College Football
Week 5 – Georgia Tech fires Geoff Collins
Ohio State rolls,
Oklahoma falls;
And Kansas is still undefeated.
After four weeks of football, 21 teams are still undefeated. One of them is Ohio State. The Buckeyes continue to roll. Saturday, Ohio State rolled to a 45-7 third quarter lead over Wisconsin, going on to beat the Badgers, 52-21.
Along the way, the Buckeyes racked up 539 total yards, while holding Wisconsin to 296 total yards. Quarterback C.J. Stroud enhanced his Heisman Trophy potential, passing for 281 yards and five touchdowns. After four contests this season, Ohio State is averaging 49 points (3rd in the country) and 559 total yards (2nd in the country) a game. Meanwhile, other undefeated teams, such as Alabama, Penn State, Tennessee, Minnesota, Washington and NC State, kept rolling too.
However, for some other teams, the rolling stopped on Saturday. One of those teams was Oklahoma, who lost for the first time. The Sooners fell to Kansas State, 41-34. Oklahoma put up numbers that would normally give them a win – 550 total yards, 330 passing yards, scoring in every quarter. Those numbers weren’t good enough Saturday. Especially when Kansas State had 509 total yards, 28 first downs and controlled the ball for 9 more minutes than the Sooners. Meanwhile, other teams, such as North Carolina, Iowa State, Indiana, Arkansas and Maryland, suffered their first loss on Saturday.
Then there were the undefeated teams who barely survived, barely escaped to remain undefeated. Clemson was taken to two overtimes by Wake Forest, before the Tigers pulled out a 51-45 (2OT) win. With less than 5 minutes left in regulation, The Demon Deacons held a 3-point lead over Clemson – 38-35. With 4:01 on the clock, the Tigers evened the score on a 52-yard field goal by B.T. Potter. After one overtime, Clemson was still living on the edge – 45-45. After two overtimes, the Tigers were finally purring.
Out West, another team barely survived, barely escaped to remain undefeated. USC was taken to the final 73 seconds of its game with Oregon State, before the Trojans could pull out a 17-14 win over the Beavers. With less than 2 minutes left in the final quarter, USC trailed Oregon State, 14-10. Then, with 1:13 left on the clock, the Trojans Jordan Addison scored on a 21-yard pass from Caleb Williams. USC went up 17-14 and held on to win. Meanwhile, two other teams – Syracuse and James Madison – barely survived to remain undefeated.
And yes, Kansas is still undefeated. The Jayhawks are 4-0. And we’re talking football, not basketball. Saturday, Kansas beat previously unbeaten Duke, 35-27. The Jayhawks never trailed in the game. This is the Kansas that only won a total of nine games in the past five seasons.
College football Week 4 began Thursday night in Blacksburg, Virginia. That’s where West Virginia poured sand down the Hokies. WVU beat Virginia Tech, 33-10, holding the Hokies to just 35 yards rushing. South of Blacksburg, Coastal Carolina improved to 4-0. The Chanticleers racked up 540 total yards, beating Georgia State, 41-24.
In the nightcap Thursday, Illinois skunked Chattanooga, 31-0. The Banned Indians had 502 yards of offense.
The action continued Friday night with three more games. In the opener, Andre Szmyt kicked a 31-yard field goal with 1:14 remaining in the game to give Syracuse a 22-20 win over Virginia. The Orange are 4-0. In the second contest, Air Force didn’t fly, but instead rolled over Nevada, 48-20. The Falcons had 541 yards on offense – 461 of those rushing.
Friday night ended with UTEP downing Boise State, 27-10. The Miners held the Bulldogs to less than 100 yards passing (93) and less than 100 yards rushing (84), while controlling time of possession for 40:35.
