CFW Week 10 Forecast - Vanderbilt-Texas; Oklahoma-Tennessee

 CFW Week 10 Forecast – Vanderbilt-Texas; Oklahoma-Tennessee

Coaching carousel has 12 openings,

and the season is not yet over

It’s still October and already 12 schools have fired their coaches. I don’t remember a year with this many firings at only nine weeks into the season.

Once the season began, the first two terminations – UCLA’s DeShaun Foster and Virginia Tech’s Brent Pry – occurred on September 14. That was just three weeks into the season. The most recent termination occurred last Sunday – LSU’s Brian Kelly.

The first two firings actually occurred long before the season began. Stanford fired Troy Taylor in late March and Kent State fired Kenni Burns in mid-April. Both Stanford and Kent State named interim coaches for the 2025 season. Stanford’s interim coach – Frank Reich – will step down at the end of the season. The Cardinal are on a search for a full-time coach to be named at the end of the season.

Kent State named Mike Carney its interim coach. Unlike Reich, Carney has the opportunity to be named the full-time coach at the end of the season. I’d say he has a good chance since Kent State at 3-5 has already won 3 more games than the Golden Flashes did all of last year.

Of the 12 openings, eight are at Power Four schools and four are at Group of Five Schools. The Power Four schools are UCLA, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Penn State, Florida and LSU. Those are all prime jobs at prime football schools. They will draw some prime coaches.

Names already being bandied about are Oregon’s Dan Lanning, Nebraska’s Matt Rhule, Indiana’s Curt Cignetti, Ole Miss’s Lane Kiffin, Tulane’s Jon Sumrall, South Florida’s Alex Golesh, Georgia Tech’s Brent Key, Louisville’s Jeff Brohm, Duke’s Manny Diaz, SMU’s Rhett Lashlee, Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman, Missouri’s Eliah Drinkwitz, Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea and Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham.

Even fired Penn State coach James Franklin has been mentioned. Even retired coaches Nick Saban and Urban Meyer. You just know the agents are chomping at the bit. They are wired. The fun has begun.

I suspect there will be some more prime jobs opening up – maybe Wisconsin, Florida State, Auburn?

The four Group of Five schools looking for coaches are Kent State, Oregon State, UAB and Colorado State. They will draw some hot, up-and-coming coaches who will use those schools to hopefully springboard to a prime football school. I’m sure by the end of the season, there will be more openings at other Group of Five schools.

So, who will be the new coach at Penn State? Who will be the new coach at Florida? At LSU? Stay tuned!

There are three marquee games this week – two in the SEC and one in the Big 12. A third SEC game is a marquee rivalry.

Beginning in the SEC, how about Vanderbilt (7-1) at Texas (6-2). And the big question is the status of Arch Manning. Will he or won’t he play? Manning is currently in concussion protocol. If he doesn’t play, Manning’s replacement is Matthew Caldwell. Should Vandy win this game, I’ll pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.

The other marquee game in the SEC is Oklahoma (6-2) at Tennessee (6-2). This is a key game for both teams. A loss could make it difficult for the loser to make the CFP. Tennessee is coming in off a big win. Oklahoma comes in off a big loss. The marquee rivalry is the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party – Georgia (7-1) vs. Florida (3-4). This will be Florida’s first game under its interim coach – Billy Gonzalez. The Gators have lost four-straight to Georgia. Florida last beat Georgia in 2020.

The third marquee game of the week takes place in the Big 12 – Cincinnati (7-1) at Utah (6-2). I’m thinking this is going to be some kind of exciting game. Cincy quarterback Brendan Sorsby creates excitement on the field. Last week, Utah backup quarterback Byrd Ficklin couldn’t do anything wrong. But will Ficklin or quarterback Devon Dampier play?

The other big game in the Big 12 is Arizona State (5-3) at Iowa State (5-3). After starting out 5-0, Iowa Stte has lost its last three games. Two of them were close losses – each by a touchdown. You never know which Arizona State team will show up. But when the good one does, the Sun Devils are tough.

The best game in the Big Ten is USC (5-2) at Nebraska (6-2). Can Nebraska’s defense stop USC’s offense? Likewise, can USC’s defense stop Nebraska’s offense? The other interesting game in the Big Ten is Indiana (8-0) at Maryland (4-3). Can anyone stop the Hoosiers? Indiana could be prime for an upset. Is Maryland capable?

That brings us to the ACC where two games could stir things up. First, we are looking a Virginia (7-1) at California (5-3). Virginia should have gotten a wake up call last week – a one-point overtime win over North Carolina. If that didn’t wake up the Cavaliers, Cal will jump all over them. Then there is 10th-ranked Miami (6-1) at SMU (5-3). SMU got its wake up call last week. The Mustangs lost by one point to Wake Forest. The Mustangs had Miami on their minds. This week, Miami is on the Mustang’s field.

