College Football
Week 7 – Dawgs-Tide, 8 pm ET
OU-Texas go to
4OT, LSU loses again, Florida has no defense and the Dookies finally win – Wow,
what a weekend!
Oh, and I almost forgot: Arkansas got screwed, Alabama-Ole Miss put 111 points on the board and Tennessee is not ready for primetime.
Yes, it was some weekend of football. One that many won’t forget for a long time. No sooner had the 12 noon games kicked off and the adventures began. It was like a roller coaster ride – Oklahoma 53, Texas 45 (4OT), Missouri 45, LSU 41 and Texas A&M 41, Florida 38.
Let’s begin. Going into Saturday’s game, the Red River Showdown wasn’t considered to be a marquee event this year. After all, Texas at 2-1 was ranked no higher than 22nd and Oklahoma at 1-2 wasn’t even ranked in the Top 25.
Well, it might not have been a marquee event, but it turned out to be a marquee game – a four overtime marquee game. Oklahoma took the early lead in the game, but by halftime Texas tied the score, 17-17. Then the Sooners took a two-touchdown lead in the third quarter. As the fourth quarter began, Oklahoma led 31-17. In the final 15 minutes, Texas scored two unanswered touchdowns. The second of the two touchdowns came with 0:14 left on the clock. At the end of regulation, Oklahoma and Texas were tied 31-31.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the first two overtimes. After two OTs, the score was 45-45. Ironically, in the third overtime, neither team scored. In the fourth overtime, Oklahoma scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Rattler to Drake Stoops (Bob’s son) and was successful on its required two-point conversion. Then it all came to an end for Texas. Oklahoma’s Tre Brown intercepted Sam Ehlinger’s pass in the end zone. Game over. Oklahoma beat Texas 53-45 to win its third-straight game over the Longhorns.
Although Texas leads the series 62-49-5, Oklahoma has won nine of the last 12 meetings between the schools.
Perhaps the biggest stunner of the day occurred in a second 12 noon start. This one in Columbia, Missouri. LSU was a heavy favorite to beat Missouri. But someone forgot to tell the Show Me Boys. Missouri racked up 586 total yards on LSU, on its way to an upset of the Cajun Tigers.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied, 14-14. At halftime, the score was tied, 24-24. At the end of three, LSU lead, 41-38. At the end of four, Missouri knocked off LSU, 45-41. Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak was 29-for-34, passing for 406 yards and four touchdowns.
Amazingly, in the closing seconds of the game, LSU had a first-and-goal on the Missouri 1. After two failed rushing attempts and two incomplete passes, the ball was turned back over on downs to Missouri with 16 seconds left. Another amazing thing – Missouri had three turnovers to none for LSU. And another amazing thing – LSU only had 49 rushing yards.
The defending national champions are 1-2.
In a third 12 noon start, Florida and Texas A&M put on quite a show in College Station. In a game that was tied no less than four times, Texas A&M took its first lead in the contest early in the fourth quarter. The Aggies went up 31-28.
Six minutes later, with 6:14 to go in the game, Florida was leading 38-31. With 4:30 to go in the game, Texas A&M scored a tying touchdown – 38-38. Then, as time expired, the Aggies Seth Small kicked a 26-yard field goal. Texas A&M upset Florida, 41-38.
Florida is 1-8 against Jimbo Fisher.
Well, the fun, the excitement, and yes, the controversy didn’t stop with 12 noon games on Saturday. It continued all day and into the night.
Duke came into its game against Syracuse with an 0-4 record. The Dookies also came into the game averaging four turnovers a game. And guess what? Duke had four turnovers in the game against Syracuse. But guess what? The Dookies won their first game, beating Syracuse, 38-24.
In spite of four turnovers, Duke had 645 total yards against Syracuse. Two Duke running backs had 332 rushing yards between them – Deon Jackson rushed for 169 yards and Mataeo Durant rushed for 163 yards.
The Dookies are 1-4
There was a big game in Athens, Georgia. Well, it was supposed to be a big game. Tennessee, after years of disappointing seasons, had the opportunity to prove itself against Georgia. Under third-year coach Jeremy Pruitt, the Vols were off to a 2-0 start this season. Expectations were high.
Those expectations remained high throughout the first half. Tennessee led Georgia at the break, 21-17. But it all came crumbling down in the second half. The Dawgs outscored the Vols 27-0. When it was over, Tennessee had all of -1 yard rushing. When it was over, Georgia won 44-21.
