CFW Week 3 Results - Primetime Wins in Overtime

CFW Week 3 Results – Primetime Wins in Overtime

Everything but the kitchen sink,

and my heart was right

Week 3 in college football had everything but the kitchen sink. Who would have thunk a 61-yard field goal as time expired to pull off an upset. Having 18 penalties and only losing by 2 to the No. 3 team in the country. The No. 1 team in the country losing 14-3 as the 3rd quarter began. South Florida tied 3-3 against Alabama with less than 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. South Alabama beating Oklahoma State by 26 points. Expect the unexpected. Week 3 college football was non-stop crazy.

With 4 seconds on the clock and the score tied at 27-27, the Kansas State-Missouri game was all but headed for overtime. Missouri had the ball on the K-State 44. What were the odds of making a 61-yard field goal? But Missouri kicker Harrison Mevis nailed it. He kicked an SEC-record 61-yarder. Missouri, a 4-point underdog, upset Kansas State, 30-27.

In Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, Florida State was a 26-point favorite over Boston College. But the Seminoles only beat the Eagles by 2 points, 31-29. And more bizarre, Boston College came within 2 points, in spite of having 18 penalties for 181 yards in the game.

Yes, with so many big games (Ohio State-Notre Dame, Florida State-Clemson, Colorado-Oregon, etc. etc.) coming up in Week 4, Week 3 was supposed to be the quiet before the storm. Instead, it was everything but.

In Athens, Georgia, South Carolina was a 27-point underdog to Georgia. But as the third quarter began, the Gamecocks were beating the No. 1 Dawgs, 14-3. Georgia rallied in the second half, beating South Carolina, 24-14.

In Tampa, Florida, Alabama was a 35-point favorite over South Florida. But with less than 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, the Tide and the Bulls were tied 3-3. In the closing seconds of the game, Alabama only led 10-3. The Crimson Tide added a touchdown with 33 seconds on the clock and beat South Florida, 17-3.

What was in the water in Stillwater? Oklahoma State was a 7-point favorite over South Alabama. The Jaguars not only upset the Cowboys, but they upset them by 26 points. As the 4th quarter began, South Alabama was beating Oklahoma State by the surprising score of 23-0. The Jaguars went on to beat the Cowboys, 33-7.

In my predictions last week, I went with the favorites in all games but two. In those two games I went with my heart instead of my head. Tennessee was a 6-point favorite over Florida. I picked the Gators. Pitt was a 3-point favorite over West Virginia. I picked the Mountaineers. Florida upset Tennessee, 29-16, and West Virginia upset Pitt, 17-6. My heart upset my head.

Perhaps the most unexpected came late Saturday night. In Boulder, Colorado, Coach Prime’s Buffaloes were a 24-point favorite over Colorado State. But as the 3rd-quarter came to an end. Colorado State led Colorado, 21-14. With less than a minute to go in the game, the Rams led the Buffaloes, 28-20. There were 36 seconds left on the clock. Colorado had the ball on the Colorado State 45. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders connected with receiver Jimmy Horn on a 45-yard pass play. Colorado State 28, Colorado 26. Then Sanders connected with Michael Harrison for the two-point conversion. Colorado State 28, Colorado 28. Overtime!

After the first overtime, the score was 35-35. In the second overtime, Colorado scored, and Colorado State didn’t. Final score: Colorado 43, Colorado State 35.

But other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

College football Week 3 began Thursday night in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Hurricanes beat Bethune-Cookman, 48-7. Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke was 19-23-0, passing for 247 yards and two touchdowns. That same evening in Tennessee, Memphis downed Navy, 28-24. Memphis running back Blake Watson rushed for 169 yards and one touchdown. Navy running back Alex Tecza rushed for 163 yards and one touchdown. Miami and Memphis both improved to 3-0.

Week 3 action continued on Friday night. Maryland beat Virginia, 42-14. Terrapins quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was 19-30-0, passing for 342 yards and one touchdown. Virginia quarterback Anthony Colandrea threw three consecutive interceptions. The Cavaliers had four turnovers. Maryland had none. The Terrapins are 3-0.

In San Antonio, Army held off UTSA, 37-29. Two Army running backs – Hayden Reed and Bryson Daily – had 100 yards rushing. In the loss, UTSA quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger was 17-25-0, passing for 239 yards and three touchdowns.