And finally, we wind up with a key American Conference game that could be a doozy – Navy (7-0) at North Texas (7-1)Blake Horvath vs. Drew Mestemaker. Last week, Horvath ran for 176 yards. Last week Mestemaker passed for 608 yards. Both teams are still in contention to be the Group of Five team in the CFP.

Three other games I am interested and curious to see how they play out are Penn State (3-4) at Ohio State (7-0). Oh, we know Ohio State will win. Just curious to see how Penn State performs under interim coach Terry SmithTexas Tech (7-1) at Kansas State (4-4). Texas Tech is down to its third-string quarterback. First-string quarterback Behren Morton is out temporarily with an ankle injury. Second-string quarterback Will Hammond is out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Kansas State is a much improved team – getting better and better. Georgia Tech (8-0) at NC State (4-4). Georgia Tech is ripe for an upset and NC State is just the team to pull it off. The Yellow Jackets better beware.

College Football Week 10 began Tuesday night with two games. Kennesaw State had a big first quarter and a big fourth quarter to beat UTEP, 33-20. Kennesaw State outscored UTEP 14-0 in the first quarter and 10-0 in the fourth quarter. In the second game, James Madison walloped Texas State, 52-20. JMU quarterback Alonza Barnett passed for 264 yards and four touchdowns. Barnett ran for 98 yards and another touchdown. JMU racked up 511 total yards.

Week 10 continued last night with two more games. Jacksonville State scored 17 points in the fourth quarter and held on to beat Middle Tennessee, 24-21. In the other game, Missouri State downed FIU, 28-21.

ESPN’s College GameDay will be in Salt Lake City for the Cincinnati-Utah game. FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff will be in Columbus for the Penn State-Ohio State game. SEC Network’s SEC Nation will be in Austin for the Vanderbilt-Texas game. The ACC Network’s ACC Huddle will be in Berkeley for the Virginia-California game.

The Top-5 teams in this week’s FCS Coaches Poll are 1. North Dakota State (8-0), 2. Tarleton State (9-0), 3. Montana (8-0), 4. Montana State (6-2), and South Dakota State (7-1). Lehigh (8-0) is 7th, Harvard (6-0) is 15th and Presbyterian (7-1) is 22nd. (Note: I list Lehigh, Harvard and Presbyterian because they are non-athletic scholarship FCS programs.)

Touchdown Tom’s Predictions for

Week Ten’s 10 Biggest and Most Intriguing Games….and then some

GAME OF THE WEEK: 1. #9 Vanderbilt (7-1) at #20 Texas (6-2) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ABC – Texas quarterback Arch Manning  in concussion protocol. He may not play. The backup quarterback is Matthew Caldwell. Caldwell is a senior transfer from Troy. Vandy quarterback Diego Pavia will be playing. I suspect he will be playing inspired football. Pavia has passed for 1,628 yards. He has run for his share of yards too. Vandy is averaging 38 points a game on offense. Texas is holding opponents to 15 points a game on defense. Let the battle begin. Two weeks in a row I have picked Vandy to lose. They won both times. The third time has to be a charm – Texas 27, Vanderbilt 24.

RUNNER-UP: 2. #18 Oklahoma (6-2) at #14 Tennessee (6-2) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Oklahoma may have seen its better days this season. It may only get worse from here  on out. Actually, from last week when the Sooners fell to Ole Miss. Tennessee could be on the up-and-up for the rest of the season. The upward trend began last week with the win over Kentucky. Both teams have good quarterbacks. Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar is doing better with 2,344 yards passing. The Vols definitely have the better offense, averaging 46 points a game. OU appears to have the better defense, holding opponents to 13 points a game. But Tennessee’s offense will penetrate the OU defense. It’s looking gloomier for Boomer – Tennessee 34, Oklahoma 31.

REST OF THE BEST: 3. #17 Cincinnati (7-1) at #24 Utah (6-2) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 10:15 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – Both Cincy and Utah are talented on offense. Both are decent on defense. Utah may be a little better. Cincy quarterback Brendan Sorsby has passed for 1,843 yards. Utah keeps coming up with good quarterbacks. Last week it was Byrd Ficklin. Ficklin replaced the injured Devon Dampier. Last week, Ficklin literally passed and ran up and down the field. Both teams are averaging 38-39 points a game. This one could be a high-scoring affair. The Utes will score more – Utah 30, Cincinnati 28.

4. #23 USC (5-2) at Nebraska (6-2) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, NBC – These teams are similar on offense and defense. Nebraska is the better running team with Emmett Johnson. Johnson has rushed for 837 yards. USC relies more on its passing attack. Trojans quarterback Jayden Maiava has passed for 2,180 yards. The touchdowns and field goals may be frequent in this game. A little more frequent for the Trojans – USC 30, Nebraska 28.