Tennessee is not ready for primetime.
Who would have thought somebody was going to put 48 points on Alabama? Well, think it. Ole Miss did. Alabama and Ole Miss put on quite a show Saturday night – very entertaining.
The score was tied no less than six times. The last time early in the fourth quarter at 42-42. Shortly afterward, when Alabama went ahead 49-42, the game was never tied again. Ole Miss countered with a field goal. Alabama countered with another touchdown. Ultimately, the Tide beat Ole Miss, 63-48.
The teams combined for 1,370 total yards and 68 first downs. Ole Miss put up 647 total yards on the Alabama defense.
Sounds like the SEC has become the Big 12 or the Pac-12.
And we couldn’t get through the day without some controversy. Saturday night, Auburn beat Arkansas, 30-28. But actually, according to the rules of the game, Arkansas beat Auburn 28-27.
Trailing Auburn, 27-18 in the fourth quarter, Arkansas rallied from nine points down to take a 28-27 lead over the Tigers with 5:29 to go in the game. In the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, Auburn was still trailing Arkansas, 28-27. The Tigers had the ball in Arkansas territory and well within field goal range for Auburn.
Killing time and trying to set up field position for the field goal, Auburn quarterback Bo Nix muffed the snap from center, dropping the ball on the field. He then picked up the football and spiked it to stop the clock. But instead of spiking it forward (in front of him) he spiked it backward (behind him).
So instead of the equivalent of an incomplete forward pass, it was an incomplete backward pass. It was a fumble. It was Arkansas’ ball. Well, it should have been. But the referees didn’t rule it a fumble. And with 0:07 left on the clock, Auburn’s Anders Carlson kicked a 39-yard field goal. Auburn won, but really didn’t win, 30-28.
Following the game, the refs were trashed on social media.
Week 6 got underway Thursday evening. In spite of five turnovers, Houston beat Tulane, 49-31. Tulane played like it did against Navy a few weeks ago. Almost midway through the second quarter, the Green Wave led Houston, 24-7. During the remainder of the game, Houston outscored Tulane, 42-7. Against Navy, Tulane led at halftime, 24-0. The Green Wave lost to Navy, 27-24. Obviously, Tulane is not a second-half team.
Friday night, Georgia Tech outscored Louisville 32-6 in the second half and beat the Cardinals, 46-27. Louisville led at halftime, 21-14. Ironically, Louisville dominated time of possession for more than 36 minutes.
Two North Carolina teams had a big day on Saturday, First the Tar Heels outlasted Virginia Tech. North Carolina beat the Hokies, 56-45. North Carolina improved to 3-0. Virginia Tech suffered its first loss. Then, NC State, who came alive last week against Pitt, continued its winning ways. The Wolfpack downed Virginia, 38-21. NC State improved to 3-1.
Also in the ACC, Pitt suffered its second-straight loss. Boston College downed the Panthers, 31-30 (OT). Trailing Boston College 24-21, Pitt’s Alex Kessman kicked a 58-yard field goal with 40 seconds left in the game. That put the game into overtime, where BC won.
In the Big 12, Kansas State remained unbeaten in conference play. The Wildcats downed TCU, 21-14. Then Iowa State humbled Texas Tech, 31-15. Early in the fourth quarter the Cyclones led the Red Raiders, 31-7. Iowa State had 516 total yards. Brock Purdy was 32-for-43, passing for 302 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Breece Hall had 135 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Texas Tech only had 58 yards rushing.
Back in the ACC, Clemson rules. The Tigers roughed up Miami, 42-17. Clemson totally controlled the game. Up in South Bend, Notre Dame took care of Florida State, 42-26. FSU actually led Notre Dame at the end of the first quarter, 17-14. Then the Irish outscored the Noles 28-9 after that.
What happened to “Air Raid?” Kentucky kept “Air Raid” scoreless, as the Wildcats beat Mississippi State, 24-2. In a flat game, Kentucky only had 157 total yards – 84 rushing and 73 passing. Miss State only had 21 rushing yards. Miss State also threw six interceptions.
In C-USA, Marshall downed Western Kentucky, 38-14, and Louisiana Tech beat UTEP, 21-17. Marshall (3-0) and Louisiana Tech (3-1) collide this week.
Two defensive coordinators were crucified on social media Saturday. After Florida lost to Texas A&M, Gator fans trashed Todd Grantham on social media, calling for Dan Mullen to fire Grantham. After LSU lost to Missouri, Tiger fans trashed Bo Pelini on social media, calling for Ed Orgeron to fire Pelini.
