College Football Week 3 - The Pac is Back, the Pac-12

College Football Week 3 – The Pac is back, the Pac-12

How ’bout them Ducks!

Oregon not only beat Ohio State, but they also beat Ohio State in Columbus, and they not only beat Ohio State in Columbus, but they also put 35 points on the board against Ohio State in Columbus. Oregon upset third-ranked Ohio State, 35-28. Yes, how ’bout them Ducks!

And to add icing on Oregon’s cake, Ohio State never led in the game. After a scoreless first quarter, it took Oregon only 33 seconds into the second quarter to grab a 7-0 lead on the Buckeyes. And the Ducks never looked back.

Although Ohio State tied the game – 7-7 – less than six minutes later, the Ducks led at halftime, 14-7. Oregon went on to take a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter and a 28-14 lead midway through the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, the Ducks led, 35-21. And so it went. It was a good day to be a Duck – and it wasn’t even raining.

It was also a good day for the CJ’s. Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud passed for 484 yards and three touchdowns. Stroud’s only flaw was an interception thrown late in the fourth quarter, as Ohio State, trailing 35-28, was driving for a touchdown. Oregon running back C.J. Verdell rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns. One was a 77-yard touchdown run. Verdell was also Oregon’s leading receiver with three receptions for 34 yards and another touchdown.

In spite of the loss, Ohio State can still hang its hopes on the 2014 season. In that season, the first of the College Football Playoff, Ohio State also lost its second game of the season – and lost the game in Columbus. On September 6, 2014, Virginia Tech beat the Buckeyes, 35-21.

But, in that 2014 season, Ohio State went on to win the rest of its games and make the College Football Playoff. And in the playoff, Ohio State beat Alabama, 42-35, in the semifinals and Oregon, yes Oregon, 42-20 in the championship game.

On September 11, 2021, Ohio State lost its second game of the season – and lost the game in Columbus. Like 2014, the Buckeyes gave up 35 points.

Will 2021 end in déjà vu?

Then, there’s the tale of two coaches – Steve Sarkisian of Texas and Mike Norvell of Florida State. Arkansas shocked favored and 15th-ranked Texas, 40-21. First-year Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian is off to a shaky start.

And speaking of shaky starts, second-year Florida State coach Mike Norvell, who had a rough season last year, is off to an 0-2 start this season. Florida State lost to Jacksonville State, 20-17. Trailing 17-14, Jax State scored a touchdown on the final play of the game.

Is Sarkisian headed down the same path of his two consecutive predecessors – Tom Herman and Charlie Strong? And is Norvell headed down the same path of his predecessor Willie Taggart? Déjà vu in Austin? Déjà vu in Tallahassee?

Holy Toledo, Kellyman! With less than two minutes to go in the Toledo-Notre Dame game, Toledo led Notre Dame, 29-24. However, with only 1:09 on the clock, the Irish scored a touchdown on an 18-yard pass from Jack Coan to Michael Mayer. Following a two-point conversion, eighth-ranked Notre Dame held on to beat Toledo, 32-29. But Irish coach Brian Kelly has to be suffering from major heart burn and indigestion. That’s two-straight weeks Notre Dame has barely pulled out a win. Last week, the Irish beat Florida State, 41-38, in overtime.

What a weekend!

Week 2 college football began Friday night in Conway, South Carolina. Coastal Carolina improved to 2-0, beating Kansas, 49-22. The Chanticleers are off to another great season. Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall was 17-21-0, passing for 245 yards and two touchdowns.

In the other games Friday night, Duke got back on the winning track. The Blue Devils downed North Carolina A&T, 45-17. Utah State improved to 2-0. The Aggies topped North Dakota, 48-24. Utah State quarterback Logan Bonner was 21-33-1, passing for 390 yards and four touchdowns. The Aggies racked up 621 total yards.

Boise State rebounded from its opening loss to UCF. The Broncos trashed UTEP, 54-13. Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier was 17-24-0, passing for 340 yards and two touchdowns.