5. #2 Indiana (8-0) at Maryland (4-3) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS – If Indiana keeps playing the way the Hoosiers have been, then they will have no trouble against Maryland. But every good team has an off day. Should the Hoosiers have an off day, Maryland is capable of upsetting them. Of the two teams, Indiana is much better on offense and defense. The Hoosiers average 45 points a game and only give up 11 points a game. The strong offense is due to the passing of Fernando Mendoza. He has passed for 1,923 yards. Maryland passes well, but the Terps have no running game. Indiana adds to Maryland’s three-game losing streak. The Hoosiers buffalo the Terps – Indiana 31, Maryland 20.

6. #15 Viginia (7-1) at California (5-3) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 3:45 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – The Cavaliers better hope that last week’s overtime win over North Carolina was a wakeup call for them. If it wasn’t, then Cal is likely to upset them. Virginia scores more than Cal – 37 points a game to 25 points a game. Both are similar on defense, holding opponents to 23 points a game. Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris has passed for 1,807 yards. Cal quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has passed for 1,982 yards. Cal definitely plays better at home than on the road. There could be an upset looming. But not this week – Virginia 30, California 24.

7. #10 Miami (6-1) at SMU (5-3) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN – SMU was upset by Wake Forest last week. No doubt the Mustangs were looking ahead to this game. Miami could be on the upset end of things this week. SMU is capable. Both teams are averaging 32-33 points a game. Miami is a little better on defense. SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings has passed for 2,119 yards. Miami quarterback Carson Beck has passed for 1,673 yards. The SMU defenders will be out to sack and intercept Beck. They will be blown over by the Canes – Miami 28, SMU 24.

8. #26 Navy (7-0) at #34 North Texas (7-1) – (AC vs. AC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Of all the games this week, this one could end up being the highest-scoring game of the week. North Texas averages 46 points a game. Navy averages 37. Both defenses give up 24 points a game. Navy quarterback Blake Horvath runs and passes. He has rushed for 814 yards and passed for 1,063 yards. But the one to watch out for is North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker. Last week, he passed for 608 yards. He’s passed for 2,468 yards this season. Mestemaker may be the Navy’s demise. But the Middies swab the Mena Green off the field –  Navy 35, North Texas 34.

9. Arizona State (5-3) at Iowa State (5-3) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 1 pm ET, Saturday, TNT – Iowa State is on a three-game losing streak. It’s about time the Cyclones pop up and beat somebody. They are too good a team to be losing all these games. Arizona State looks like the prime suspect to end Iowa State’s losing streak. The Sun Devils have been an up-and-down team. Both ASI and ISU are similar teams. Both average around 27 points a game. Both defenses give up about 23 points a game. Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht has passed for 1,933 yards. ASU quarterback Sam Leavitt has passed for 1,628 yards. Leavitt has suffered some injuries, and it looks like he will miss this game. No sun for the Devils – Iowa State 27, Arizona State 23.

10. #5 Georgia (6-1) vs. Florida (3-4) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – Ah, the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. What would it be without a Florida-Georgia game? There’s no doubt who should and probably will win. But the Gators will be fired up, playing under interim coach Billy Gonzales. Florida went from one Billy to another. Ever noticed how fired up teams seem to play under an interim coach – especially in the first game after the full-time coach has been fired. The defenses of the two teams are similar. Both are giving up 20 points a game. Georgia is considerably better on offense. Florida quarterback D.J. Lagway has been a disappointment. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton has been okay – not great, but okay. Both QBs have passed 1,500-plus yards. The Bark Boys extend their winning streak. – Georgia 27, Florida 21.

YE OLDE STOMPING GROUNDS:

West Virginia (2-6) at #22 Houston (7-1) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FS1 – West Virginia was a surprise last week. After getting blown out in four Big 12 games, the Mounties lost to TCU by only 6 points – 23-17. Something was amiss. It doesn’t look good for WVU this week. Houston is on a three-game winning streak. The Cougars have been playing well. West Virginia’s offense is only averaging 21 points a game. And the WVU defense is giving up 30 points a game. With numbers like that, you simply don’t win. Houston doesn’t have a problem – Houston 30, West Virginia 20.

Duke (4-3) at Clemson (3-4) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ACCN –  Duke has the quarterback and the numbers to beat Clemson. Darian Mensah has passed for 2,211 yards. And the Dookies are averaging 34 points a game. Clemson only musters 26 points. The Tigers have more talent than Duke. They just haven’t played well as a team. But when they do, they are good. I don’t think Dabo Swinney would survive a home loss to Duke. That would be more than the Tiger fans could handle. Swinney survives – Clemson 27, Duke 24.

