College Football Week 8 - Syracuse at Clemson, UCLA at Oregon

College Football Week 8 – Syracuse at Clemson, UCLA at Oregon

It’s what college football is all about

You couldn’t ask for anything more.

I’m talking about the Alabama-Tennessee, Oklahoma State-TCU and USC-Utah games. Two of the games were between undefeated teams. The third game was between an undefeated team and a one-loss team. All three games had you sitting on the edge of your seat until the very, very end. There were times you were probably falling off the edge of your seat – depending upon who you were cheering for.

Regardless, if your team won or lost or if you were a bipartisan viewer, you had to be into the intensity of the games. And believe me, those three games had plenty of tense moments. Hollywood screenwriters could not have scripted a better or more exciting build up and ending to the games. Those three games contained every emotional element there is and every emotional feeling you could possibly have.

The final score difference in each of the three games was three points or less. One of the three games was not settled until after two overtimes. The home team won all three contests. In two of the three games, the losing team led throughout most of the game. The atmosphere in sports bars all across the county had to be electric.

The combined total yardage of the three games was 3,153 yards. The lead changed hands four times in one of the games. The score was tied three times in one of the games. Three of the six quarterbacks in the three games passed for a combined 1,255yards.

You know the outcomes. But you probably are still talking about the “what ifs” of the three games. Yes, Tennessee shocked Alabama, 52-49, kicking a 40-yard field goal as time expired. TCU rallied to beat Oklahoma State, 43-40 (2OT). And Utah, having scored a touchdown near the end of the game, elected to go for a two-point conversion instead of the one-point kick to beat USC, 43-42.

Those three games provided us with a triple dose of thrills, chills and excitement. It’s what college football is all about. You can’t ask for anything more.

College football Week 7 began on a rainy Wednesday night in Huntington, West Virginia. In the game between Louisiana and Marshall, the Rajin’ Cajuns came out on top. Louisiana beat Marshall, 23-13. The Herd led 7-3 at the break, but the Cajuns outscored Marshall 20-6 in the second half.

Week 7’s early action continued with two games on Thursday night – a Big 12 matchup and an AAC matchup. In the Big 12 encounter, West Virginia pulled out a 43-40 victory over Baylor. WVU’s Casey Legg kicked a 33-yard field goal with 0:33 on the clock to win the game for the Mountaineers. In Orlando, UCF improved to 5-1. The Knights clobbered Temple, 70-13. UCF quarterback John Rhys Plumlee passed for 373 yards and four touchdowns. He rushed for three more touchdowns. The Knights had 737 total yards.

Two more games took place on Friday night. In Dallas, SMU downed Navy, 40-34. The game wasn’t quite as close as the score indicates. As the fourth quarter began, SMU led 33-14. With less than three minutes to go in the game, the Mustangs led 40-20. Navy scored two touchdowns in the final 2:31 of the contest. SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai passed for 336 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 74 yards scoring another touchdown.

In Friday’s second game, UTSA beat FIU, 30-10. UTSA quarterback Frank Harris passed for 303 yards. The Roadrunners improved to 5-2.

In addition to Alabama-Tennessee, Oklahoma State-TCU and USC-Utah, Saturday had several more interesting, exciting and revealing games. We learned that Penn State is not ready for prime time. Michigan gave the Nitts a 41-17 butt kicking. The Wolverines held Penn State to 10 first downs. Nittany Lions fans gave their coach James Franklin a butt kicking on social media following the game.

Ole Miss doesn’t have a defense, but the Magnolias beat Auburn, 48-34. The teams combined for 1,019 total yards. After losing three-straight games, Oklahoma bounced back to down Kansas, 52-42. But it was the fourth-straight game where OU’s defense has given up 41 or more points. A healthy Dillon Gabriel passed for 403 yards. Meanwhile, Kansas suffered its second-straight loss.

After starting out 2-2, Texas has won three-straight to improve to 5-2. The Longhorns edged Iowa State, 24-21. Trailing the Cyclones 21-17, Texas scored a touchdown with 4:43 on the clock to pull out the victory. Bret Bielema rules again – at least in the Big Ten West. Illinois improved to 6-1, knocking off Minnesota, 26-14.

Previously undefeated James Madison and Coastal Carolina suffered their first losses. Georgia Southern upset James Madison, 45-38, while Old Dominion upset Coastal Carolina, 49-21. ODU running back Blake Watson rushed for 226 yards and three touchdowns. Conversely, Colorado won its first game of the season. The Buffaloes beat California, 20-13. Colorado fans rushed the field following the win.