And finally, in Colorado Springs, Air Force ran over Utah State, 39-21. Two Air Force running backs – Owen Burk and Emmanuel Michel – rushed for more than 100 yards. The Falcons had 344 yards rushing. Air Force is off to a 3-0 start.

Yes, Saturday was a weird day. At halftime, Old Dominion was beating Wake Forest, 17-0. As the 4th quarter began, the Monarchs were still beating the Demon Deacons, 24-13. Wake Forest rallied in the 4th to beat Old Dominion, 27-24.

Ohio, a 3-point underdog, upset Iowa State, 10-7.

Rutgers improved to 3-0, beating Virginia Tech, 35-16. Oregon State and Washington State, the two remaining members of the Pac-12, both improved to 3-0. Oregon State downed San Diego State, 26-9. Washington State crushed Northern Colorado, 64-21. The Beavers and the Cougars face off this week in Pullman.

In Fayetteville, BYU was a 9-point underdog to Arkansas. BYU upset Arkansas, 38-31. Syracuse was only a 3-point favorite over Purdue. In West Lafayette, the Orange beat the Boilers, 35-20.

Nothing like losing to your former team. Sacramento State beat Stanford, 30-23. First-year Stanford coach Troy Taylor was the coach of Sacramento State the past four seasons.

So, I’m thinking Sam Pittman has lost his luster at Arkansas? And is Mike Gundy in trouble at Oklahoma State?

What’s with the lack of a good quarterback at Alabama? After a string of so many great quarterbacks – Bryce YoungMac JonesTua TagovailoaJalen HurtsJake CokerBlake SimsA.J. McCarronGreg McElroy, etc. – it’s hard to comprehend Alabama having a quarterback problem.

There were five interesting and intriguing games I said to keep an eye on. First (South Alabama at Oklahoma State): I knew South Alabama was capable of giving Oklahoma State a good game. I never thought the Jaguars would beat the Cowboys – even less, beating them 33-7…..  Second (San Jose State at Toledo): In spite of three turnovers, Toledo held on to beat San Jose State, 21-17.

Third (James Madison at Troy): In a thriller, James Madison remained undefeated, beating Troy 16-14. Troy had -12 yards rushing…..  Fourth (San Diego State at Oregon State): Oregon State had 475 total yards, beating San Diego State, 26-9…..  Fifth: (TCU at Houston): TCU only led 20-13 at halftime. But the Frogs outscored the Cougars, 17-0, in the second half. TCU racked up 564 total yards, beating Houston, 36-13. Dana Holgorsen has to be in trouble.

The Ivy Leaguers debuted Saturday, with a 5-3 record. The five winners were: Brown 29, Bryant 25; Cornell 23, Lehigh 20; Harvard 45, St. Thomas (MN) 13; Penn 20, Colgate 6, and Princeton 23, San Diego 12. The three losers were: Lafayette 24, Columbia 3; New Hampshire 24, Dartmouth 7, and Holy Cross 49, Yale 24.

It was a defensive battle. On the second play of WVU’s second possession, West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene suffered a foot injury and left the game. He was replaced by Nicco Marchiol who played the rest of the game. Both teams had less than 100 yards passing. Pitt quarterback Phil Jurkovec threw three interceptions. Quotes of the Week

“I don’t care if they hear this in Boulder. When I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat and my glasses off. That’s what my mother taught me,” Colorado State coach Jay Norvell, knocking Deion Sanders for not taking off his hat or sun glasses during press conferences.

“Now he’s messing with my mama,” Colorado coach Deion Sanders, responding to Jay Norvell’s comment.

“You talk about a guy who doesn’t swear, doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke and doesn’t do drugs. He’s a great example for your men and women, and you wanna sit there and talk about if he had on shades and a hat? Like how petty and ridiculous are you to go there about that?,” ESPN GameDay’s Desmond Howard, on Jay Norvell’s comment about Deion Sanders.

“Like you a grown ass man and you sit there and that’s what you wanna talk about? Why does that even bother you? Shouldn’t your attention be on something else? How is your team doing? How are your players doing?,” ESPN GameDay’s Desmond Howard to Colorado State coach Jay Norvell.