Purdue (2-6) at #21 Michigan (6-2) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 7 pm ET, Saturday, BTN – Purdue almost pulled it out last week. They almost won their first big Ten game. Rutgers had to rally late to beat the Boilers. Michigan won’t have to rally late, but the Boilers could give the Wolverines a battle. Purdue quarterback Ryne Browne has passed for 1,689 yards. But he can be careless with his passes. Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood has been getting better and better each week. He has passed for 1,526 yards. More dangerous for Michigan is running back Justice Haynes. He has rushed for 857 yards. Neither team is averaging a lot of points per game. But the Wolverines have a much better defense – giving up 17 points a game. The Boilers fizzle – Michigan 28, Purdue 20.

ELSEWHERE AROUND FLORIDA:

FIU (3-4) at Missouri State (4-3) – (C-USA vs. C-USA) – 8 pm ET, Wednesday, CBSSN….

UCF (4-3) at Baylor (4-4) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPNU….

Mississippi Valley State (1-6) at Bethune-Cookman (4-4) – (SWAC vs. SWAC) – 3 pm ET, Saturday….

West Florida (8-0) at Delta State (7-1) – (Gulf South vs. Gulf South) – 4 pm ET, Saturday….

Jackson State (5-2) at Florida A&M (3-4) – (SWAC vs. SWAC) – 7 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN+….

Wake Forest (5-2) at Florida State (3-4) – (ACC vs. ACC) – 7:30 pm ET, ACCN….

Quotes of the Week

“What if Texas is better with Matthew Caldwell, not Arch Manning, at quarterback,” USA Today sports writer Matt Hayes, posing speculation if Manning doesn’t play this weekend.

“I’ve never made a decision based on money, nor will I. I’ve seen too many examples in life where money does not buy happiness. Jimmy Sexton (Kiffin’s agent) gets really mad when I say that,” Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin.

“No. I can tell you right now Scott Woodward will not be selecting the next coach. Hell, I’d let Donald Trump select the coach before I’d let Woodward do it,” Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, when asked at a press conference if LSU athletic director Scott Woodward would be picking the next LSU football coach.

CFW Week 9 Results - LSU fires Brian Kelly

CFW Week 9 Results – LSU fires Brian Kelly

A day of emotional highs and lows

Fans were taken on a roller coaster ride. The ups and downs were incredible.

In Columbia, South Carolina, Gamecock fans were ready to rush the field. There were less than 3 minutes remaining in the game. South Carolina, a 13-point underdog, led Alabama, 22-14. But with 2:16 on the clock, Alabama scored on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Ty Simpson to Germie Bernard. The Tide went for two and converted. Score tied, 22-22. Then, following a fumble by South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers and with only 34 seconds remaining, Alabama scored on a 25-yard touchdown run by Germie Bernard. Just like that, the emotions of South Carolina fans went from an ultimate high to an ultimate low. Alabama beat South Carolina 29-22.

In Starkville, Mississippi, Bulldog fans were ready to rush the field. There were less than 2 minutes remaining in the game. Miss State, a 9-point underdog, led Texas, 38-31. But with 1:47 on the clock, Texas scored a touchdown on a 79-yard punt return by Ryan Niblett. The extra point kick was good. Score tied, 38-38. In overtime, Texas scored a touchdown and Miss State failed to score. Texas beat Mississippi State, 45-38 (OT). The emotions of Bulldog fans went from an ultimate high to an ultimate low.

In Nashville, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Missouri were tied 10-10 with less than 2 minutes remaining on the clock. At the 1:52 mark, Vanderbilt scored on a one-yard touchdown run by Diego Pavia. Vandy held on to beat Missouri, 17-10. After beating LSU last week, the emotions of Commodore fans remain on a high.

In West Lafayette, Indiana, Purdue and Rutgers were both looking for their first win in Big Ten play this season. Both were 0-4. With less than 5 minutes remaining in the game, Purdue led Rutgers, 24-21. At the 1:06 mark, Rutgers kicked a field goal. The game was tied 24-24. On the ensuing series, Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne fumbled with 59 seconds on the clock. Rutgers kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired to beat Purdue, 27-24. Rutgers ended on a high. Purdue ended on a low.

In Lincoln, Nebraska, Northwestern and Nebraska were tied 21-21 throughout most of the fourth quarter. Nebraska had blown a 21-6 lead over Northwestern. Late in the fourth quarter, Nebraska went on a grinding drive. The Huskers scored a touchdown on a 4-yard run by Emmett Johnson, with 2:44 remaining in the game. Nebraska held on to beat Northwestern, 28-21. From last week’s low after losing to Minnesota, the Huskers are back on a high this week. Northwestern went from the high of a 4-game winning streak to the low of the loss to Nebraska.

In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Virginia and North Carolina were tied 10-10 at halftime. North Carolina was looking for its first win in ACC play, and its first win over a Power Four Team. At the end of regulation, the two teams were still tied 10-10. In overtime, Virginia scored a touchdown and went up 17-10. Then, North Carolina scored a touchdown. The Tar Heels went for two and came up short – just short of the goal line. Virginia beat North Carolina 17-16 (OT). Virginia remains on an emotional Top-25 ranking high. Meanwhile, North Carolina’s emotional low continues.