Syracuse remained undefeated. The Orange downed NC State, 24-9. Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren just can’t cut the mustard. What got into Stanford? Coming into the game with Notre Dame, the Trees had looked dismal. But Saturday, they looked everything but dismal, beating the Irish, 16-14. Notre Dame has three losses.

After three-straight losses, Arkansas bounced back big time. The Razorbacks beat BYU, in Provo, 52-35. Arkansas quarterback K.J. Jefferson passed for 367 yards and five touchdowns. Washington outlasted Arizona. The Huskies downed the Wildcats, 49-39. Washington quarterback Michael Penix passed for 516 yards and four touchdowns. Washington and Arizona combined for 1,134 total yards and 62 first downs.

In Saturday night’s late shows, Oregon State downed Washington State, 24-10, and Air Force clobbered UNLV, 42-7.

Six teams – Alabama, Coastal Carolina, James Madison, Oklahoma State, Penn State and USC – lost for the first time Saturday. Nine teams – Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Syracuse, TCU, Tennessee and UCLA – remain undefeated. Clemson and Syracuse meet this week. UCLA has a tough game at Oregon. TCU hosts a tough encounter with Kansas State. Ole Miss has a hairy game at LSU. Stay tuned!

Although Florida lost to LSU, 45-35, Rockledge Gator, Bootsie, Swamp Mama and I had a good football weekend in Gainesville. But I have to say the Friday traffic going north on the Florida Turnpike and I-75 was brutal. I have never seen it so bad, especially for the entire trip. All lanes were packed and the traffic was moving slowly – stopped at times. I don’t know what was going on. We lunched at Sonny’s BBQ off I-75 near Belleview, Florida.

Friday evening, we had a casual dinner at Gator’s Dockside in Ocala. Back at the hotel, we sat in the lounge off the lobby and had fun talking about everything and everybody.

Saturday, we lunched at Miller’s Ale House at Celebration Pointe in Gainesville. Good place. First time we had eaten there. Millers had lots of big screen TVs. We watched all the 12 noon games – Penn State-Michigan, Auburn-Ole Miss, Kansas-Oklahoma, Iowa State-Texas, Minnesota-Illinois and Miami-Virginia Tech.

After lunch, we visited a few shops in Celebration Pointe. Saturday afternoon, after finding a parking spot for the game, we checked into the University of Florida Alumni Center. At the alumni center we relaxed while watching much of the Alabama-Tennessee game on the big screen.

At 6 p.m. we walked over to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and took our seats for the LSU-Florida game. The game was frustratingly enjoyable for a while. But when LSU went up 42-21 in the third quarter, there was no more joy. It quickly became all frustration.

After a long day Saturday, the four of us slept well that night. But I did watch most of the fourth quarter of the USC-Utah game before dozing off. The ride home Sunday was pleasant. The traffic was light.

Yes, Saturday was a monumental day in college football. It’s rare you have a triple feature as good as Alabama-Tennessee, Oklahoma State-TCU and USC-Utah. Folks will be talking about those games for a long time.

If you like college basketball, as I do, you’ll be interested to know that serious talks are taking place to expand the NCAA Basketball Tournament from 68 to 96 teams. In the plan, 32 teams would get a first-round bye. The other 64 teams would each play a first-round game – 32 games. The 32 winners would join the 32 teams that got a bye for a 64-team tournament. The expansion could come as soon as 2024. Stay tuned!

And speaking of timing and expansion, the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, which has been approved to commence in 2026, may now actually start two years sooner in 2024. There are serious talks going on to get the 12-team playoff started earlier than 2026. Stay tuned!

Did you ever hear of a mascot causing a game to be delayed? Did you ever hear of defecation causing a game to be delayed? Well, you’ve heard it now. The start of Friday night’s Navy-SMU game was delayed 15 minutes. Why? Well, during pregame festivities at SMU, the school’s live mascot pony “Peruna” runs across the field led by its handler. Friday night, before the game with Navy, Peruna not only ran across the field, but also Peruna defecated on the field. It took the grounds crew 15 minutes to clean up Peruna’s mess. I guess that was Peruna’s way of saying, “This is for you, Navy.”

