.J. Fleck finally has his team this year in Minneapolis. The Gophers are out to kick some ass. The Boilers get booted – Minnesota 33, Purdue 23.

ELSEWHERE AROUND FLORIDA:

SMU (2-2) at UCF (3-1) – (AAC vs. AAC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPNU….

Bethune-Cookman (1-2) at Alabama A&M (0-4) – (SWAC vs. SWAC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday….

College Football Week 4 - Arizona State fires Herm Erdwards

College Football Week 4 – Arizona State fires Herm Edwards

Variety is the spice of the game

College football certainly had its variety over the weekend. There was a little bit of everything – something to like and something not to like. Something to get you excited and something to get you down in the dumps. Something to get you on the edge of your seat and something to get you to fall off your seat.

There were the survivors, the blowouts and the overtimes. If you like numbers, there were the 60s, the 70s, the 3s and the 7s. There was a rebound and there are some coaches who are down – feeling the heat.

Let’s check out the survivors. There were lots of them. Remember Appalachian State last week? Upset winners over Texas A&M. Saturday, App State scored on a 53-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass from Chase Brice to Christian Horn, as time in the game expired, to beat Troy, 32-28. In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with 1:11 left in the game, Wake Forest survived a two-point conversion attempt by Liberty. The Demon Deacons beat the Flames, 37-36. Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman threw two interceptions.

Winless Notre Dame had to score 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally and beat California, 24-17. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman got his first win as coach of the Irish. And speaking of 4th quarter rallies, Arkansas scored 21 unanswered points in the final period to overtake Missouri State, 38-27. The Razorbacks were trailing the Bears, 27-17 with less than 12 minutes to go in the game. Arkansas quarterback K.J. Jefferson passed for 385 yards.

There were a couple of thrillers in the Pac-12. UCLA kicked a 24-yard field goal, as time expired, to beat South Alabama, 32-31. With 4:53 left in the game, Arizona scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jayden de Laura to Jacob Cowing to rally and beat North Dakota State, 31-28.

In addition to Wake Forest, the ACC had two more barn burners. In a game where the lead changed hands six times, Syracuse scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Shrader to Oronde Gadsden to beat Purdue, 32-29. The Syracuse score came with 0:07 on the clock.  The Orange are 3-0. Trailing Old Dominion 14-13, Virginia kicked a 26-yard field goal, as time expired, to edge the Monarchs, 16-14. Virginia had 515 total yards, as quarterback Brennan Armstrong passed for 284 yards.

Trailing Kansas State, 10-7, at halftime, Tulane shut out the Wildcats in the second half and scored 10 points to upset K-State, 17-10. The Green Wave are 3-0. With 0:17 on the clock, Charlotte scored on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Chris Reynolds to Grant Dubose to squeeze by Georgia State, 42-41.

With less than 8 minutes left in the game, Maryland scored a touchdown and then hung on to beat SMU, 34-27. The Terps are 3-0. Trailing South Florida, 28-24, Florida scored on a 3-yard touchdown run by Trevor Etienne, with 5:05 left in the game, and hung on to down the Bulls, 31-28. With just a few seconds on the clock, South Florida missed a field goal attempt.

Those were the cliff hangers. How about some blowouts? Georgia downed South Carolina, 48-7. The Dawgs had 547 total yards and Stetson Bennett was a mastermind passing, going 16-23-0 for 284 yards and two touchdowns. The Gamecocks only score, the first touchdown scored on Georgia this season, came with 53 seconds left in the game. Ole Miss beat Georgia Tech, 42-0. The Magnolias had 547 total yards.

Sean Clifford was a genius, as Penn State stuffed Auburn, 41-12. Clifford was 14-19-0, passing for 178 yards. Oklahoma racked up 580 yards, as the Sooners beat Nebraska, 49-14. The score was 49-7 until three minutes to go in the game. Oregon handed BYU its first loss. The Ducks downed the Cougars, 41-20.

There were two overtime games. Indiana escaped Western Kentucky, 33-30 (OT). The Hilltoppers had 545 total yards in the game. The Hoosiers are 3-0. Last week, Marshall went into South Bend, Indiana, and knocked off Notre Dame, 26-21. Saturday, the Herd lost to Bowling Green, 34-31 (OT). In the loss, Marshall running back Khalan Laborn rushed for 157 yards.

How about some numbers? One team scored in the 70s. Ohio State trashed Toledo, 77-21. The Buckeyes racked up 763 total yards, as C.J. Stroud was 22-27-0, passing for 367 yards and five touchdowns.