In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, SMU scored a touchdown with 2:58 remaining in the game to take a 12-10 lead over Wake Forest. It was SMU’s first lead in the game. However, as time expired, Wake Forest kicker Connor Calvert kicked a 50-yard field goal. Wake Forest upset SMU, 13-12. Needless to say, Wake Forest fans were on a high. SMU fans were on a low.

Yes, the fans were taken on a roller coaster ride.

There were other emotional extremes on Saturday. The games that weren’t close. The games that were blowouts, leaving one team on an emotional high and the other on an emotional low. In the SEC, Texas A&M humiliated LSU, 49-25, while Tennessee embarrassed Kentucky, 56-34. Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar passed for 396 yards and three touchdowns.

In the Big Ten, Indiana pulverized UCLA, 56-6, while Iowa bombed Minnesota, 41-3. UCLA’s three-game winning streak ended abruptly. Before the game, UCLA officials were seriously thinking about making interim coach Tim Skipper the full-time coach. After the game, UCLA officials were having second thoughts about Skipper.

In the ACC, Pitt demolished NC State, 53-34, while Georgia Tech stung Syracuse, 41-16. Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel passed for 423 yards and three touchdowns.

And finally in the Big 12, Utah blew out Colorado, 53-7, while Kansas State pelted Kansas, 42-17. Utah backup quarterback Byrd Ficklin passed for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Ficklin also ran for 151 yards, scoring another touchdown. Utah running back Wayshawn Parker ran for 145 yards. Utah had 422 rushing yards in the game.

It was a day of emotional highs and lows.

College Football Week 9 resumed Thursday night in Atlanta. South Alabama outscored Georgia State, 38-31. When the fourth quarter began, South Alabama led Georgia State, 28-17. But in the first 6 minutes of the fourth quarter, Georgia State scored 14 points to go up 31-28. However, in the final 6 minutes of the fourth quarter, South Alabama rallied. The Jaguars scored 10 points to win. The teams combined for 908 total yards.

Three games were on the docket Friday night. North Texas blasted Charlotte,  E-20. North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker passed for an amazing 608 yards. The teams combined for 1,153 total yards. The Mean Green had 754 of those yards. Then in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech squeezed by California in two overtimes, 42-34 (2OT). Virginia Tech running back Marcellous Hawkins ran for 167 yards. As a team, Cal only rushed for 39 yards.

Lastly on Friday night, in Reno, Boise State downed Nevada, 24-3. Nevada had 5 turnovers – 2 fumbles and 3 interceptions. Boise State improved to 6-2

Group of Five teams had some emotional high and low games on Saturday. Early in the fourth quarter, South Florida led Memphis 31-17. The Tigers scored 17 unanswered points to rally and beat South Florida, 34-31. Memphis’ final and game-winning touchdown came with 1:07 remaining.

Kent State trailed Bowling Green, 21-3, with less than 7 minutes to go in the third quarter. The Golden Flashes scored 21 unanswered points to beat Bowling Green, 24-21. Kent State’s final and game winning touchdown came with 3:15 remaining in the game.

In Houston, Texas, the lead in the UConn-Rice game changed hands four times. At the end of regulation, the score was tied 24-24. In the first overtime, both teams scored – 31-31. In the second overtime, UConn kicked a field goal, but Rice scored a touchdown. Rice beat UConn, 37-34 (2OT).

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, the lead in the Temple-Tulsa game changed hands five times. At the end of regulation, the score was tied 31-31. In overtime, Temple scored and went up 38-31. Tulsa scored and went for two. The two-point conversion attempt failed. Temple beat Tulsa, 38-37 (OT)

The ups and downs were incredible.

The Top-5 teams in this week’s AP Poll: 1. Ohio State (7-0), 2. Indiana (8-0), 3. Texas A&M (8-0), 4. Alabama (7-1), and 5. Georgia (6-1). Memphis (7-1) is the highest -ranked Group of Five team. The Tigers are 25th.

LSU fired Brian Kelly yesterday evening. During three-plus seasons in Baton Rouge, Kelly had a 34-14 record. His buyout is around $54 million. There are now 12 schools looking for a new coach – 8 Power Four schools and 4 Group of Five schools.

So Friday was the final day of activities at our Navy reunion in Franklin, Tennessee. Late that morning, we had a delightful tour of the Leiper’s Fork Distillery, makers of Tennessee whiskey and bourbon. The distillery was founded in 1801. There is nothing better than a sampling of whiskey and bourbon on a cool morning in Tennessee.

Following the distillery tour, we had lunch at Fox & Locke in Leipers Fork, Tennessee. Leipers Fork is a quaint and charming little village. After lunch, we returned to our hotel for a mid-afternoon break. Late in the afternoon and early into the evening we paid a visit to the Arrington Vineyards in Arrington, Tennessee. Nothing like starting your day on whiskey and ending it on wine.