In addition to Ohio State and Texas, three other ranked teams – No. 9 Iowa State, No. 14 USC and No. 21 Utah – lost on Saturday. And in addition to Notre Dame, two more ranked teams – No. 5 Texas A&M and No. 22 Miami (Florida) almost lost.

Iowa State fell to 10th-ranked Iowa, 27-17. The Cyclones suffered four turnovers – one fumble and three interceptions. USC was shocked by Stanford, 42-28. The Trojans never led in the game. Clay Helton is in serious trouble. And Utah was stunned by BYU, 26-17.

Trailing Colorado throughout the game – first 7-0 and then 7-3 – Texas A&M scored a touchdown with 2:41 on the clock to beat the Buffaloes, 10-7. In Florida, Miami’s Andres Borregales kicked a 43-yard field goal with 2:04 left in the game and the Canes slipped by Appalachian State, 25-23.

If you like offense and you like thrillers, you would have liked the Wyoming-Northern Illinois and Memphis-Arkansas State games. First in DeKalb, Illinois, Wyoming was trailing Northern Illinois, 43-42, with less than two minutes to go in the game. Then with only 1:35 on the clock, the Cowboys scored a touchdown, coupled with a two-point conversion. In the end, Wyoming beat Northern Illinois, 50-42.

In Jonesboro, Arkansas, Memphis led Arkansas State, 55-36, late in the fourth quarter. The Red Wolves rallied, scoring two touchdowns with less than five minutes to go in the game. But when it was over, Arkansas State came up short, losing to Memphis, 55-50. The teams combined for 1,352 total yards.

In the SEC, South Carolina and Mississippi State improved to 2-0. The Gamecocks kicked two field goals in the final 6:46 of the game to beat East Carolina, 20-17. The second field goal came as time expired. Mississippi State played defense, as the Bulldogs downed NC State, 24-10.

In Week 0, Illinois surprised Nebraska, 30-22. Since then it’s been a hard row to hoe for first-year Illinois coach Bret Bielema. Last week, UTSA beat Illinois, 37-30. Saturday, the Banned Indians lost to Virginia, 42-14. Cavaliers quarterback Brennan Armstrong passed for 405 yards and five touchdowns.

And finally, Wake Forest likes teams from Norfolk. Last week the Demon Deacons beat Old Dominion, 42-10. Saturday, the Deacs polished off Norfolk State, 41-16.

Florida Atlantic quarterback N’Kosi Perry has signed an NIL deal with Islamorada Beer Company of Islamorada, Florida. It’s the first NIL deal signed between a college athlete and an alcohol-based company. Perry will promote and endorse Islamorada on social media. The financial terms of the contract were not disclosed. Perry, 23, is a graduate transfer at FAU, having originally played for Miami (Florida).

And speaking of NIL deals, Michigan-based United Wholesale Mortgage Co. is paying 133 Michigan State men’s basketball and football players $500 a month throughout the school year. All the players have to do is promote and endorse the mortgage company on their social media.

“Student body right.” Legendary USC running back Sam ‘Bam’ Cunningham died last week. His performance against Alabama in a win for USC in 1970 is credited with integrating football in the South. He played for USC from 1970-72 and for the New England Patriots from 1973-82. In Birmingham, in 1970, USC beat Alabama, 42-21. Cunningham rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Sam Cunningham was 71.

“Shake down the thunder from the sky.” Former Notre Dame football coach Terry Brennan also died last week. Brennan, a native of Milwaukee, played for Notre Dame from 1945 to 1948. He was the head coach of the Irish from 1954 to 1958, with a record of 32-18. Terry Brennan was 93.

Being the Auburn fan that she is, Bootsie is not exactly a fan of Alabama coach Nick Saban. And that’s putting it mildly. Whenever those Aflac commercials appear on TV, Rockledge Gator always has to make sure that there are no loose objects within reach of her hands.