Nothing like dropping the ball on the 1 as you are about to score the winning touchdown. That’s what Missouri’s Nathaniel Peat did on Saturday. The Mizzou running back was about to step into the end zone to give Missouri a 20-14 (OT) win over Auburn. But Peat forgot to take the football into the end zone with him. He dropped it on the one. Auburn recovered it in the end zone. Instead of beating Auburn 20-14 (OT), Missouri lost to Auburn 17-14 (OT).
How about the Fordham-Ohio game? It was a bit reminiscent of the North Carolina-Appalachian State game on opening weekend. North Carolina won that game 63-61 in a wild finish. Saturday, Ohio beat Fordham 59-52 in a wild game, with a wild finish. Trailing the Rams, 52-46, the Bobcats scored two touchdowns in the final 53 seconds of the game to pull out the 59-52 win. Ohio and Fordham combined for 1,332 total yards. North Carolina and App State combined for 1,216 yards in their game.
And speaking of North Carolina, the Tar Heels suffered their first loss. Notre Dame beat North Carolina, 45-32. After an 0-2 start, the Irish are now 2-2. Notre Dame racked up 576 total yards in the game.
And speaking of Appalachian State, the Mountaineers had another wild game. After jumping out to a 28-3 second-quarter lead over James Madison, App State ended up losing the game, 32-28. The Dukes scored 28 unanswered points to pull out the win. All four of App State’s games this season have been settled by 4 points or less – a total of 13 points.
During the week, last week, Miami (Florida) quarterback Tyler Van Dyke ripped the Canes fans for a lack of atmosphere at Miami’s home games. Obviously, there was a lack of atmosphere Saturday. Middle Tennessee beat Miami, 45-31. Van Dyke was benched in the third quarter for a poor performance.
Cincinnati handed Indiana its first loss. The Bearcats downed the Hoosiers, 45-24. Cincinnati quarterback Ben Bryant passed for 354 yards. TCU improved to 3-0, beating rival SMU in a good game, 42-34. TCU running back Kendre Miller rushed for 142 yards.
UCF looked awful, beating Georgia Tech, 27-10. UCF quarterback John Rhys Plumlee only had 49 yards passing. On the bright side, Plumlee had 100 yards rushing. California looked good, beating Arizona, 49-31. Cal had 602 total yards and Bears running back Jaydn Ott rushed for 274 yards.
Navy won its first game of the season. The Middies beat East Carolina, 23-20 (2OT).
Meanwhile, Iowa still likes 7 in its point total. In their first two games, the Hawkeyes scored 7 points in both contests. In their last two games, The Hawkeyes have scored 27 points in both contests. Saturday, Iowa beat Rutgers, 27-10.
Talk about a Rocky Mountain low, football is not exactly experiencing a stellar season in Colorado. The state’s two FBS teams – Colorado and Colorado State – are a combined 0-8. In four games, the Buffaloes have been outscored, 173-17. In four games, the Rams have been outscored, 164-43.
And finally, the rally, and perhaps the wildest finish, of the day occurred in Pullman. Washington. With less than 4 minutes to go in the game, Oregon trailed Washington State, 34-22. The Ducks proceeded to score three touchdowns in 2 minutes and 49 seconds, to rally and beat the Cougars, 44-41. With 3:50 to go, Oregon scored on a 1-yard pass. Then with 1:29 to go, the Ducks scored on a 50-yard pass. And finally, with 1:01 on the clock, Oregon scored on a pick-six. The Oregon comeback was led by former Auburn quarterback Bo Nix. To add to the excitement, Washington State added a final touchdown as time expired.
Miami (Florida) quarterback Tyler Van Dyke came out last week and ripped his school for the lack of an atmosphere at home games. Van Dyke said, “Miami has no atmosphere at its home games.” As a result, he said he prefers playing on the road over playing at home. Van Dyke said most Miami students don’t bother to attend the games.
Maybe that’s because it is a bother to attend the home games. Hard Rock Stadium, where the Hurricanes play, is 20 miles from the Miami campus. The driving time between the campus and stadium is about 50-55 minutes. I can’t imagine any high school recruit wanting to go to Miami.