Saturday, we said our farewells, and everyone headed back to their homes in such states as Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Next year, in late October, we will gather again, this time in Albuquerque/Santa Fe, New Mexico, for another reunion.

Film, stage and television actress June Lockhart died on October 23. Lockhart is best-known for two television series – “Lassie” and “Lost in Space.” She played the mother roles on both shows. Lockhart was also on the CBS television sitcom “Petticoat Junction.” A native of New York City, June Kathleen Lockhart was 100.

GAME OF THE WEEK: Boomer later – Ole Miss 34, Oklahoma 26 (Touchdown Tom said: Oklahoma 27, Ole Miss 24). The game was tied twice – 3-3 in the first quarter and 10-10 in the second quarter. Oklahoma’s only lead in the game was 26-25 late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter. OU failed to score in the fourth quarter. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss passed for 315 yards and one touchdown. Chambliss also ran for 53 yards. Ole Miss had an 11-minute edge in time of possession. Oklahoma’s defense was a disappointment. Attendance in Norman: 83,468

RUNNER-UP: These Tigers were kittens – Texas A&M 49, LSU 25 (Touchdown Tom said: Texas A&M 27, LSU 24). LSU actually led 18-14 at halftime. But the Tigers never scored in the second half until 59 seconds remained in the game. The Aggies scored 35 unanswered points in the second half. A&M quarterback Marcel Reed passed for 202 yards and 2 touchdowns. Reed also ran for 108 yards and two more touchdowns. But Reed threw two interceptions. LSU only rushed for 60 yards. CFW Week 9 Forecast - Having fun in Tennessee

CFW Week 9 Forecast – Having fun in Tennessee

The spotlight is on the SEC

Greetings college football fans from the Marriott Cool Springs in Franklin, Tennessee. Our Navy reunion group is alive and well. We spent Tuesday and Wednesday south of Nashville, taking in the sights and sounds of Brentwood and Franklin, Tennessee, including a barbecue dinner at the home of our host and dinner last night at The Sportsman Grill. Today, it’s downtown Nashville with all it has to offer. Tomorrow it’s a winery tour and a farewell dinner. Saturday, we travel home.

And speaking of Saturday, we have another big lineup of games, especially in the SEC. The SEC has four of the Top 10 games, three of which are the Top 3 games of the week. Those three games begin with Ole Miss (6-1) at Oklahoma (6-1). Is Lane Kiffin coaching his last season at Ole Miss? Some say he might be the Florida coach next season. Oklahoma’s Brent Venables isn’t going anywhere. Trinidad Chambliss vs. John Mateer. Hold onto your hats.

Then we have Texas A&M (7-0) at LSU (5-2). Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed has been playing awfully good. Not so much for LSU quarterback Garrett NussmeierBrian Kelly can’t afford to lose this one. The SEC excitement continues in Nashville – Missouri (6-1) at Vanderbilt (6-1). Vandy is the real thing. LSU found that out last week. But Missouri is awfully good too.

For a lighter touch in the SEC, but still a potentially good game is Texas (5-2) at Mississippi State (4-3). When Miss State loses, the Bulldogs lose close. And with Texas, you just never know which Longhorn team will show up.

The Big Ten comes in with three excellent encounters. For starters, we have Illinois (5-2) at Washington (5-2)Luke Altmeyer vs. Demond Williams. I think this is one of those the home team will win games. The Huskies are home. Next in the Big Ten is Minnesota (5-2) at Iowa (5-2). There may not be a lot of scoring in this one. But rest assured, it should be close. Wrapping up the Big Ten is Northwestern (5-2) at Nebraska (5-2). Gee, all these 5-2 teams in the Big Ten playing each other. Can Northwestern keep its 4-game winning streak going?

The Big 12 has a couple of dandies. How about BYU (7-0) at Iowa State (5-2). The Cougars can’t take the Cyclones for granted. There could be an upset brewing. Then we have Houston (6-1) at Arizona State (5-2)Conner Weighman is getting better and better. You never know what Arizona State is going to do, but it could be bad for Houston.

And last, but not least, we have an excellent game in the American Conference – South Florida (6-1) at Memphis (6-1). One of these two teams could be in the CFP. But it won’t be the loser.

There are three more games I am anxious and curious to see how they play out. They are Baylor (4-3) at Cincinnati (6-1). Baylor is capable of spoiling Cincinnati’s good season. Two good quarterbacks – Sawyer Robertson and Brendan SorsbyUCLA (3-4) at Indiana (7-0). Can the Bruins keep their magic going? They are on a 3-game winning streak. But Indiana is on a 7-game winning streak. SMU (5-2) at Wake Forest (4-2). SMU is the better team, but the Mustangs had a tough one against Clemson last week. Wake Forest is not only at home, but also the Demon Deacons have been getting better and better.