Yes, what a weekend it was. How ’bout them Ducks!

Weekend Recap

GAME OF THE WEEK: Puddles quacked, Brutus cracked – Oregon 35, Ohio State 28 (Touchdown Tom said: Ohio State 38, Oregon 27). The two teams combined for 1,117 yards – 612 for Ohio State and 505 for Oregon. The Buckeyes were the better passing team – 484 yards. The Ducks were the better running team – 269 yards. In the first half, Ohio State had four drives inside the 40 but never scored. Ohio State receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had seven catches for 145 yards, Chris Olave had 12 receptions for 126 yards and Garrett Wilson had eight catches for 117 yards. That’s not bad. Oregon won in spite of playing without its All-American defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, who missed the game due to a left-ankle sprain. Attendance in Columbus: 100,482

RUNNER-UP: Cy sighs – Iowa 27, Iowa State 17 (Touchdown Tom said: Iowa 23, Iowa State 20). At the end of the first quarter, Iowa State led, 3-0. Midway through the second quarter, Iowa went up 7-3 and the Hawkeyes never looked back for the rest of the game. Oddly, Iowa won the game in spite of only 173 total yards – 67 rushing, 106 passing. But the Hawkeyes defense did shut down Cyclones running back Breece Hall (69 yards rushing) and quarterback Brock Purdy (138 yards passing). Attendance in Ames: 61,590

REST OF THE BEST: Where’s the offense? – Texas A&M 10, Colorado 7 (Touchdown Tom said: Texas A&M 31, Colorado 26). Colorado scored its lone touchdown in the first 2:24 of the game. After a long drought, Texas A&M scored its lone touchdown with 2:41 left in the game. Seth Small’s 41-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the first half was the difference in the game. Attendance in Denver: N/A

SEC! Really, Texas? – Arkansas 40, Texas 21 (Touchdown Tom said: Texas 27, Arkansas 18). This game wasn’t even close. Arkansas held leads of 33-7 and 40-14. The Razorbacks rushing game was the difference. Arkansas had 333 yards rushing. Attendance in Fayetteville: 83,538

Watch out for the Wildcats – Kentucky 35, Missouri 28 (Touchdown Tom said: Kentucky 31, Missouri 26). Early in the fourth quarter, the game was tied, 28-28. Kentucky had 522 total yards, including 343 yards rushing. Wildcats running back Christopher Rodriguez had 206 yards rushing, including three touchdowns. Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak had 294 yards passing, including four touchdowns. Attendance in Lexington: 58,437

Uga took the Blaze out of the Blazers – Georgia 56, UAB 7(Touchdown Tom said: Georgia 26, UAB 10). Georgia’s defense ruled again. The Dawgs held UAB to 174 total yards – just 47 passing yards. UAB’s lone touchdown came with five minutes to go in the game. Meanwhile, Georgia’s offense had 539 total yards. Second-string Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett passed for 288 yards and five touchdowns. Attendance in Athens: 92,746

Cow bells rule! – Mississippi State 24, NC State 10 (Touchdown Tom said: NC State 30, Mississippi State 25). Miss State led 24-3 with a minute to go in the game. Miss State’s defense held NC State to 182 total yards – 42 yards rushing. Miss State only had 24 yards rushing. Bulldogs quarterback Will Rogers passed for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Attendance in Starkville: 45,834

It’s in the book – BYU 26, Utah 17 (Touchdown Tom said: BYU 22, Utah 20). Utah never led in the game. And the Utes were plagued with two turnovers. BYU had 24 first downs to 15 for the Utes. Attendance in Provo: 63,470

Living on the edge – Notre Dame 32, Toledo 29 (Touchdown Tom said: Notre Dame 30, Toledo 21). The game was close throughout. Most of the scoring was done on the fourth quarter – 31 points. Toledo running back Bryant Koback rushed for 122 yards. Toledo receiver Devin Maddox had nine catches for 135 yards. Attendance in South Bend: 62,000