Georgia Tech fired its head football coach Geoff Collins yesterday. In four-plus years at Tech, Collins was 10-28. Tech was 1-3 this season. There is further speculation that Georgia Tech will fire its athletic director Todd Stansbury today. Collins was the third coach to be fired this season. Arizona State’s Herm Edwards was fired last week, and Nebraska’s Scott Frost was fired two weeks ago.
Baseball fans will remember Maury Wills, the record-setting base stealer. Wills died last week. Stealing a record 104 bases in 1962, Wills was the National League MVP that year. He played Major League Baseball from 1959 through 1972, primarily for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wills briefly played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Montreal Expos. Maury Wills, a native of Washington, DC, was 89.
Last week when I predicted Clemson to beat Wake Forest, I said, “Wake is fake.” My friend Tim Muth, who has his master’s degree from Wake Forest, responded, “Wake isn’t fake,” I responded to Tim, sharing a saying that I learned from a University of North Carolina graduate several years ago. The saying goes:
Duke is puke
Have a good week!

Weekend Recap
GAME OF THE WEEK: So close – Clemson 51, Wake Forest 45 (2OT) (Touchdown Tom said: Clemson 33, Wake Forest 27). Wake Forest never led in the game until 12:13 to go in the third quarter. That’s when the Deacons took a 21-20 lead. Although the game was tied four times after that, Wake never trailed until the end of the game. Both quarterbacks, Clemson’s D.J. Uiagalelei and Wake’s Sam Hartman played well enough to win. Both had great games, throwing 11 touchdown passes between them. Uiagalelei passed for 371 yards and Hartman passed for 337 yards. Clemson had 559 total yards. Attendance in Winston-Salem: 32,903
RUNNER-UP: Reveille has a pork dinner – Texas A&M 23, Arkansas 21 (Touchdown Tom said: Arkansas 20, Texas A&M 19). Arkansas grabbed an early 14-0 lead and held onto the lead until 11:41 to go in the third quarter when the Aggies went up 20-14. A&M never trailed after that. Arkansas had a chance to win, but Cam Little’s 42-yard field goal attempt, with 1:30 left in the game, bounced off the right upright. Attendance in Arlington: 63,580
REST OF THE BEST: Kings of the wild frontier – Tennessee 38, Florida 33 (Touchdown Tom said: Tennessee 30, Florida 24). Although I thought Tennessee would win and I picked Tennessee to win, there were moments during the game when I thought Florida might pull this thing out. But then there were also moments when I thought Tennessee was going to blow the Gators out of the stadium. Florida, this season, reminds me a lot like Tennessee of last season. Last year, Tennessee was playing for a first-year coach. The Vols were trying to find themselves all season. There were times of brilliance and there were times of failure. There was no consistency. But there was talent. It just needed to come together. That’s exactly how Florida is this year. The Gators are playing for a first-year coach. They are trying to find themselves. Sometimes they are good. Sometimes they are bad. They are trying to build consistency. Saturday, Tennessee was the better running team and Florida was the better passing team. Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson passed for 453 yards. Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker passed for 349 yards and rushed for 112 yards. The teams combined for 1,170 total yards. Florida kept it close until 7:55 to go in the fourth quarter when the Vols went up 38-21. Attendance in Knoxville: 101,915
Sloppy Beavers – USC 17, Oregon State 14 (Touchdown Tom said: USC 33, Oregon State 27). Oregon State would have won this game had it not been for four turnovers – all interceptions. USC had no turnovers. Oregon State’s defense did an excellent job of shutting down Lincoln Riley’s offense. USC quarterback Caleb Williams completed less than 50% of his passes. But he threw no interceptions. Attendance in Corvallis: 28,768