An amazing number of teams – eight in all – scored in the 60s. From highest to lowest, Oregon State downed Montana State, 68-28. The Beavers are 3-0. Wisconsin beat New Mexico State, 66-7. The Badgers had 595 total yards. West Virginia won its first game of the season, as the Mountaineers topped Towson, 65-7. All four WVU quarterbacks played in the game. The Mountaineers had 624 total yards. And Southern Miss downed Northwestern State, 64-10. The Golden Eagles had 588 total yards.

Four teams scored 63 points in their victories. Alabama squashed ULM, 63-10. Surprisingly, Bryce Young threw two interceptions. Tennessee blasted Akron, 63-6. The Vols had 676 total yards. Oklahoma State put down Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 63-7. The Cowboys Spencer Sanders was 13-16-0, passing for 242 yards and four touchdowns. And lastly, Kent State beat Long Island, 63-10.

Then there are the 3s. Among several teams, four in particular are 3-0. Three of them surprisingly so. Kansas at 3-0 is better than we thought. The Jayhawks downed Houston, 38-20. Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels passed for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Daniels also rushed for 123 yards and two more touchdowns. Washington State improved to 3-0, beating Colorado State, 38-7. Cougars quarterback Cameron Ward passed for 292 yards and four touchdowns.

Likewise, Washington is 3-0. The Huskies surprised Michigan State, 39-28. Washington quarterback Michael Penix passed for 397 yards and four touchdowns. And finally, as expected, NC State is 3-0. The Wolfpack tripped up Texas Tech, 27-14.

The 7? Well, in their first two games, Iowa only managed 7 points in each contest. Saturday, the Hawkeyes got beyond 7 points, but still had a 7 in their score. Iowa beat Nevada, 27-0. Iowa’s defense has given up only 13 points in three games.

On the rebound? Texas A&M. After losing to Appalachian State last week, the Aggies bounced back Saturday and beat Miami (Florida), 17-9. A defensive struggle, Texas A&M never trailed in the game.

After Saturday’s losses, the seats of five coaches got a lot hotter. Herm Edwards seat got so hot that he got fired after Arizona State lost to Eastern Michigan, 30-21. Willie Taggarts’ bottom got a lot hotter. Florida Atlantic fell to UCF, 40-14. Pat Fitzgerald’s temperature shot up. Northwestern lost to Southern Illinois, 31-24. You can also add Auburn’s Brian Harsin and Georgia Tech’s Geoff Collins to this list. Back to Herm Edwards, he was 26-20 in four years and three games at Arizona State – 1-2 this season.

In Temple’s 16-14 loss to Rutgers, the Owls started true freshman quarterback E.J. Warner. E.J. is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner. In Warner’s first start, he played the entire game. Warner was 19-32-1, passing for 215 yards and one touchdown.

The Ivy League teams began their seasons Saturday. Seven of the eight Ivey League schools were winners. The only loser was Yale. The Bulldogs lost to Holy Cross, 38-14. The seven winners were: Brown 44, Bryant 38; Columbia 38, Marist 3; Cornell 28, VMI 22; Dartmouth 35, Valparaiso 13; Harvard 28, Merrimack 21; Penn 25, Colgate 14, and Princeton 39, Stetson 14.

College football Week 5 began with two games last Friday night. The first game matched two ACC teams – Florida State and Louisville. The Seminoles remained undefeated at 3-0, while the Cardinals fell to 0-2 in ACC play, 1-2 overall. FSU beat Louisville, 35-31. Louisville coach Scott Satterfield is up a creek without a paddle.

In the second game, Wyoming handed Air Force its first loss of the season. The Cowboys (3-1) upset the Falcons, 17-14. Joel Allen, the father of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, sang the National Anthem before the contest. In college, Josh Allen played quarterback at Wyoming.

At a recent meeting, the College Football Playoff board of managers (the 10 FBS conference commissioners, plus the Notre Dame athletic director) discussed the possibility of changing the governance of FBS college football – taking it out from under the NCAA and putting it under the auspices of the CFP. Well, last week, the FBS athletic directors voiced disagreement with the CFP board of managers. At the annual meeting of the FBS athletic directors in Washington, DC, an overwhelming majority of the ADs expressed a strong preference to keep football under the NCAA. However, they added that the NCAA should become more streamlined and less bureaucratic. The idea of separating FBS college football from the NCAA began in December 2020, when the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics proposed it. Stay tuned!

Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson announced he is stepping down on December 31 of this year. Thompson, 66, has been with the MWC for 24 years and has been the conference’s only commissioner in its history. Prior to the MWC, Thompson was the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference for eight years.

Last week, Nebraska fired head coach Scott Frost. Yesterday, Nebraska interim coach Mickey Joseph fired the Huskers’ defensive coordinator Erik Chinander. Nebraska ranks 114th nationally in points allowed and has held only one of its first four opponents to under 30 points. The Huskers rank 124th in rushing defense and 115th against the pass.

CBS Sports reported that Nebraska has contacted Urban Meyer in its search for a new coach. However, ESPN reports that Meyer has had no contact with Nebraska and plans to stay at FOX in his broadcasting position. Stay tuned!

Remember the 1965 instrumental hit “The ‘In’ Crowd” by the jazz band – The Ramsey Lewis Trio? Ramsey Lewis, founder and leader of The Trio, died last week. “The ‘In’ Crowd,” originally recorded and sung by Dobie Gray, was first a hit in the winter of 1965. The Ramsey Lewis Trio’s instrumental version of the song was a hit during the summer and fall of 1965 and reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot 100. That winter, The Ramsey Lewis Trio had a big hit with an instrumental version of “Hang On Sloopy,” which reached No. 11 on the charts. The following summer (1966), the group had a hit with “Wade In The Water.” Lewis was a jazz composer, pianist and radio personality. A native of Chicago, Ramsey Lewis was 87.

Watching some of the Oklahoma-Nebraska game on Saturday, I couldn’t help but think if the Huskers had held on to Scott Frost, they probably would have lost to Oklahoma by only one score.

Dawg bite – Georgia 48, South Carolina 7 (Touchdown Tom said: Georgia 35, South Carolina 20). Georgia led 48-0 before South Carolina even scored. Dawgs quarterback Stetson Bennett sat out much of the second half. Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler was terrible again. Rattler threw two interceptions and barely completed 50% of his passes. Attendance in Columbia: 78,212

The Hurricane lacked an eye – Texas A&M 17, Miami (Florida) 9 (Touchdown Tom said: Texas A&M 21, Miami 20). A defensive battle, neither team displayed much offense. Miami dominated all the stats, but not the score. The Canes never scored a touchdown. Attendance in College Station: 107,245

Just Ducky – Oregon 41, BYU 20 (Touchdown Tom said: Oregon 27, BYU 22). At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Oregon led 38-7. BYU only had 61 yards rushing. The loss was BYU’s first. Attendance in Eugene: 54,463

On the warpath in Derby Town – Florida State 35, Louisville 31 (Touchdown Tom said: Florida State 27, Louisville 20). After a brief 7-0 lead in the first quarter, Florida State never led in the game again until 7:54 to go in the fourth quarter, when the Noles went up 35-31. The game was tied four times. Louisville never led by more than 7 points. Late in the second quarter and trailing 21-14, FSU quarterback Jordan Travis left the game with an ankle injury. Wake Forest took a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter and led until early in the third quarter when Liberty went up for the first time, 23-20. Then it became a dog fight. Liberty missed its two-point conversion attempt at the end of the game, which made the difference. The Deacons only had 23 yards rushing. Both quarterbacks threw two interceptions each. Attendance in Winston-Salem: 32,891

YE OLDE STOMPING GROUNDS:

Bout time – West Virginia 65, Towson 7 (Touchdown Tom said: West Virginia 56, Towson 7). The competition wasn’t the greatest, but WVU finally had something to cheer about. Towson’s only score came on a 96-yard kickoff return. Otherwise, the Tigers were totally shut down. Towson only had 180 total yards. WVU had 624 total yards – almost an equal amount passing and rushing. Attendance in Morgantown: 50,703

Albert is losing his chomp – Florida 31, South Florida 28 (Touchdown Tom said: Florida 40, South Florida 20). Florida was lucky to come away with a win. The Gators were outrushed and outpassed by South Florida. Like the Kentucky game last week, Florida had a good first half (led 24-13) but a terrible second half. Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson was terrible for the second week in a row. Richardson is shaky when he passes. His passes are either too high, too hard or straight into the arms of the defender. Attendance in Gainesville: 88,496

Boom – Oklahoma 49, Nebraska 14 (Touchdown Tom said: Oklahoma 35, Nebraska 18). Nebraska has no defense. Oklahoma had 580 total yards. OU quarterback Dillon Gabriel was 16-27-0, passing for 230 yards and two touchdowns. The Sooners are 3-0. Attendance in Lincoln: 87,161