College Football Week 9 got off to an early start. Tuesday night, Kennesaw State downed FIU, 45-26. The teams combined for 1,001 total yards. FIU dominated the stats, including a nine-minute edge in time of possession. But the Panthers lost the game. FIU running back Kejon Owens ran for 151 yards and one touchdown.

Also Tuesday night, Western Kentucky edged Louisiana Tech in overtime, 28-27 (OT). In a losing effort, Louisiana Tech quarterback Blake Baker was 31-45-1, passing for 340 yards and a touchdown.

Last night, Delaware edged Middle Tennessee, 31-28. Delaware quarterback Nick Minicucci passed for 276 yards and four touchdowns. In the second game Wednesday night, Missouri State beat New Mexico State, 24-17 (OT). The game was tied 17-17 at the end of regulation. New Mexico State quarterback Logan Fife threw four interceptions. There were seven turnovers in the game – three by Missouri State and four by New Mexico State.

ESPN’s College GameDay will be in Nashville, Tennessee, for the Missouri-Vanderbilt game. FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff will be in Bloomington, Indiana, or the UCLA-Indiana game. The SEC Network’s SEC Nation will be in Norman, Oklahoma, for the Ole Miss-Oklahoma game. The ACC Network’s ACC Huddle will be in Miami, Florida, for the Stanford-Miami game. Enjoy the shows.

The Top-5 teams in this week’s FCS Coaches Poll are 1. North Dakota State (7-0), 2. South Dakota State (7-0), 3. Tarleton State (8-0), 4. Montana (7-0) and 5. Montana State (5-2). Harvard (5-0) is 17th.

Touchdown Tom’s Predictions for

Week Nine’s 10 Biggest and Most Intriguing Games….and then some

GAME OF THE WEEK: 1. #8 Ole Miss (6-1) at #13 Oklahoma (6-1) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ABC – Ole Miss suffered its first loss last week. The Magnolias will be out to turn that around this week. In order to do that, Ole Miss will have to penetrate the Oklahoma defense. OU is holding opponents to 9 points a game. Ole Miss is a passing team led by quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. He has passed for 1,549 yards. And Ole Miss is averaging 37 points a game. But the Ole Miss defense is weak, giving up 22 points a game. OU quarterback John Mateer can take advantage of that. Mateer has passed for 1,567 yards. OU doesn’t have much of a running game. The Sooners uproot the Magnolias – Oklahoma 27, Ole Miss 24.

RUNNER-UP: 2. #3 Texas A&M (7-0) at #20 LSU (5-2) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, ABC – It’s never easy to win on a Saturday night in Baton Rouge. But if anybody can do it, Texas A&M can. The Aggies have the ingredients to win. They are undefeated and quarterback Marcel Reed has passed for 1,770 yards. The Aggie offense is averaging 36 points a game. LSU is facing its third loss. That would be disastrous for coach Brian Kelly. Compared to Texas A&M, LSU has a weaker offense but a stronger defense. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has passed for 1,638 yards. It’s going to be a donnybrook. Aggies turn Baton blue – Texas A&M 27, LSU 24.

REST OF THE BEST: 3. #15 Missouri (6-1) at #10 Vanderbilt (6-1) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN – Both teams are coming off tough wins – Missouri over Auburn and Vandy over LSU. Both teams have power house offenses, averaging 39-40 points a game. Both are about equal on defense, giving up around 18-19 points per game. Mizzou comes at you with both running and passing. Running back Ahmad Hardy has rushed for 840 yards. Quarterback Beau Pribula has passed for 1,617 yards. Vanderbilt is all about Diego Pavia. The Commodores quarterback leads the team in passing and running – 1,569 yards passing and 438 yards rushing. The anchors aren’t down – Missouri 30, Vanderbilt 28.

4. #11 BYU (7-0) at Iowa State (5-2) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 3:30 pm ET, FOX – BYU is on a roll, and the Cougars are hoping that roll continues Saturday in Ames, Iowa. BYU has a good passing and running attack. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier has passed for 1,386 yards. He’s a pretty good runner too. Running back L.J. Martin has rushed for 774 yards. The Cougars are averaging 35 points a game. With two losses, Iowa State has been hurting. But quarterback Rocco Becht hopes to ease the Cyclones’ pain. He has passed for 1,622 yards. The Cougars will be facing a test. An upset could be in the works. But Cy isn’t up to it – BYU 28, Iowa State 23.

5. #29 Houston (6-1) at #24 Arizona State (5-2) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 8 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Houston has been a surprising team. Some think the Cougars are the weakest 6-1 team in the country. They may be but they can surprise. The Cougars are led by quarterback Conner Weighman, who has passed for 1,380 yards. Arizona State has been an up-and-down team. The Sun Devils go from losing to Utah (42-10) one week to upsetting Texas Tech (26-22) the next week. A lot has to do with how well quarterback Sam Leavitt is performing. Leavitt has passed for 1,358 yards. The Devils are up this week. The Cougars end up on the end of a fork – Arizona State 27, Houston 23.