Brutus was brutal – Ohio State 52, Wisconsin 21 (Touchdown Tom said: Ohio State 28, Wisconsin 12). The only thing the Badgers had going for them was Braelon Allen. He rushed for 165 yards. Other than that, Wisconsin had nothing. Ohio State had everything going – on all cylinders. Other than C.J. Stroud’s quarterbacking, the Buckeyes TreVeyon Henderson rushed for 121 yards. Two of Wisconsin’s three touchdowns came late in the fourth quarter. Attendance in Columbus: 105,473
Bears raid the bird feeder – Baylor 31, Iowa State 24 (Touchdown Tom said: Iowa State 23, Baylor 20). Two turnovers hurt Iowa State. Both were interceptions. Baylor had no miscues. The Cyclones only had 66 yards rushing. Baylor dominated time of possession for 34:39. Attendance in Ames: 58,069
Okla went homa – Kansas State 41, Oklahoma 34 (Touchdown Tom said: Oklahoma 31, Kansas State 17). Kansas State took a 7-0 lead with 9:57 to go in the first quarter and the Wildcats never trailed for the rest of the game. Oklahoma kept it close. But the Sooners never took the lead. The teams combined for 1,059 total yards. The difference was K-State quarterback Adrian Martinez. The former and much maligned Nebraska quarterback had a hell of a game. This was the performance he has waited for. One without mistakes. Martinez passed for 234 yards and rushed for 148 yards. He scored four touchdowns rushing and one passing. The Sooners couldn’t contain him. Wildcats running back Deuce Vaughn rushed for 116 yards. OU quarterback Dillon Gabriel passed for 330 yards and four touchdowns. K-State controlled the clock: 33:46. The Wildcats were fired up. It was Oklahoma’s third loss to Kansas State in their last four meetings. Attendance in Norman: 84,376
These Turtles were snapping – Michigan 34, Maryland 27 (Touchdown Tom said: Michigan 30, Maryland 18). Maryland gave Michigan a scare. The Terps led throughout most of the second quarter. Michigan came back and retook the lead, but the Wolverines couldn’t shake the Terps. The difference was Michigan running back Blake Corum. He rushed for 243 yards. Attendance in Ann Arbor: 110,225
Let’s hear it for the Gophers – Minnesota 34, Michigan State 7 (Touchdown Tom said: Minnesota 30, Michigan State 26). Is this the year of the Gopher? Minnesota hasn’t looked this impressive in a long time. Michigan State’s only touchdown came with 17 seconds to go in the game. The Gophers had 508 total yards to 240 for the Spartans. State only had 38 yards rushing. Attendance in East Lansing: 74,587
Jalonhawks – Kansas 35, Duke 27 (Touchdown Tom said: Kansas 40, Duke 29). Duke never led in the game, but the Dookies kept it close throughout. Ironically, each quarterback – Duke’s Riley Leonard and Kansas’ Jalon Daniels – passed for 324 yards. Daniels added 83 yards rushing. Daniels had four touchdowns passing and one rushing. Kansas had 528 total yards. Attendance in Lawrence: 47,233
YE OLDE STOMPIMG
GROUNDS:
Pounding sand – West Virginia 33, Virginia Tech 10 (Touchdown Tom said: West Virginia 27, Virginia Tech 22). Instead of Metallica, the Hokies were in dire need of The Chordettes: “Please turn on your magic beam, Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream.” Virginia Tech had a dream alright – a nightmare. The Hokies were sinking in quicksand. Entering the fourth quarter it was a single score game. WVU led Virginia Tech, 16-10. However, in the final quarter, the Mountaineers outscored the Hokies, 17-0. Time of possession favored WVU: 38:44. West Virginia had 48 rushing attempts to 18 for Tech. The Hokies only averaged 1.9 yards per carry. Tech quarterback Grant Wells, a native of West Virginia, completed less than 50% of his passes. After two close losses that West Virginia could have and should have won, the Mountaineers needed this win. And they got it. Sandman? How Hokie can you get? Attendance in Blacksburg: 65,632
