CFW Week 8 Results - Are Sam Pittman and Shane Beamer in trouble?

CFW Week 8 Results – Are Sam Pittman and Shane Beamer in trouble?

Move over Penn State-Ohio State,

Utah-USC stole your thunder

And Virginia upset North Carolina.

Yeah, the Penn State-Ohio State game didn’t live up to its hype. The game was a bore. It was dull. Up until 9 minutes to go in the game, the two teams had only scored a total of 16 points. Ohio State led 10-6. Nine of the 16 points were field goals. Penn State had no touchdowns.

In a 5-minute span in the 4th quarter, Ohio State scored 10 unanswered points. With 4:07 to go in the game, the Buckeyes led, 20-6. The Nittany Lions managed to score a touchdown with 0:29 on the clock. Ohio State beat Penn State, 20-12. It was like watching two mules fight over a turnup. They don’t play offense in the Big Ten anymore.

With opponents like West Virginia, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Northwestern and Massachusetts, Penn State was obviously overrated, coming into the Ohio State game. We all know James Franklin likes to run up the score. But he couldn’t run it up against the Buckeyes. The Nittany Lions couldn’t even score a touchdown.

A few weeks ago, Ohio State struggled to score two touchdowns against Notre Dame – the second of the two touchdowns coming with 0:01 on the clock. In its season opener, the Buckeyes only had two touchdowns in its win over Indiana.

The Minnesota-Iowa, Wisconsin-Illinois and Northwestern-Nebraska games Saturday combined for a total of 94 points. Minnesota beat Iowa, 12-10, Wisconsin beat Illinois, 25-21, and Nebraska beat Northwestern 17-9. There were four field goals in the Northwestern-Nebraska game. Five field goals in the Minnesota-Iowa game. Up until the 4th quarter, Wisconsin only had 7 points in its game against Illinois.

Minnesota-Iowa only combined for 21 first downs and 366 total yards. Iowa only had 11 yards rushing. And only one touchdown was scored in the game. There were only two touchdowns in the Northwestern-Nebraska game. Touchdowns are becoming a rarity in the Big Ten. The SEC used to be known as the “Conference of Defense.” I think the Big Ten has replaced the SEC.

There was an interesting twist near the end of the Minnesota-Iowa game. Trailing Minnesota 12-10, Iowa scored a go-ahead touchdown on a punt return, with 1:39 remaining in the game. However, the referees overruled the touchdown, saying Cooper DeJean, the Iowa punt returner, had waved his arm, indicating a fair catch signal.

Where Penn State-Ohio State failed, Utah-USC succeeded. In the game between the Utes and the Trojans, the outcome wasn’t decided until time expired. Late in the 4th quarter, less than 4 minutes to go, Utah led USC, 31-23. Then in the brief span of 1:17, USC scored 9 unanswered points – a field goal and a touchdown. The touchdown came with 1:46 on the clock. The Trojans led the Utes, 32-31. It was USC’s first and only lead in the game.

Utah had less than 2 minutes to score. It took the Utes 1:43 to move the ball to the USC 21. Out of timeouts, Utah quarterback Bryson Barnes spiked the ball with 0:03 left in the game. Then Utah kicker Cole Becker kicked a 38-yard field goal as time expired on the clock. Utah beat USC, 34-32. It was the Utes third-straight win over the Trojans, and fourth win in their last six games.

Yeah, Utah-USC stole the thunder from Penn State-Ohio State. Utah-USC was the “Game of the Week.” Penn State-Ohio State was the “Bore of the Week.” Oklahoma-Texas and Oregon-Washington lived up to their hype. Penn State-Ohio State was a flop. Offense in the Big Ten has become a flop.

There is one Big Ten team who appears to play offense – Michigan. The Wolverines beat Michigan State, 49-0. However, Michigan apparently plays good offense because the Wolverines allegedly steal the signs of their opponents.

A staff member of the Michigan football team has been accused of attending the games of Michigan’s upcoming opponents for the purpose of spying and stealing offensive and defensive signs and signals. Michigan has suspended the staff member while an investigation takes place. Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh denies any knowledge of or participation in the supposed sign stealing.

I am convinced, more than ever, that when Michigan’s season comes to a conclusion, either in a bowl game or the playoff, Jim Harbaugh will resign. I strongly suspect he will return to coaching in the NFL.

There was a big game in the SEC, and it was exciting for a while – in the first half. Tennessee and Alabama got together in Tuscaloosa. At halftime, the Vols led the Tide, 20-7. But that was all she wrote for Tennessee. Alabama scored 27 unanswered points in the second half, blanking the Vols 27-0 in the final two quarters. Alabama beat Tennessee, 34-20.

Tied 14-14 till the end of the 3rd quarter, Ole Miss scored 14 unanswered points and beat Auburn 28-21. The game wasn’t as close as the score indicates. Auburn’s third touchdown came with 0:56 left in the game.

There was a big upset in the ACC. Virginia, who lost its first five games of the season and who’s one win was over William & Mary, stunned North Carolina, 31-27. Trailing the Tar Heels, 27-24, the Cavaliers scored with 8:51 to go in the 4th quarter and held on to upset North Carolina. The Tar Heels are no longer undefeated. The victory was North Carolina’s first road win over a Top 10 team in program history. And it was the Tar Heels first win over a Top 10 team in 18 years.

There was a mild upset in the ACC. Trailing Clemson 17-7 with less than 9 minutes to go in the game, Miami scored 10 unanswered points to tie the game, 17-17 at the end of regulation. It took two overtimes, but the Canes went on to beat the Tigers, 28-20 (2OT).