Weekend Recap

GAME OF THE WEEK: Rocky Tide was Topped – Tennessee 52, Alabama 49 (Touchdown Tom said: Tennessee 27, Alabama 24). Tennessee got off to a fast start. The Vols led Alabama 21-7 in the first quarter, and 28-10 in the second quarter. But the Vols couldn’t shake the Tide. Early in the fourth quarter, the game was tied, not Tide, 28-28. And back and forth it went for the rest of the game until Tennessee kicked its 40-yard field goal as time expired. Combined, the teams had 61 first downs and more than 1,200 total yards. Interestingly, Alabama controlled time of possession for 37:29. Bama quarterback Bryce Young passed for 455 yards. Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker passed for 385 yards and rushed for 71 yards. Bama had 17 penalties for 130 yards. The Vols had 6 penalties for 39 yards. Tennessee fans rushed the field and tore down the goal post. Attendance in Knoxville: 101,915

RUNNER-UP: Butt kicking – Michigan 41, Penn State 17 (Touchdown Tom said: Michigan 24, Penn State 21). With 13:15 to go in the third quarter, Penn State actually led 17-16. But that was the last we heard from the Nitts. Michigan proceeded to score 25 unanswered points. Penn State only had 10 first downs. Michigan controlled possession for an amazing 41:56. Michigan running backs Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum rushed for 173 and 166 yards, respectively. They scored two touchdowns each. Penn State coach James Franklin was trashed on social media following the game. Attendance in Ann Arbor: 110,812

REST OF THE BEST: Rally – TCU 43, Oklahoma State 40 (2OT) (Touchdown Tom said: TCU 37, Oklahoma State 35). Oklahoma State controlled most of the game. The Cowboys led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, 24-13 at halftime time and 30-16 after three quarters. TCU rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Okie State, 14-0. The score was 30-30 at the end of regulation. The Frogs dominated the stats – first downs, rushing yards, passing yards and time of possession. Okie State quarterback Spencer Sanders had a terrible game. TCU’s Max Duggan was 23-40-0, passing for 286 yards and two touchdowns. Attendance in Fort Worth: 49,594

Undefeated – Syracuse 24, NC State 9 (Touchdown Tom said: Syracuse 27, NC State 22). Syracuse took control early and never trailed. NC State kept things reasonably close, but not close enough. Neither team had much offense, especially not NC State. But the Wolfpack dominated time of possession – 35:06. In spite of two turnovers, Syracuse pulled out the win. The Orange defense was good. Attendance in Syracuse: 49,705

Tigers get by – Clemson 34, Florida State 28 (Touchdown Tom said: Clemson 30, Florida State 23). At the end of three quarters, Clemson led 34-14. Florida State rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Clemson, 14-0. But it was too little too late. FSU dominated the stats – first downs, passing yards and rushing yards. The Noles are 2-3 in ACC play. Attendance in Tallahassee: 71,098

What an ending! – Utah 43, USC 42 (Touchdown Tom said: Utah 28, USC 27). This was an amazing game. Although the score was tied twice at 28-28 and 35-35, USC never trailed in the game until the very end when the Utes went up 43-42. The two teams combined for 1,121 total yards. The difference between the teams in total yards was just 3 yards. USC had 12 penalties for 93 yards. Utah had 5 penalties for 42 yards. Utah quarterback Cameron Rising passed for 415 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 60 yards and three more touchdowns. USC quarterback Caleb Williams passed for 381 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 57 yards. Attendance in Salt Lake City: 53,609

Bielema rules – Illinois 26, Minnesota 14 (Touchdown Tom said: Minnesota 16, Illinois 15). Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck isn’t exactly rowing the boat anymore. He’s swamping the boat. The Gophers only had 12 first downs and 38 yards passing. The Banned Indians maintained possession for 40:04. Illinois quarterback Tommy DeVito was 25-32-0, passing for 252 yards and one touchdown. Illinois running back Chase Brown rushed for 180 yards. Illinois improved to 6-1. Attendance in Minneapolis: 45,683

Will L. downs Will R. – Kentucky 27, Mississippi State 17 (Touchdown Tom said: Mississippi State 30, Kentucky 25). Miss State entered the game on a three-game winning streak. The wildcats put an end to that. Kentucky bounced back from its loss to South Carolina last week. Miss State’s offense was flat – 22 yards rushing. The Bulldogs' passing game wasn’t much better. State only had 13 first downs. Kentucky controlled ball possession for 39:22. Wildcats Chris Rodriguez rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Both teams are 5-2. Attendance in Lexington: 61,451