Just a Flash in the pan – Georgia 39, Kent State 22 (Touchdown Tom said: Georgia 38, Kent State 7). Although Georgia mostly toyed with Kent State, the Golden Flashes wouldn’t go away. Three Georgia turnovers were a help to Kent. Georgia dominated time of possession for 37:00, and the Dawgs had 530 total yards. Attendance in Athens: 92,746
Bevo got castrated – Texas Tech 37, Texas 34 (OT) (Touchdown Tom said: Texas 29, Texas Tech 20). Texas led 31-17 late in the third quarter. Then the Horns ran out of steam. But it was a wild ending to regulation. With 0:21 left in the game, Tech went up 34-31 on a 45-yard field goal. Twenty seconds later, Texas tied the game 34-34 on a 48-yard field goal. Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith passed for 331 yards and two touchdowns. The Red Raiders had 479 total yards and they dominated the clock: 34:02. Attendance in Lubbock: 60,975
Boilers need repair – Purdue 28, Florida Atlantic 26 (Touchdown Tom said: Purdue 33, Florida Atlantic 14). Purdue was playing without its starting quarterback Aidan O’Connell. He was out with an injury. Apparently that made a difference. This game shouldn’t have been this close. FAU quarterback N’Kosi Perry passed for 230 yards and rushed for 93 yards. Attendance in West Lafayette: 55,137
Week 4 Results: 10 winners, 4 fumbles (71.4 percent)

Quotes of the Week
“Whether you want to admit it or not, growing up in Carolina, you’re gonna be a Carolina fan. Some people may say State, but really people who go to State just can’t get into Carolina,” North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, knocking intrastate rival NC State.
“Virginia Tech entered to “The Sandman” and left to “Country Roads,” a WVU fan.
Touchdown Tom’s Predictions for
GAME OF THE WEEK: 1. NC State (4-0) at Clemson (4-0) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Clemson had a close call last week. The Tigers were lucky to get by Wake Forest. NC State is 4-0 but have only faced one worthy opponent – Texas Tech. The Wolfpack did look good in that contest. Maybe the Wolfpack have been holding back for Clemson. This one is definitely a test for both teams – a big test. The Tigers weather the storm – Clemson 34, NC State 32.
RUNNER-UP: 2. Kentucky (4-0) at Ole Miss (4-0) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN – Ole Miss is 4-0 but hasn’t really played anybody. The Magnolias are untested. Kentucky’s only test was Florida in The Swamp. The Wildcats handled that one well. They don’t handle this one well – Ole Miss 30, Kentucky 29.
REST OF THE BEST: 3. Alabama (4-0) at Arkansas (3-1) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS – Alabama basically rested last week against Vanderbilt. Arkansas got a workout against Texas A&M. The Hogs may be tired and beat up. They should have won the Texas A&M game. So maybe they will be mad. But not mad enough – Alabama 28, Arkansas 20.
4. Oklahoma State (3-0) at Baylor (3-1) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, FOX – Oklahoma State is untested. Baylor has had two tests – BYU and Iowa State. The Bears passed one of those tests and failed the other one. The Cowboys ace this test, just barely – Oklahoma State 21, Baylor 20.
5. Oregon State (3-1) at Utah (3-1) – (Pac-12 vs. Pac-12) – 2 pm ET, Saturday, P12N – Oregon State had its chance last week against USC and blew it. Too many turnovers. That game was a that home. This one is on the road. Utah is on a roll and the Beavers get rolled – Utah 28, Oregon State 27.
6. Wake Forest (3-1) at Florida State (4-0) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Wake Forest gave its all last week and came up short. They can’t let up now. The Deacons have to give it all this week. FSU warmed up for the Deacons against Boston College. The Noles will be too hot for the Deacs – Florida State 33, Wake Forest 30.