Relaxed – Duke 49, North Carolina A&T 20 (Touchdown Tom said: Duke 41, North Carolina A&T 12). The Dookies just coasted in this game, resting up for Kansas next week. Duke is 3-0. Attendance in Durham: 32,802

Beep Beep loses his feathers – Texas 41, UTSA 20 (Touchdown Tom said: Texas 40, UTSA 25). This game was 17-17 at the half. Then the Texas defense tightened up in the second half. The Horns outscored the Roadrunners 24-3 after the break. Texas running back Bijan Robinson rushed for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Attendance in Austin: 102,520

Domed – Syracuse 32, Purdue 29 (Touchdown Tom said: Syracuse 26, Purdue 23). This game went back and forth from start to finish. Purdue had a great passing game and a lousy running game – only 61 yards rushing. Up 29-25 with 51 seconds left in the game, Purdue self-destructed with multiple penalties, giving Syracuse the chance to win. Syracuse is 3-0. Attendance in Syracuse: 35,943

Week 3 Results:  14 winners, 2 fumbles (87.5 percent)

For the Season:   32 winners, 12 fumbles (72.7 percent)

Quotes of the Week

“This one is on me. Not my players, not my assistant coaches. I’ve got to do a better job and I will. We’ve got eight games left and we’re going to get ready to win some games,” Nebraska interim coach Mickey Joseph, after the loss to Oklahoma.

“Auburn has become bad and boring with no hope on the horizon,” USA Today columnist Dan Wolken.

“It’s not if, but when,” Paul Finebaum, on Brian Harsin getting fired by Auburn.

Touchdown Tom’s Predictions for

This Week’s 10 Biggest and Most Intriguing Games….and then some

GAME OF THE WEEK: 1. Clemson (3-0) at Wake Forest (3-0) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ABC – Neither team has been truly tested by a tough opponent. Well, Wake Forest was by Liberty. But was that a fluke? Clemson seems to be struggling with some of the same issues on offense that the Tigers struggled with last year. Wake has an offense, but is suspect on defense. Sam Hartman can’t afford to throw any interceptions. Wake is fake – Clemson 33, Wake Forest 27.

RUNNER-UP: 2. Arkansas (3-0) vs. Texas A&M (2-1) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 7 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – The Aggies have the better defense. Arkansas has the better offense. The game is being played on a neutral site. Close game, but offense beats defense. The Pig doesn’t squeal – Arkansas 20, Texas A&M 19.

RESRT OF THE BEST: 3. Florida (2-1) at Tennessee (3-0) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS – Florida’s offense and defense have been playing too erratically to win this game. Tennessee’s defense may be so-so, but the Vols offense looks solid. At this stage, Hendon Hooker is a better quarterback than Anthony Richardson. A learning lesson for the Gators. Smokey is smokin’ – Tennessee 30, Florida 24.

4. USC (3-0) at Oregon State (3-0) – (Pac-12 vs. Pac-12) – 9:30 pm ET, Saturday, P12N – Lincoln Riley has the Trojans looking good, especially the Trojan offense. But that is typical Riley. Oregon State is a bit of a surprise. The Beavers seem to get better and better each week. Playing at home will make it close for USC. Caleb Williams is too good. Beavers get trapped – USC 33, Oregon State 27.

5. Wisconsin (2-1) at Ohio State (3-0) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – This game looked better at preseason than it does now. Wisconsin has been a little disappointing. The Buckeyes haven’t. Another good day for C.J. Not a good day for Bucky – Ohio State 28, Wisconsin 12.

6. Baylor (2-1) at Iowa State (3-0) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Baylor will be favored, but I think the Cyclones will surprise at home. Although, the Bears do have a good defense. Could be a low-scoring game. Cy takes the Bear’s honey – Iowa State 23, Baylor 20.

7. Kansas State (2-1) at Oklahoma (3-0) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 8 pm ET, Saturday, FOX – This game was looking good until Kansas State lost to Tulane. But the Wildcats were obviously looking ahead to Oklahoma. K-State has the better running back – Deuce Vaughn. OU has the better quarterback – Dillon Gabriel. Defenses are even. No cream for the Cats – Oklahoma 31, Kansas State 17.