Tough loss – North Carolina 38, Duke35 (Touchdown Tom said: North Carolina 26, Duke 21). The game went back and forth. North Carolina led; Duke led. The Heels led; the Dookies led. UNC led; Duke led. It was like that. Duke led 35-31 with less than a minute to go in the game. The Heels scored a touchdown with 0:16 on the clock to win the game. The teams combined for 1,082 total yards. Duke was the better rushing team. UNC was the better passing team. Heels quarterback Drake Maye was 28-38-0, passing for 380 yards and three touchdowns. Maye also rushed for 70 yards. Duke quarterback Riley Leonard passed for 245 yards and one touchdown. Leonard also rushed for 130 yards and another touchdown. North Carolina improved to 6-1. Attendance in Chapel Hill: 40,004

Defenseless – LSU 45, Florida 35 (Touchdown Tom said: Florida 30, LSU 27). Florida scored first with 14:01 to go in the first quarter on a beautiful 51-yard pass from Anthony Richardson to Justin Shorter. That was about the one and only time Florida looked good in the game. Florida may have the most woeful defense in the country, especially against the pass – even worse than West Virginia’s. LSU had 528 total yards. Trailing 42-21 in the third quarter, Florida closed the gap to 42-35 with 7:39 left in the game. But the Gators couldn’t keep their rally going. LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels was 23-32-0, passing for 349 yards and three touchdowns. Daniels rushed for three more touchdowns. Attendance in Gainesville: 90,585

YE OLDE STOMPING GROUNDS:

Wonders never cease – West Virginia 43, Baylor 40 (Touchdown Tom said: Baylor 24, West Virginia 23). It’s not often you can give up 560 total yards to the other team and still win the ball game. Although WVU did have 500 total yards of its own. Seven of WVU’s points came off a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. Two of WVU’s points came off of a blocked extra point kick recovered and returned for a score. Those nine points made the difference in the game for the Mountaineers. WVU scored first and went up 7-0. But when Baylor scored the next 17 unanswered points, it looked like the Bears may have a rout going. But WVU scored the next 14 points, and the game was tied – 17-17. Then Baylor scored and WVU responded – 24-24. Baylor scored again and WVU responded again – 31-31. It was on Baylor’s next touchdown when WVU blocked and scored on the extra point kick. The Eers trailed 37-33. With 7:06 to go in the game, WVU scored a touchdown. The Mountaineers led for the first time since the first quarter – 40-37. Baylor kicked a field goal with 1:40 left in the game. Again, the game was tied – 40-40. WVU won on a 22-yard field goal with less than a minute to go. WVU running back Tony Mathis rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Baylor is 0-6 at Mountaineer Field. Attendance in Morgantown: 45,293hdown

Boiled Corn – Purdue 43, Nebraska 37 (Touchdown Tom said: Purdue 27, Nebraska 26). Nebraska never led in the game. But the Huskers kept it close throughout. Purdue had 38 first downs to only 15 for the Huskers. Purdue also racked up 611 total yards. The Boilers controlled possession for 42:42. Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell passed for 391 yards and four touchdowns. Amazingly, Purdue had a rushing game, something the Boilers rarely have. Purdue running back Devin Mockobee rushed for 178 yards. Attendance in West Lafayette: 61,320

Uga relaxes – Georgia 55, Vanderbilt 0 (Touchdown Tom said: Georgia 45, Vanderbilt 11). What can you say. Georgia was playing Vanderbilt. The Dawgs held Vandy to 10 first downs and 150 total yards – only 45 yards rushing. Georgia had 579 total yards and controlled possession for 39:00. Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett was 20-34-0, passing for 289 yards and two touchdowns. Attendance in Athens: 92,746

Week 7 Results:  9 winners, 4 fumbles (69.2 percent)

“Can’t imagine the scene in Knoxville tonight,” ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit, after Tennessee’s 52-49 win over Alabama.

“We didn’t answer the bell today. You have to give them a lot of credit. But we didn’t execute well enough,” Alabama coach Nick Saban, on the Tide’s 52-49 loss to Tennessee.

“I’m pissed right now because we lost. Shit, I’m ready to go practice right now,” USC coach Lincoln Riley, following the Trojans’ 43-42 loss to Utah.

Touchdown Tom’s Predictions for

This Week’s 10 Biggest and Most Intriguing Games….and then some

GAME OF THE WEEK: 1. Syracuse (6-0) at Clemson (7-0) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ABC – The luck of the Orange is about to run out. If this game were in Syracuse, the Orange would have a chance. But not in Clemson. After a so-so game against Florida State, D.J. Uiagalelei is due to have a good game for the Tigers. Dabo is a happy man – Clemson 30, Syracuse 27.