7. Michigan (4-0) at Iowa (3-1) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FOX – Regardless of who wins this game, Iowa will invariably end up with a 7 in its point total. But total is the key word. The Hawkeyes get totaled by the Wolverines – Michigan 16, Iowa 7.
8. Oklahoma (3-1) at TCU (3-0) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ABC – Oklahoma got taken out behind the woodshed last week. Kansas State put it to the Sooners. The Oklahoma should be mad. TCU got by nearby rival SMU. The Frogs won’t get by OU. Sooners don’t like to lose two in a row. They won’t – Oklahoma 45, TCU 30.
9. Washington (4-0) at UCLA (4-0) – (Pac-12 vs. Pac-12) – 10:30 pm ET, Friday, ESPN – Looks like Washington could be one of the surprise teams of 2022. The Huskies have looked good. UCLA is undefeated. But undefeated against a bunch of nobodies. Washington is somebody. The Huskies take Chip Kelly on a sleigh ride – Washington 34, UCLA 24.
10. Texas A&M (3-1) at Mississippi State (3-1) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, SECN – Miss State surprised the Aggies last year. And in College Station at that. After the hard fought win over Arkansas, the Aggies should be believing in themselves. Miss State hasn’t been playing very well this year. No surprises – Texas A&M 35, Mississippi State 31.
Six other games to keep your eyes on during Week 5 are: Texas Tech (3-1) at Kansas State (3-1) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN+…..Michigan State (2-2) at Maryland (3-1) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, FS1…..and Iowa State (3-1) at Kansas (4-0) – (Big 12 vs. Big 2) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2.
Also, Georgia Southern (3-1) at Coastal Carolina (4-0) – (Sun Belt vs. Sun Belt) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN+…..Tulane (3-1) at Houston (2-2) – (AAC vs. AAC) – 7 pm ET, Friday, ESPN…..and California (3-1) at Washington State (3-1) – (Pac-12 vs. Pac-12) – 5:30 pm ET, Saturday, P12N.

GROUNDS:
West Virginia (2-2) at Texas (2-2) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, FS1 – What’s going to happen in this game. WVU seems to be getting its act together. Texas suffered a tough loss to Texas Tech. Both coaches – Neal Brown and Steve Sarkisian – need this win. Sarkisian wants it more – Texas 27, West Virginia 26.
Eastern Washington (1-2) at Florida (2-2) – (Big Sky vs. SEC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN+ – After an 0-2 start in the SEC, Florida needs a breather. The Gators thought they were going to get a breather against South Florida. They won but it wasn’t a breather. Eastern Washington will be a breather. Gators catch their breath – Florida 34, Eastern Washington 16
Indiana (3-1) at Nebraska (1-3) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, BTN – All right, it’s time for Nebraska to pull one out, especially at home. The Huskers had a week off to get their ducks in a row. Meanwhile, Indiana was losing to Cincinnati – losing badly. Well, the Hoosiers will lose again – Nebraska 34, Indiana 30.
Virginia (2-2) at Duke (3-1) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday – I generally pick Duke in this game and Virginia usually wins. I’m still sticking with the Dookies. They looked good in the loss to Kansas. They’ll look good in the win over the Wahoos – Duke 21, Virginia 20.
Georgia (4-0) at Missouri (2-2) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, SECN – Another cupcake for Georgia. The icing may be different but the cake is the same. Missouri is a hurting football team. The Dawgs will make them hurt more – Georgia 35, Missouri 10.
Purdue (2-2) at Minnesota (4-0) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Even if the Boilers have Aidan O’Connell back, they still won’t beat Minnesota. I think P.J. Fleck finally has his team this year in Minneapolis. The Gophers are out to kick some ass. The Boilers get booted – Minnesota 33, Purdue 23.
ELSEWHERE AROUND FLORIDA:
SMU (2-2) at UCF (3-1) – (AAC vs. AAC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPNU….
Stetson (3-1) at San Diego (1-3) – (Pioneer vs. Pioneer) – 4 pm ET, Saturday….