Where’s Davy Crockett when you need him? – Pitt 41, Tennessee 34 (Touchdown Tom said: Pitt 25, Tennessee 23). Tennessee got off to  good start. The Vols led 10-0 after one quarter. Then Pitt erupted for 27 points in the second quarter. The teams were even-steven in the second half – 14 points apiece. Pitt only had 96 yards rushing. But the Panthers had 3-1 yards passing. Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett was 24-of-36 for 285 yards and two touchdowns. Pitt controlled the ball, maintaining possession for 36:05. Attendance in Knoxville: 82,203

In the six games I told you top keep a very close eye on: Oklahoma State had another close call again this week, edging Tulsa, 28-23….  In a defensive struggle, Rutgers downed Syracuse, 17-7….  TCU hung on to beat California, 34-32….  Likewise, Miami (Florida) hung on to edge Appalachian State, 25-23….  Michigan burned Washington, 31-10….  and Stanford surprised USC, 42-28.

YE OLDE STOMPING GROUNDS:

That’s better – West Virginia 66, Long Island 0 (Touchdown Tom said: West Virginia 56, Long Island 9). The competition wasn’t much. But West Virginia needed this game, especially after last week’s disappointing loss to Maryland. And Mountaineer fans finally got to see backup quarterback Garrett Greene. Greene rushed for 98 yards, passing for 67. Starting quarterback Jarret Doege passed for 267 yards and three touchdowns. WVU had 555 total yards to 95 for LIU. LIU had 35 yards rushing and 65 yards passing. Attendance in Morgantown: 50,911

A tale of two Gators – Florida 42, South Florida 20 (Touchdown Tom said: Florida 52, South Florida 9). A sloppy game for Florida, especially in the second half. But I’m sure Florida was cooling its heels for Alabama. Florida racked up 666 total yards. Running and passing quarterbacks Emory Jones and Anthony Richardson were responsible for 499 of those yards. However, Jones looked awful – two interceptions. Jones doesn’t appear to have improved any during the offseason. A friend of mine also said he appears to be slower than last season. Fortunately, Richardson looked good. Florida receiver Jacob Copeland had five receptions for 175 yards. Attendance in Tampa: 64,692

The Huskers roam – Nebraska 28, Buffalo 3 (Touchdown Tom said: Nebraska 28, Buffalo 27). Nebraska systematically took care of Buffalo, scoring all its points in the second and fourth quarters – two touchdowns in each. The Huskers defense looked good. Buffalo does have a respectable offense. Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez passed for 242 yards and rushed for 112 yards. He was responsible for 354 of Nebraska’s 516 total yards. Attendance in Lincoln: 85,663

Duke 45, North Carolina A&T 17 (Touchdown Tom said: Duke 35, North Carolina A&T 26). The Dookies got off to a slow start against A&T. Early in the second quarter, the Dookies trailed A&T, 7-0. Late in the second quarter, the game was tied, 14-14. But the Dookies took a 21-14 halftime lead and never looked back. Blue Devils quarterback Gunnar Holmberg was 20-27-0, passing for 270 yards. The Dookies won big in spite of only maintaining ball possession for 22:19. Attendance in Durham: 18,091

Boilers were huskier – Purdue 49, Connecticut 0 (Touchdown Tom said: Purdue 42, Connecticut 10). As expected, Purdue dominated Connecticut. The Boilers racked up 563 total yards. Purdue’s big quarter was the second when the Boilers scored 28 points. Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer was 16-of-20 for 245 yards and four touchdowns. Purdue receiver David Bell had six receptions for 121 yards. Attendance in East Hartford: 14,187

Week 2 Results:  12 winners, 3 fumbles (80 percent)

For the Season:   21 winners, 10 fumbles (67.7 percent)

Quotes of the Week

“The beautiful thing about both of those schools is I have so much love for both of them. I made great memories at both universities. I have a lot of respect for both coaches and what they do and what they stand for . So I’ve got to say, I’ve got the best of both worlds,” former Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Katy Perry, come back. We will pay for corn dogs,” Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin. (Note: Katy Perry was the celebrity guest picker on ESPN’s “College GameDay” on October 4, 2014, when the show was in Oxford, Mississippi. Ole Miss beat Alabama, 23-17, that day. During her appearance on the show, Perry kept holding up corn dogs.