Week 6 Winners: Missouri quarterback Connor Bazelak, Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz, North Carolina running back Michael Carter, Alabama running back Najee Harris and Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond. Week 6 Losers: Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini.
Florida quarterback Kyle Trask did something Saturday that caught my attention. He did it four times. Trask, when he had a receiver who was wide open with nothing but paydirt ahead of him, instead threw into coverage – double coverage three times and triple coverage once.
During Florida’s first two drives in the first quarter, Trask threw into double coverage twice on the first drive and once on the second drive. All three passes were broken up by defenders and ended in incompletions. On all three passes, he clearly had a wide-open receiver.
Then, early in the second half, Trask threw into triple coverage. On this play the ball was intercepted by a defender. However, the interception was nullified because of an unnecessary roughness penalty on Texas A&M. And on this play, like the others, he clearly had a wide-open receiver.
But that is minor compared to Florida’s defense. The Gators defense has given up 1,485 yards in three games. That’s 495 yards per game.
Of the three teams – Florida, Kentucky and Alabama – who have played Ole Miss, Kentucky has had the best defense against the Magnolia Boys. Alabama gave up 647 yards to Ole Miss and Florida gave up 613 yards. Kentucky’s defense only gave up 459 yards to Ole Miss, and that included an overtime.
Last week, we lost two more personalities from the music scene – Eddie Van Halen and Johnny Nash. Van Halen was the Dutch-born, legendary guitarist and leader of the band Van Halen. Sixteen songs from Van Halen made Billboard’s Top 40 between 1978 and 1993. Among the band’s biggest hits were “Jump,” “Dance The Night Away,” “I’ll Wait,” “Panama,” “Why Can’t This Be Love,” “When Is Love” and “Finish What You Started.” “Jump” went all the way to No. 1 on the charts in the winter/spring of 1984. Eddie Van Halen was 65.
Nash was an American singer-songwriter, primarily of reggae and pop music. A native of Houston, Texas, six of Nash’s recordings made the Billboard Top 40. Among his biggest hits were “I Can See Clearly Now,” “Hold Me Tight: and “Stir It Up.” “I Can See Clearly Now” went all the way to No. 1 on the charts in the fall of 1972. Johnny Nash was 80.
Yet another former Major League Baseball player died last week – Whitey Ford. Nicknamed “The Chairman of the Board,” Ford was a pitcher who played his entire 16-year MLB career with the New York Yankees. He was a 10-time All-Star and a six-time World Series champion. Ford played his first season with the Yankees in 1950. But the next two years, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Ford returned to the Yankees for the 1953 season and pitched every year until he retired after the 1967 season. Edward Charles “Whitey” Ford was 91.
Do they play defense anymore in the SEC?.... Mississippi State is 1-2. It’s one win is over LSU. Missouri is 1-2. It’s one win is over LSU…. Latest rumor? Urban Meyer to Texas…. Have a fun week!

Quotes of the Week
“I think they have the best player in America. He’s a matchup nightmare. He can play attached and block, flex out and create mismatches. You can move him around all over the field,” Urban Meyer, on Florida tight end/receiver Kyle Pitts.
“The scoreboard in the end will not reflect it nor will our record. But Razorback football were winners on Pat Dye Field tonight. I am so proud of everyone associated with this program. This is just the beginning,” Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek, following the Auburn-Arkansas game.
“I’m not really calm. We didn’t do anything well. We didn’t stop the run. We gave up some plays in the backend. We’ve never played this way on defense. It’s certainly not what we aspire to be as a defensive team, and we’re gonna work hard with our players,” Alabama coach Nick Saban, after giving up 48 points to Ole Miss.
“We’re going to have to check some of our group and figure out who really wants to play here. Because, any malcontents, we’re going to have to purge a couple of those,” Mississippi State coach Mike Leach after the 24-2 loss to Kentucky.
Tweets of the Week
(First against Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham)
“In year three of Dan Mullen, the offense is playing at an elite level and the defense has gotten worse and is abysmal this year. They’ve recruited really well on defense and yet they keep getting worse. Grantham isn’t the answer.”
“So again Grantham’s defense is 0-for-4 on third down.”
“When our offense scores but then I realize I have to watch Grantham’s defense.”
“I would straight up fire Grantham after this game.”
(Then against the refs in the Arkansas-Auburn game)
“Shouldn’t this be considered a fumble? He muffs the snap and tries to clock it but throws it backwards. That should be a fumble.