6. #18 South Florida (6-1) at Memphis (6-1) – (AC vs. AC) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, ESPN2 – Both teams are in the running to be the Group of Five team in the CFP. Both have a good shot at it. But they must win this game. Both teams are averaging around 40 points a game. This contest has the making for a high-scoring affair. South Florida is led by quarterback Byrum Brown, who is the leading passer and runner. Brown has passed for 1,695 yards and rushed for 475 yards. Memphis suffered its first loss last week. The Tigers were upset by UAB. So the Tigers should be fired up. But they won’t be fired up enough. It will be the running of the Bulls in Memphis (passing of the Bulls too) – South Florida 30, Memphis 27.

7. #23 Illinois (5-2) at Washington (5-2) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, BTN – These are two similar teams with identical records. Both are averaging 34-35 points a game. Both defenses are giving up 22-23 points a game. Illinois is led by quarterback Luke Altmeyer. He has passed for 1,821 yards. Washington is led by quarterback Demond Williams. He has passed for 1,837 yards. Again, similar numbers. If this game were being played in Champaign, the Banned Indians would win. But it is being played in Seattle. The Huskies will win – Washington 31, Illinois 30.

8. #35 Minnesota (5-2) at Iowa (5-2) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 3:30 pm ET, Saturday, CBS – Neither of these teams are exciting. They don’t put up big passing numbers. They aren’t fancy running teams. Oftentimes, their defenses open up opportunities for their offenses. The Gophers and the Hawkeyes are two dull football teams who usually manage to get the job done. Minnesota is coming off a big win over Nebraska. Iowa is coming off a close win over Penn State. The Hawkeyes send the Gophers packing – Iowa 24, Minnesota 20.

9. Northwestern (5-2) at Nebraska (5-2) – (Big Ten vs. big Ten) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, FS1 – Northwestern has been on a roll, winning four-straight games. The Wildcats have definitely been improving each week. Quarterback Preston Stone has passed for 1,215 yards. Nebraska stumbled last week at Minnesota. They weren’t expecting that. The Huskers are led by quarterback Dylan Raiola. He has passed for 1,768 yards. Nebraska has a good running back too. Emmett Johnson has rushed for 713 yards. Both teams are similar on defense, giving up around 17 points a game. Nebraska is much better on offense, averaging 36 points a game. The winning streak is over at Northwestern. Herbie stuffs the Wildcats in a silo – Nebraska 28, Northwestern 20.

10. #22 Texas (5-2) at Mississippi State (4-3) – (SEC vs. SEC) – 4:15 pm ET, Saturday, SEC Network –  If Texas plays as badly as the Longhorns did last week against Kentucky then the Horns will lose to Miss State. Texas was lucky to beat Kentucky. Arch Manning needs to step up his game this week. He completed less than 50% of his passes last week. The Texas offense couldn’t do anything right. The Texas defense was okay. The Longhorns are holding opponents to 11 points per game. But the Longhorns offense is only averaging 27 points per game. Miss State quarterback Blake Shapen is having a great season. The Bulldogs are averaging 32 points per game on offense. Miss State began the season at 4-0. Now the Bulldogs have lost their last three games. Miss State could give Texas a tough time. But it will be Horns up in Starkville – Texas 24, Mississippi State 19.

YE OLDE STOMPING GROUNDS:

#34 TCU (5-2) at West Virginia (2-5) – (Big 12 vs. Big 12) – 6 pm ET, Saturday, ESPN+ – Both teams are giving up a lot of points on defense. But on offense, TCU is averaging 36 points per game, while WVU is only averaging 21 points a game. The Mountaineers are 0-4 in Big 12 play and none of the losses have been close. Meanwhile, TCU has a quarterback who has passed for 2,124 yards – Josh Hoover. Hoover could have a heyday against WVU. It will be a sad homecoming in Morgantown – TCU 33, West Virginia 23.

Rutgers (3-4) at Purdue (2-5) – (Big Ten vs. Big Ten) – 12 noon ET, Saturday, BTN – One of the losing streaks has to be broken Saturday. After beginning the season at 3-0, Rutgers is 0-4 in its last four games. Purdue is riding a 5-game losing streak. Neither team has won a game in Big Ten play. Rutgers is giving up as many points as the Knights average on offense – 32. Purdue is in worse shape. Surprisingly, both have decent quarterbacks, especially Rutgers. Knights quarterback Allan Kaliakmanus has passed for 1,864 yards. Purdue  quarterback Ryan Browne has passed for 1,572 yards. The Boilers fall to 0-5 in Big Ten play – Rutgers 30, Purdue 27.