“All aboard the Lane Train. LFG! Matt Corral for Heisman,” Katy Perry, responding to Lane Kiffin.

“I apologize to our fan base, to our university, to all Seminoles for the performance we had. It was totally unacceptable. I take ownership of it,” Florida State coach Mike Norvell, after FSU’s loss to Jacksonville State.

“We have two really good quarterbacks. We’ll play two every game.” Florida coach Dan Mullen, on Emory Jones and Anthony Richardson.

Touchdown Tom’s Predictions for

This Week’s 10 Biggest and Most Intriguing Games….and then some

GAME OF THE WEEK: 1. Alabama (2-0) at Florida (2-0) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS – This week it’s Florida’s turn to try and beat Alabama. The Gators won’t beat the Tide if Emory Jones plays quarterback. Florida’s only chance of beating Alabama is to play Anthony Richardson at quarterback. At times, Richardson reminds me of Tim Tebow. But even with Richardson, Florida’s chances of winning are few and far between. Still, it should be a good game. Albert gets rinsed in Tide – Alabama 34, Florida 24.

RUNNER-UP: 2. Auburn (2-0) at Penn State (2-0) – (SEC vs. Big Ten) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – First-year Auburn Bryan Harsin coach gets his first test this week. And it’s a tough one. Penn State had its first test and the Lions passed. That was the win over Wisconsin. This will be a test for them too. But an easier test for them than for Auburn. Still, this should be a good game too. The Nitts tax Aubie’s wits – Penn State 24, Auburn 17.

REST OF THE BEST: 3. Arizona State (2-0) at BYU (2-0) – (Pac-12 vs. Inbd.) – 10:15 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – These two teams are good. It’s just a matter of how good. Both have played well, but BYU has the better win – the one over Utah. BYU has the home field too. That will be a challenge for the Sun Devils. This could be a high-scoring game. The Devils find sun in Utah – Arizona State 33, BYU 30.

4. Nevada (2-0) at Kansas State (2-0) – (MWC vs. Big 12) – 2:05 pm ET, Saturday – Nevada was tested at California opening weekend. The Wolf Pack got through that one. Kansas State could be tougher. But Nevada has a good team. Quarterback Carson Strong is a good one. The NFL has their eyes on him. Meanwhile, Kansas State could be a sleeper. The wolf Pack track down a Wildcat – Nevada 27, Kansas State 23.

5. Mississippi State (2-0) at Memphis (2-0) – (SEC vs. AAC) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Memphis had an exhausting game last week, beating Arkansas State, 55-50. The Tigers may be too worn out to keep up with Miss State. The Bulldogs had a good win over NC State. This one could be a wild one – high scoring. Bully prances down Beal Street – Mississippi State 35, Memphis 30.

6. Utah State (2-0) at Air Force (2-0) – (MWC vs. MWC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, FS2 – Utah State wasn’t supposed to be any good this year. Picked to finish last in their division in the MWC. But first-year coach and former Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson has the Aggies playing well – very well. Air Force is no slouch either. Coach Troy Calhoun always fields a competitive team. This game is under the radar, but it should be a good one. The Aggies ground the Fly Boys – Utah State 26, Air Force 19.

7. Purdue (2-0) at Notre Dame (2-0) – (Big Ten vs. Ind.) – 2:30 pm ET, Saturday, NBC – Well, is Notre Dame going to have another close call again this week. Probably not. But the way the Irish have been playing this could be another donnybrook. The Boilers run out of steam – Notre Dame 30, Purdue 27.