“SEC officiating is still god awful. Figure it out.”
“I don’t understand how that is not a fumble for Auburn.”
“Wow! I mean, I’ve seen some bad officiating before. But that’s a total screw job.”
“If the SEC is going to screw a team over, they will always make sure it is Arkansas.”
“Pretty bad call by the refs not ruling that an Auburn fumble.”
“That was a fumble by Bo Nix. Again, Auburn gets bailed out.”
“SEC refs get Arkansas again. Give Auburn the football game.”

Predictions for
GAME OF THE DAY: 1. Georgia (3-0) at Alabama (3-0) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 8 pm ET, Saturday, CBS – So this could be a prelim to the SEC championship game. Georgia’s defense is playing better than Alabama’s defense. Conversely, Alabama’s offense is playing better than Georgia’s offense. That should make for an interesting time. But Bama’s defense better get its act together. They do – Alabama 28, Georgia 20.
RUNNER-UP: 2. Coastal Carolina (3-0) at Louisiana (3-0) – (Sun Belt vs. Sun Belt) – 7 pm ET, Wednesday, ESPN – This game was originally scheduled to be played last week. It was postponed to this week due to COVID. Both of these teams opened their seasons with a win over a Big 12 team. And they have been winning since. But Louisiana has been barely winning, while Coastal Carolina has been coasting. There will be no chicken in this gumbo – Coastal Carolina 30, Louisiana 29.
REST OF THE BEST: 3. Pitt (3-2) at Miami (Florida) (3-1) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ACCN – Both teams lost last week. Miami’s was expected. Pitt’s was 50/50. Miami’s defense is better than Pitt’s. Unless, Miami’s defense is wiped out after the Clemson loss. The Canes are comfortable at home – Miami 30, Pitt 19.
4. Boston College (3-1) at Virginia Tech (2-1) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 8 pm ET, Saturday, ACCN – Both teams lost last week, but Virginia Tech played the tougher team. It won’t get much easier this week. The Hokies can run. The Eagles can pass. Run wins – Virginia Tech 29, Boston College 20.
5. Oklahoma State (3-0) at Baylor (1-1) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Okie State is the only undefeated team in the Big 12 and one of three Big 12 teams undefeated in conference play. Baylor won’t be easy, but the Cowboys remain undefeated – Oklahoma State 29, Baylor 24.
6. BYU (4-0) at Houston (1-0) – (Ind. vs. AAC) – 9:30 pm ET, Friday, ESPN – Houston finally got to play a game last week. The Cougars looked pretty good. BYU will have its work cut out for itself. They are the Cougars too. Close, maybe high-scoring game. The Mormon Cougars win – BYU 30, Houston 27.
7. Cincinnati (3-0) at Tulsa (1-1) – (AAC vs. AAC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Tulsa has the one big win over UCF and the one tough loss to Oklahoma State. Cincinnati is really kind of untested. This will be a test for both teams. The Bearcats run on high test – Cincinnati 22, Tulsa 17.
8. Marshall (3-0) at Louisiana Tech (3-1) – (C-USA vs. C-USA) – 6 pm ET, Saturday, CBSSN – Big game in C-USA. These two could meet again for the conference championship. Marshall has the stronger offense. The Bulldogs get Buffed – Marshall 24, Louisiana Tech 19.
9. UCF (2-1) at Memphis (1-1) – (AAC vs. AAC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Good contest in the AAC. SMU made Memphis look vulnerable and Tulsa made UCF look vulnerable. UCF looks vulnerable again – Memphis 32, UCF 26.
10. LSU (1-2) at Florida (2-1) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – Will Florida ever find a defense? LSU’s offense should have a heyday. Florida needs to get a running game going. Dan Mullen wants The Swamp filled. Will Kent Fuchs grant Mullen his wish? Tigers make good Gator bait – Florida 37, LSU 33.
YE OLDE STOMPING
GROUNDS:
Kansas (0-3) at West Virginia (2-1) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FOX – I think every coach hates to play Kansas. It’s got to be hard to get your team up for them. Sorry Jayhawks, but you aren’t in Kansas anymore – West Virginia 34, Kansas 15.
Duke (1-4) at NC State (3-1) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ACCN – The Dookies found out last week that they can fumble and still win – four times a game. I don’t think that strategy will work against the Wolfpack. The Dookies are better than you think. But so are the Wolfies – NC State 28, Duke 25.