8. Maryland (3-0) at Michigan (3-0) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FOX – This is probably going to be a rout. But Maryland will be the toughest team the Wolverines have faced this season. Maryland can score. But the Terps have no defense. The Wolverines have both. Shell-less in Ann Arbor – Michigan 30, Maryland 18.

9. Minnesota (3-0) at Michigan State (2-1) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, BTN – Just how good is Minnesota? We’ll soon find out. I think the Gophers are pretty good. The Spartans may have been overrated. But after the loss to Washington, the Spartans will be mad. The Gophers row the boat – Minnesota 30, Michigan State 26.

10. Duke (3-0) at Kansas (3-0) – (ACC vs, Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FS1 – Now, at preseason, who thought these two teams would be undefeated at this point? Kansas definitely has a good offense. The Jayhawks’ defense is weak. Duke is so-so on both sides of the ball. Coach Lance Leipold has Kansas on a roll. And the Dookies get flattened – Kansas 40, Duke 29.

Eight other games to keep your eyes on during Week 4 are: TCU (2-0) at SMU (2-1) – (Big 12 vs. AAC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPNU…..Notre Dame (1-2) at North Carolina (3-0) – (Ind. vs. ACC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC…..James Madison (2-0) at Appalachian State (2-1) – (Sun Belt vs. Sun Belt) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN+….. and Oregon (2-1) at Washington State (3-0) – (Pac-12 vs. Pac-12) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, FOX.

Also, Iowa (2-1) at Rutgers (3-0) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 7 pm ET, Saturday, FS1….Chattanooga (3-0) at Illinois (2-1) – (Southern vs. Big Ten) – 8 pm ET, Thursday, BTN….Wyoming (3-1) at BYU (2-1) – (MWC vs. Ind.) – 10:15 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2….. and Indiana (3-0) at Cincinnati (2-1) – (Big Ten vs. AAC) – 3:30 or 4 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2.

YE OLDE STOMPING GROUNDS:

West Virginia (1-2) at Virginia Tech (2-1) – (Big 12 vs. ACC) – 7:30 pm ET, Thursday, ESPN – Hopefully, the Mountaineers turned over a new leaf during the Towson game. If WVU can escape the costly mistakes and missed opportunities, then the Mountaineers should win. But it’s the Hokies – a nasty rivalry game. Anything can happen. Both teams are equal on defense. WVU is better on offense. The Mountaineers make it happen – West Virginia 27, Virginia Tech 22.

Kent State (1-2) at Georgia (3-0) – (MAC vs. SEC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN+ – Another one of those R&R games for Georgia – rest and relaxation. Just like the Samford game. Kent State has already played Washington and Oklahoma. Now, along comes Georgia. The Golden Flashes are getting some good paychecks. Their athletic department should be restocked financially. Bring out the cheerleaders and band members – Georgia 38, Kent State 7.

Texas (2-1) at Texas Tech (2-1) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – After the close loss to Alabama. Texas has to be taken seriously. They would be more serious if their quarterback wasn’t out. Tech killed itself against NC State – four turnovers. The Horns’ defense is too much for the Red Raiders. Bevo goes on a stampede – Texas 29, Texas Tech 20.

Florida Atlantic (2-2) at Purdue (1-2) – (C-USA vs. Big Ten) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, BTN –  Purdue needs a breather and this will be it. Florida Atlantic is not playing well and its coach is in trouble. Boilers quarterback Aidan O’Connell should have a heyday. Steamed Owls – Purdue 33, Florida Atlantic 14.

ELSEWHERE AROUND FLORIDA:

South Florida (1-2) at Louisville (1-2) – (AAC vs. ACC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN3….

Morehead State (1-2) at Stetson (2-1) – (Pioneer vs. Pioneer) – 1 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN3….
FIU (1-1) at Western Kentucky (2-1) – (C-USA vs. C-USA) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBSSN….

Middle Tennessee (2-1) at Miami (2-1) – (C-USA vs. ACC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ACCN….

Georgia Tech (1-2) at UCF (2-1) – (ACC vs. AAC) – 4 pm, Saturday, ESPNU….
Grambling State (1-2) at Bethune-Cookman (0-2) – (SWAC vs. SWAC) – 4 pm ET, Saturday….

Alabama A&M (0-3) at Florida A&M (1-2) – (SWAC vs. SWAC) – 6 pm ET, Saturday….

Delta State (2-0) at West Florida (2-0) – (Gulf South vs. Gulf South) – 6 pm ET, Saturday….
Boston College (1-2) at Florida State (3-0) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 8 pm ET, Saturday, ACCN….