8. Virginia (2-0) at North Carolina (1-1) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ACCN – Virginia has played well, but the competition has been iffy. North Carolina stubbed its toe against Virginia Tech. Both quarterbacks are good ones – North Carolina’s Sam Howell and Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong. Tar Heels spike the Wahoos – North Carolina 24, Virginia 21.

9. Nebraska (2-1) at Oklahoma (2-0) – (Big Ten vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FOX – Nebraska comes in on a two-game winning streak. That’s better than a two-game losing streak. But the odds don’t look good for the Huskers. Granted, Oklahoma’s defense looked shaky against Tulane – very shaky. Maybe Adrian Martinez can find a seam. But not likely. The Sooners corn is as high as an elephant’s eye – Oklahoma 35, Nebraska 21.

10. Virginia Tech (2-0) at West Virginia (1-1) – (ACC vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FS1 – Beat Virginia Tech and Mountaineer fans will forget about the opening loss to Maryland. Lose to Virginia Tech and it will be: “When does basketball season start?” How will coach Neal Brown play quarterbacks Jarret Doege and Garrett Greene against the Hokies? WVU’s defense will be tested by Hokie quarterback Braxton Burmeister. Mountaineers stuff the Turkeys – West Virginia 27, Virginia Tech 21.

And keep a very close eye on the following five games:

Cincinnati (2-0) at Indiana (1-1) – (AAC vs. Big Ten) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN;
Coastal Carolina (2-0) at Buffalo (1-1) – (Sun Belt vs. MAC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN2;
Tulane (1-1) at Ole Miss (2-0) – (AAC vs. SEC) – 8 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2;
Oklahoma State (2-0) at Boise State(1-1) – (Big 12 vs. MWC) – 9 pm ET, Saturday, FS1;
Fresno State (1-1) at UCLA (2-0) – (MWC vs. Pac-12) – 10:45 pm ET, Saturday, P12N.

YE OLDE STOMOPING GROUNDS:

Northwestern (1-1) at Duke (1-1) – (Big Ten vs. ACC) – 4 pm ET, Saturday, ACCN – These teams play each other quite a bit and oddly enough the Dookies usually win – even when Northwestern is better. Neither team has played well this year. The Dookies have an interesting quarterback in Gunnar Holmberg. Regardless, this will be a close game – very close. The Wildcats lick their chops – Northwestern 28, Duke 27.

South Carolina (2-0) at Georgia (2-0) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 7 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – Georgia’s defense will look all the better because South Carolina has no offense. The Gamecocks may not score a point. It’s going to be a tough season for the Gamecocks and it doesn’t get any tougher than Georgia. The Dawgs chew the Gamecocks up and spit them out – Georgia 28, South Carolina 10

Rice (0-2) at Texas (1-1) – (C-USA vs. Big 12) – 8 pm ET, Saturday, LHN – Two games into the season and Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is already on the hot seat. You know those Longhorn fans didn’t take that Arkansas loss well. Texas will be mad this week. And that spells trouble for Rice. Not that Rice wasn’t already in trouble. But this could be brutal. Fried Rice – Texas 33, Rice 11.

ELSEWHERE AROUND FLORIDA:

Alabama A&M (1-0) at Bethune-Cookman (0-2) – (SWAC vs. SWAC) – 7:30 pm ET, Thursday, ESPNU….

Michigan State (2-0) at Miami (Florida) (1-1) – (Big Ten vs. ACC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ABC –

Florida State (0-2) at Wake Forest (2-0) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN….

Fordham (0-2) at Florida Atlantic (1-1) – (Patriot League vs. C-USA) – 6 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN3….

West Florida (2-0) at Texas A&M-Commerce (1-1) – (Lone Star vs. Gulf South) – 6 pm ET, Saturday….

UCF (2-0) at Louisville (1-1) – (AAC vs. ACC) – 7:30 pm ET, Friday, ESPN….