RUNNER-UP: 2. UCLA (6-0) at Oregon (6-1) – (Pac-12 vs. Pac-12) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, FOX – A really big game in the Pac-12. As big as last week’s game between USC and Utah. Maybe bigger. The Bruins luck is about to run out. The Ducks are making up for that opening season loss. Bo nixes the Bruins – Oregon 30, UCLA 24.

REST OF THE BEST: 3. Kansas State (5-1) at TCU (6-0) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 8 pm ET, Saturday, FS1 – TCU may have run out of steam after last week’s rally against Oklahoma State. The Frogs better not get behind Kansas State. Otherwise, it could be curtains for TCU. The Frogs learned their lesson last week – TCU 23, Kansas State 20.

4. Ole Miss (7-0) at LSU (5-2) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS – Hard one to pick. LSU plays great one week, bad the next. Ole Miss has a good offense. But a lousy defense. Tennessee won in Baton Rouge. It’s hard to see Ole Miss winning in Baton Rouge. Kiffin is no Tiger – LSU 37, Ole Miss 34.

5. Mississippi State (5-2) at Alabama (6-1) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 7 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – Poor Mississippi State. Alabama will take out its anger on the Bulldogs. Bryce Young may pick the Bulldogs to pieces. Will Rogers stumbled last week against Kentucky, and he’ll stumble this week. Saban won’t put up with any nonsense. It’s hopeless for the Bulldogs – Alabama 28, Mississippi State 19.

6. Texas (5-2) at Oklahoma State (5-1) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Texas has been playing well lately. But Bevo’s luck is about to run out. After losing to TCU last week the Cowboys aren’t going to lose this week – no way. Gundy gets the SarkOklahoma State 31, Texas 27.

7. Troy (5-2) at South Alabama (5-1) – (Sun Belt vs. Sun Belt) – 7:30 pm ET, Thursday, ESPNU – Troy is on a roll. After a 1-2 start, the Trojans have won four-straight. But South Alabama is on a roll of its own – three-straight. Make it five straight for the Trojans – Troy 24, South Alabama 21.

8. Minnesota (4-2) at Penn State (5-1) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Penn State will take out its anger on Minnesota. The Gophers are streaky. But, in general, they are not a good team. Fleckless – Penn State 30, Minnesota 17.

9. Boise State (4-2) at Air Force (5-2) – (MWC vs. MWC) – 7 pm ET, Saturday, CBSSN – Good game in the MWC. Both teams have had a couple of miscues this season. But otherwise, they are playing strong. Home field favors the Falcons. Thunderbirds panic the Broncos – Air Force 31, Boise State 29.

10. Kansas (5-2) at Baylor (3-3)  – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Don’t know if Kansas will have Jalon Daniels back this week. Even if they do, it won’t make a difference. Baylor is due for a win. Bear claws – Baylor 44, Kansas 37.

Four other Week 8 games to keep an eye on are: Iowa (3-3) at Ohio State (6-0) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FOX…..BYU (4-3) at Liberty (6-1) – (Ind. vs. Ind.) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPNU…..Memphis (4-3) at Tulane (6-1) – (AAC vs. AAC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2…..and Texas A&M (3-3) at South Carolina (4-2) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, SECN.

YE OLDE STOMPING GROUNDS:

West Virginia (3-3) at Texas Tech (3-3) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 3 pm ET, Saturday, FS1 – West Virginia surprised us against Baylor. I don’t look for any surprises in Lubbock. Neal Brown has bad luck against Texas Tech. That bad luck streak continues – Texas Tech 35, West Virginia 30.

Duke (4-3) at Miami (Florida) (3-3) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 12 :30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN3 – The Dookies came so close against North Carolina. Close but no cigar. There will be no cigars for the Dookies in Miami. Van Dyke smokes them all – Miami 30, Duke 25.

Purdue (5-2) at Wisconsin (3-4) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – I’m going to take a chance on Purdue again. The Boilers can score, but their defense is weak. Wisconsin doesn’t have that strong of an offense. Boiler power – Purdue 23, Wisconsin 20.

ELSEWHERE AROUND FLORIDA:

Stetson (3-2) at Dayton (4-2) – (Pioneer vs. Pioneer) – 1 pm ET, Saturday….

FIU (2-4) at Charlotte (1-6) – (C-USA vs. C-USA) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN3….

Florida Atlantic (3-4) at UTEP (3-4) – (C-USA vs. C-USA) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN+….

Bethune-Cookman (1-5) at Mississippi Valley State (0-7) – (SWAC vs. SWAC) – 4 pm ET, Saturday….

Mississippi College (4-3) at West Florida (5-1) – (Gulf South vs. Gulf South) – 5 pm ET, Saturday….