There was no upset in Tallahassee. But for three quarters, it looked like there would be an upset. Until the 4th quarter, Duke never trailed Florida State. But the Noles outscored the Dookies, 21-0, in the final quarter. Florida State beat Duke, 38-20.

Sam Pittman is in more trouble at Arkansas, as is Shane Beamer at South Carolina. The Razorbacks fell to 2-6 and the Gamecocks fell to 2-5. Mississippi State downed Arkansas, 7-3. Missouri beat South Carolina, 34-12. Playing at home, Arkansas only had 200 total yards. South Carolina never scored a touchdown against Missouri. The Gamecocks sound like a Big Ten team.

The kingpins of the Big 12 – Oklahoma and Texas – almost got beat. Oklahoma entered the 4th quarter losing 23-17 to UCF. The Sooners scored 14 unanswered points and beat UCF, 31-29. With less than 6 minutes to go in the game, Texas was tied with Houston, 24-24. The Longhorns scored a touchdown with 5:37 on the clock and held on to escape Houston, 31-24.

College football Week 8 resumed Thursday night with two games – one in Tulsa, Oklahoma and the other in Huntington, West Viginia. In Tulsa, J.T. Daniels passed for 342 yards and two touchdowns, as Rice topped Tulsa, 42-10. Rice racked up 512 total yards. Tulsa had three turnovers and Rice had none.

In Huntington, James Madison remained undefeated, as the Dukes stopped Marshall, 20-9. The JMU defense held Marshall to 169 total yards: -4 yards rushing. The JMU offense racked up 405 yards.

There was only one game on Friday night. In the City of Brotherly Love, SMU crushed Temple, 55-0. The Mustangs had 36 first downs to 12 for the Owls. SMU had 563 total yards to 131 yards for Temple. The Owls only had 24 yards rushing. SMU quarterback Preston Stone passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns.

Saturday, the two Group of Five teams in the Top 25 continued to win. Air Force beat Navy, 17-6, and Tulane scored with 2:34 on the clock and beat North Texas, 35-28. Meanwhile, UNLV improved to 6-1. The Rebels kicked a field goal with 0:03 on the clock to beat Colorado State, 25-23. Colorado State had just kicked a field goal 41 seconds earlier to go up 23-22.

Toledo appears to be the best team in the MAC. The Rockets improved to 7-1, with a 21-17 win over Miami (Ohio).

Nevada is no longer winless. The Wolf Pack beat San Diego State, 6-0. Looks like a Big Ten score.

In the late, late shows Saturday night into Sunday morning, Washington downed Arizona State, 15-7, and UCLA spanked Stanford, 42-7. Washington trailed Arizona State, 7-3, at halftime. The Huskies still trailed, 7-3, as the 4th quarter began. Washington had four turnovers, including two interceptions thrown by Michael Penix. UCLA has a new quarterback – Ethan Garbers. Garbers passed for 240 yards and two touchdowns. The Bruins racked up 503 total yards.

There were two interesting and intriguing games I said to keep an eye on. First (TCU at Kansas State): Kansas State rolled up 587 yards of offense, beating TCU, 41-3…..  and Second (Georgia State at Louisiana): Georgia State scored all 20 of its points in the first half, then held on to beat Louisiana, 20-17. Georgia State quarterback Darren Grainger passed for 211 yards and two touchdowns.

At the Michigan-Michigan State game in East Lansing, Michigan State displayed an image of Adolf Hitler on the stadium videoboard during pre-game activities. Michigan State has to be the most screwed up college in the country. That school can never do anything right. Michigan State apologized and the staff member who displayed the image has been suspended.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is out indefinitely with a joint sprain in his right shoulder. Ewers suffered the injury in the Houston game Saturday.

Tis the season. Arkansas fired offensive coordinator Dan Enos yesterday. Wide receivers coach Kenny Guiton will serve as interim offensive coordinator. Enos was also the quarterbacks coach. The Razorbacks rank last in the SEC and 119th nationally in total offense with 305.9 yards a game. Their 26.5 points a game also ranks last in the SEC. Arkansas is one of six SEC schools averaging less than 30 points a game.

The score was tied 27-27 halfway through the 4th quarter. Then the Mountaineers fell apart. The teams were fairly even in the stats. Okie State running back Ollie Gordon rushed for 282 yards. Marco’s offense couldn’t find the end zone – James Madison 20, Marshall 9 (Touchdown Tom said: James Madison 31, Marshall 24). Marshall’s offense never scored a touchdown. The Herd got their nine points from a kickoff return for a touchdown, the extra point and a safety. Coming into the game, Marshall was averaging 30 point a game. Twenty-six of the game’s 29 points came in the second half. At halftime, James Madison led 3-0. JMU wasn’t really productive either on offense. Coming into the game, the Dukes were averaging 35 points a game. The two teams combined for only 127 yards rushing. It was a defensive battle, with JMU’s defense being the stronger. James Madison improved to 7-0. The Dukes are a good team but, against Marshall, they were nowhere close to being a Top 25 team. Attendance in Huntington: 22,109

The Magnolias weren’t hurt by the Freeze – Ole Miss 28, Auburn 21 (Touchdown Tom said: Ole Miss 26, Auburn 20). This was an exciting game for three quarters. Quotes of the Week

“I love it. It’s been great. The challenges are great. I enjoy coaching this team. That’s not to say they’re not taking years off my life. But I’m okay with it. It’s fun because they got a good spirit about them,” Alabama coach Nick Saban on the ups and downs of coaching this year’s team.
